NGO members assaulted in Indore over suspicion of religious conversion

The Hindu24-07-2025
Members of an NGO were thrashed by right-wing activists in Madhya Pradesh's Indore on Thursday (July 24, 2025) over allegations of religious conversion.
The alleged incident took place outside the Indore Press Club where about eight members of an NGO, Howl Group, had come to hold a press conference.
While the local police intervened to stop the assault, Indore Additional DCP, Zone 3, Ramsanehi Mishra, told The Hindu that no formal complaint was received at the local police station.
According to the NGO, it has been working in various sectors such as education and health in Shukrawasa village in neighbouring Dewas district.
In a statement, Howl Group said that a 'misinformation campaign' had been going on against it for a few months in Dewas after which the NGO had called a press conference to respond to the allegations.
Local reports from Indore, however, said a group of right-wing activists assaulted NGO founder Sourav Banerjee and other members, including women, alleging that they had been running a 'conversion racket' in the village to convert locals into Christianity.
After this, as the NGO members prepared to go to a police station, they were attacked again, with the right-wing activists also blackening the faces of some members. A purported video of the incident also surfaced on the Internet.
All false, says founder
After the alleged assault, Mr. Banerjee told reporters that the allegations were false.
'We have been working in Shukrawasa, and the suspicion around (religious) conversion is completely baseless. Let them bring even a single person whom our NGO has converted,' he said, while accusing the right-wing members of attacking his team without any evidence.
Dewas Additional SP (Rural) Harnarayn Batham said parents of some of the students working with the NGO had alleged that their children have been 'brainwashed' by the group members.
'The police are investigating the matter. We will take appropriate action after examining all facts of the matter,' he said.

Madras HC orders trial in MS Dhoni's ₹100 crore defamation case

Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to record his statement following the Madras High Court ordered a trial in a ₹ 100 crore defamation case filed by him against two prominent media channels, an IPS officer and a journalist, who dragged his name in the 2013 IPL betting scandal, reported The Hindu. The report added that Justice CV Karthikeyan has appointed an advocate commissioner who will record the evidence on behalf of Dhoni. This decision is based on the fact that MS Dhoni is a celebrity, and his presence could lead to chaos. Earlier in 2014, Dhoni filed a case and sought damages of ₹ 100 crore from the defendants – two prominent media channels, an IPS officer and a journalist. Dhoni had alleged that defamatory remarks were made against him during a Television debate on the IPL betting scandal. Senior counsel PR Raman submitted an affidavit from Dhoni seeking the start of the trial, reported The Hindu, adding it is pending for a decade. 'The above request is made with the intent to avoid any undue delay (in disposal of the suit pending in the High Court for over a decade) and to support the fair, just, and speedy adjudication of the suit. I state that I shall extend my full co-operation with the Advocate Commissioner and comply with all directions issued by this honourable court regarding the trial and the recording of evidence," The Hindu quoted the affidavit as reading. The betting scandal of 2013 in the Indian Premier League is considered to be a major blot in the T20 league's history. In the scandal, three cricketers were found guilty of having indulged in spot fixing while two franchises – Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals – were suspended for two years.

Woman Smokes On Istanbul-Cyprus Flight, Threatens To ‘Blow' It Up

The woman blatantly violated in-flight safety regulations, which strictly prohibit passengers from smoking inside the plane. A shocking incident on a flight has been going viral on the Internet, where a female passenger was seen smoking inside the cabin. The incident took place on a flight from Istanbul to Cyprus. The woman, dressed in a blue burqa and sunglasses, was seen sitting by the window when she began smoking a cigarette inside the plane. She blatantly violated in-flight safety regulations, which strictly prohibit passengers from smoking inside the plane. As seen in the clip, the woman, who was sitting alone in her row, takes a puff and pulls down her burqa to exhale the smoke discreetly into the cabin air. However, the smell gave her away. A man, sitting on the seat in front of her, quickly looked back at her to check if she was really smoking. He then removed the seat cover to prevent any mishap. The cabin crew, too, acted swiftly and snatched the cigarette from her hand. Things took a turn for the worse as the woman then took out a lighter and tried to set the cover of the seat on fire. She did not stop there. The woman then took out a piece of white cloth and tried to light that as well. But the crew acted immediately and tried to take away her lighter, which she resisted. Another crew member reached her seat with a bottle of water, pouring it over the flame to extinguish it. The video shared by The Sun on Monday, August 11, on X has garnered over 2.5 million views. People have expressed concerns over violations of such safety regulations, while a section slammed her for her actions. Meanwhile, a few other users pointed out that the incident happened years ago and isn't a recent one. Reportedly, the bizarre incident took place in 2019. According to several media reports, the original video was posted on X, where the woman on the plane going from Istanbul to Northern Cyprus threatened to 'blow up" the aircraft as it was taxiing at the Istanbul airport. She shouted, 'I am an FETO member, and I will blow up the aircraft." The woman was later detained by the authorities. She was allegedly from the Gülen organisation, which has been classified by Turkiye as a terrorist organisation under the names Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) and Parallel State Structure (PDY).
