South Korean shipbuilders' global order share rises amid US-China tension

Hans India10 hours ago
Seoul: South Korean shipbuilders saw a significant rebound in their global order share in the first half amid US sanctions targeting Chinese rivals, an industry report showed on Tuesday.
According to the report from the Export-Import Bank of Korea, South Korea secured 25.1 percent of global shipbuilding orders in terms of compensated gross tons (CGT) during the January-June period, reports Yonhap news agency.
It marks a substantial rise from 17.2 percent a year earlier, narrowing the gap with leader China from 51 percentage points to 26.7 percentage points.
Last year, South Korea's share of global annual orders stood at 15 percent, the lowest in eight years.
This year's rebound is largely attributed to recent U.S. trade measures. The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has introduced a policy to impose port entry fees on Chinese shipping companies and operators of Chinese-built vessels, effectively discouraging reliance on Chinese shipyards.
In the first half of the year, container ships accounted for 53.3 percent of South Korea's total order volume of 4.87 million CGT. Last year, South Korean shipyards secured just two midsize-to-large container ship orders.
"The shift in orders from Chinese to Korean shipbuilders amid U.S. sanctions has contributed to the increase in Korea's global market share," the report said.
Despite the improved performance, the bank stressed the need for South Korea's shipbuilding industry to use this opportunity to enhance its fundamental competitiveness for long-term resilience.
Meanwhile, South Korea ranked second in new global shipbuilding orders in June, industry data showed.
South Korean shipyards clinched orders totaling 1.05 million compensated gross tons (CGTs) for eight ships, accounting for 41 percent of the global total at 2.56 million CGTs last month, according to London-based Clarkson Research Services.
China ranked first, taking up 53 percent of the global total.
In terms of order backlog, China ranked first with 96.82 million CGTs, or 59 percent of the global total of 163.37 million CGTs as of the end of June, with South Korea trailing in second with 35.42 million CGTs, accounting for 22 percent of the total.
Clarkson's Newbuilding Price Index, a barometer of price changes in newly built ships, came to 187.11 last month, up 0.42 point from a year ago.

Three held in ₹44 lakh cyber fraud case

Three persons were arrested by the cyber crime wing of the Hyderabad police for defrauding a city-based person of over ₹44 lakh by posing as trading advisors from a fictitious firm named 'Aveshta Study Group-W'. The accused were identified as Milind Manohar Narkar, 34, a private employee from Santacruz, Mumbai; Ranak Jagadish Patel, 31, a businessman from Bhiwandi, Thane; and Salik Imtiyaz Ahmed Siddiqui, 25, a private employee from Mumbra, Thane. All three were working in tandem with a cyber fraudster operating out of Dubai. According to investigators, the trio contacted the victim in June 2025 on phone, claiming to be professional trading advisors offering high return investment opportunities. Lured by the promise of substantial profits, the victim was persuaded to transfer funds into several bank accounts controlled by the accused. When the victim later attempted to withdraw the 'profits', he was asked to first pay a 20% 'service charge' on the returns. Believing the promise that both the profits and the original investment would be returned following this payment, the victim complied. In total, he was cheated of ₹44,04,753. During the investigation, it emerged that Milind Narkar was actively assisting the Dubai-based kingpin by converting fraudulently acquired funds into cryptocurrency. He also played a key role in sourcing and operating mule accounts, and was found to be accommodating account holders at various hotels in Mumbai. His network extended across seven other States in India where he allegedly facilitated the conversion of illicit gains into digital currency. The Hyderabad police seized three mobile phones from the accused. All three are believed to be working on commission for the overseas fraudster, by providing access to and managing local bank accounts used in the scam. Following the case, the Hyderabad police issued a public advisory warning citizens to be wary of suspicious investment schemes promising unusually high returns. Authorities have noted that scammers often pose as representatives of well-known firms and use forged documents, including fake SEBI certifications, to build credibility. Such fraudsters commonly advertise via platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, and often share fake profit screenshots to gain victims' trust. Citizens have been urged to verify investment schemes thoroughly before parting with their money and to avoid making hasty financial decisions based on promises of quick returns. Victims of cyber fraud are advised to immediately dial 1930 or visit: for assistance.

Illegal sale of fireworks, illicit import of Chinese fireworks caused loss of 40% to fireworks traders, says federation

Federation of Tamil Nadu Fireworks Traders have alleged that illegally functioning online sale of fireworks and illicit import of Chinese fireworks has caused a loss of ₹800 crore to the fireworks traders of the country during 2024 Deepavali season. Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, the federation president V. Raja Chandrasekaran said that despite the Supreme Court banning taking online orders and sale of fireworks in 2018, the illegal online sale continued. 'This has been more pronounced in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Before it spreads to other States, the Government should ensure that no online sale of fireworks could be done,' he said. Besides, stealth import of Chinese goods continued, he charged. He pointed out that even recently, Chinese fireworks worth ₹35 crore were seized in Mumbai. 'The combination of online sales and Chinese imports had affected the business of traders to the extent of 40%, which is around ₹800 crore to ₹1000 crore, during Deepavali season 2024,' he said. The federation would proceed with a case of contempt of court for allowing online sale of fireworks besides initiating criminal case, he said. License for fireworks shops Mr. Chandrasekaran complained that applications submitted for permanent cracker shops in February and March 2025 were yet to be processed. 'The process should have been completed within two months,' he said. Besides, the license for permanent cracker shops is issued for five years under Explosives Act 2008. However, since the Department of Fireworks and Rescue gives no-objection certificate for only one year, the Revenue Department was giving license for only one year in many districts, he complained. Besides, he insisted that the inordinate delay in giving license for temporary cracker shops during Deepavali season was taking a huge toll on the traders. 'The applications should be invited 90 days before Deepavali and the 15-day license should be given one month ahead of Deepavali to help the traders plan their business,' he said. The federation secretary, N. Elangovan, was present.

Lenskart files IPO papers to raise Rs 2,150 crore, eyes tech and growth

Eyewear retailer Lenskart Solutions Ltd has filed preliminary documents for an initial public offering (IPO) that could raise up to ₹2,150 crore, as the company seeks to capitalise on rising demand for affordable prescription glasses and contact lenses. The offering comprises ₹2,150 crore in new shares and the sale of up to 132.3 million existing shares by current investors and company founders, according to the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) filed with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). Among the selling shareholders are co-founders Peyush Bansal, Neha Bansal, Amit Chaudhary and Sumeet Kapahi, along with investors including SoftBank's SVF II Lightbulb (Cayman) Ltd, Schroders Capital Private Equity Asia Mauritius Ltd, PI Opportunities Fund – II, Macritchie Investments Pte Ltd, Kedaara Capital Fund II LLP, and Alpha Wave Ventures LP. The company may also conduct a private placement of up to ₹430 crore before filing the final prospectus, which would reduce the size of the fresh issue. Sources said the firm is aiming for an IPO valuation of about $10 billion. According to the DRHP, Lenskart plans to use ₹272.6 crore from the net proceeds to open new CoCo (company-owned, company-operated) stores in India, ₹591.4 crore for lease, rent and licence payments, ₹213.4 crore for technology and cloud infrastructure, and ₹320 crore for brand marketing and promotion. Remaining funds will be used for inorganic acquisitions and general corporate purposes. Kotak Mahindra Capital Company Ltd, Morgan Stanley India Company Pvt Ltd, Avendus Capital Pvt Ltd, Citigroup Global Markets India Pvt Ltd, Axis Capital Ltd, and Intensive Fiscal Services Pvt Ltd are the book running lead managers to the issue. Founded in 2008, Lenskart launched its online platform in 2010 and opened its first retail store in New Delhi in 2013. The company aims to improve access to quality, affordable eyewear through a tech-enabled supply and distribution network. Globally and in India, Gurugram-based Lenskart competes with Titan Eyeplus, Specsmakers, Vision Express, Warby Parker and Italian eyewear conglomerate Luxottica Group. Lenskart currently operates India's largest eyewear retail network with a presence in metropolitan and smaller cities, as well as in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. It runs manufacturing units in Bhiwadi and Gurugram, supported by regional hubs in Singapore and the UAE. It targets a wide customer base with both premium and affordable brand offerings. Nearly 45 per cent of its India revenue comes from customers who engaged digitally within 90 days prior to purchase. India remains Lenskart's largest market in Asia. In FY25, the company recorded over 100 million app downloads and 105 million website visitors globally. It operates 2,723 stores—2,067 in India and 656 overseas. In FY25, Lenskart reported revenue from operations of ₹6,652.5 crore, up 22.5 per cent from ₹5,427.7 crore in FY24. The company reported a net profit of ₹297.34 crore, compared to a net loss of ₹10.15 crore in FY24. EBITDA, excluding other income, stood at ₹971 crore, up 44.5 per cent from ₹672 crore in the previous fiscal. Risk Factors However, the DRHP outlines several risks that could impact the company's operations, financials and growth outlook. Lenskart has incurred losses in the past and may continue to do so. Its geographic concentration is another concern, as a significant portion of revenue is derived from India. The company's brand strategy is heavily reliant on in-house labels, and its international ambitions carry regulatory and operational risks. The DRHP also flags potential funding needs, stating that Lenskart may require additional capital in future. Leadership continuity is another area of concern. The company is dependent on its promoters and senior management. The DRHP states that future success hinges on the continued involvement of Peyush Bansal and other key executives. Additionally, it notes that Sumeet Kapahi, one of the promoters and Global Head of Sourcing, has been unable to locate copies of his (Hons.) degree and marksheets from the University of Delhi. Operationally, Lenskart's private-label model exposes it to inventory and quality-related risks. Its franchise and partner store network introduces third-party vulnerabilities. On the technology front, Lenskart's geo-analytics tools help forecast revenue potential and payback periods. A 500-member technology team builds and maintains its core digital infrastructure—including websites, mobile apps, warehouse systems and AI-powered supply chain tools. The DRHP cites an estimated 1.3 billion people across India, Japan, Southeast Asia and the Middle East—representing 32 per cent of the global population—with refractive errors in FY25. In India, this share increased from 43 per cent (590 million) in FY20 to 53 per cent (777 million) in FY25, and is projected to reach 62 per cent (943 million) by FY30.
