Cherokee Co. Sheriff's Office warning residents about toll bill payment scam
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to be aware of, and wary, a new type of text message scam.
It's a scam Channel 2 Consumer Investigative Reporter Justin Gray warned about in February.
This time around, deputies are warning residents about messages saying they owe unpaid bills for driving on toll roads in Georgia.
'A new scam is making its rounds through text messages demanding payment of unpaid tolls. It may look legit and include a link to pay and an amount owed but DO NOT fall for it,' the sheriff's office said.
In an example shared by the sheriff's office, the messages related to scam read 'Your vehicle has an unpaid toll bill. To avoid excessive late fees on your bill, please settle it promptly. Thank you for your cooperation! Total amount: $6.99 Payment:'
One type of message includes a link to click as well as directions on how to use it.
Another version mentions Georgia's Peach Pass specifically, reading 'Peach Pass Final Reminder: You have an outstanding toll. Your toll account balance is outstanding. If you fail to pay by March 7, 2025. you will face penalties or legal action,' before showing a link that includes 'peachpass' in it and directions to open the link.
Neither message is legitimate.
'This is a SCAM! Toll authorities do not request payment this way. Do not click on the links. Please be careful,' the sheriff's office urged residents.

A man is dead and two others are hurt after homemade fireworks reportedly caused an explosion at a home in Trumbull County over the weekend, according to our CBS affiliate WOIO-19 TV. Justin Braun, 34, died in the explosion and a 28-year-old and 4-year-old were hospitalized with critical injuries, WOIO-19 reported. The fire department said a woman took herself to an area with injuries related to the explosion. The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office told WOIO-19 that the occupants made homemade fireworks inside, which possibly caused the explosion. WOIO-19 obtained the following statement from the State Fire Marshal Office: The Ohio State Fire Marshal urges everyone to not try to make homemade fireworks or tamper with fireworks they have purchased. This incident is a tragic reminder of how dangerous this can be. The chemical mixtures and materials used in fireworks are extremely volatile and dangerous. When it comes to manufacturing fireworks, its best to leave it to the professionals. Driver pulls out knife on couple driving too slow in Kennesaw neighborhood, police say
Ten miles below the speed limit: that is what one driver told Kennesaw police drove him to pull a knife during a road rage incident in the Legacy Park community. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'He said the reason why he was agitated was because the driver was going 25 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone,' explained Ofc. David Buchanan about why 55-year-old Giancarlo Russo is accused of pulling a knife on his neighbors during a road rage incident. It happened in Kennesaw in the Legacy Park neighborhood. A husband and wife got to a stop sign to find the driver, Russo, behind them was outraged, when he blocked their car with his own. 'The offender pulled in front of them and blocked them, got out of his car, he was holding a knife and was threatening towards them,' Buchanan told Channel 2's Candace McCowan. 'He was trying to get the male driver out of the vehicle to instigate some type of altercation or fight. The victim stayed in the car, got away safely, and called us.' St. Augustine business owner indicted on charges of having child sexual abuse material
A St. Augustine business owner has been federally indicted on charges that he paid money to receive child sex abuse images online. Action News Jax was outside Dymeng Technology Solutions on Paseo Reyes Drive on May 8 when the business was raided. We confronted the owner, Jack Leach, to find out why federal investigators were there. Leach, 43, faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
