No change in outsourcing of operation and maintenance of new bus terminal, says Tiruchi Mayor

The Hindu29-04-2025

Mayor M. Anbazhagan on Tuesday said that there was no change in the decision of the Tiruchi Corporation to outsource the operation and maintenance of the integrated bus terminus (IBT) built at an estimate of ₹492 crore at Panjapur on the Tiruchi-Madurai highway.
Responding to demands of a few councillors, who objected to the decision of the Corporation at its council meeting, Mr. Anbazhagan said the swanky new bus terminal, which was built by providing modern amenities, was one of the largest bus stands in the country. It required a dedicated team to maintain it. Hence, it had been decided to involve private firms to take care of operation and maintenance of the new bus terminal.
K. Suresh (CPI), a councillor representing Ward No. 23, who raised the issue, said the Corporation had built a number of shops and restaurants in the bus terminal. It should directly control the revenue-generating civic infrastructure. It would fetch more revenue to the civic body. Similarly, the Corporation should take care of maintenance of the bus terminal by employing its own civic workers. It would open up avenues for employing new workers as well.
Mr. Anbazhagan said the arrangement was on a pilot basis. The idea was to maintain the bus terminal neat and clean. Accountability clause on contractor would ensure the neatness of all facilities and passenger amenities. There was no need for any apprehension on it.
Joining the debate, S. Suresh (CPI-M) said that privatisation was not a good idea. It should not be promoted in any manner.
Traders apprehensive
Ambikapathy (AIADMK), representing Ward No. 65, said that the traders of Gandhi Market had raised apprehension on moving to the new Integrated Vegetable Market, which was to be built at Panjapur. They apprehended that their livelihood would be affected if they were forced to move to the new market.
Mr. Anbazhagan said there was no need for any apprehension as Minister for Municipal Administration K. N. Nehru had made it clear that the traders of the Gandhi Market would not be shifted.
Mr. Anbikapathy said that the Tiruchi Corporation's move to increase the rent of shops in Gandhi Market would hit the traders. There was a move to fix rent for the space used by the traders in front of their shops as well. It should be withdrawn.
Earlier, the Mayor informed the Council that the State government had issued an order naming the Integrated Bus Terminal and the Truck Terminal, which were to be thrown open to the public by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on May 9 after former Chief Ministers M. Karunanidhi and C.N. Annadurai respectively.

Global trends, inflation data to drive market sentiment this week: Analysts

Equity investors would track global market trends, inflation data and trading activity of foreign investors for further cues this week, analysts said. Moreover, progress of monsoon and developments related to trade talks would also be monitored by investors, experts noted. "Going forward, market participants will focus on key macroeconomic data for further cues. High-frequency indicators such as CPI inflation will be closely tracked to gauge demand trends and the central bank's next steps. Additionally, the progress of monsoon and sowing patterns will be monitored due to their implications for rural consumption," Ajit Mishra -- SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd -- said. On the global front, developments in trade negotiations and movements in US bond yields will continue to influence investor sentiment, he added. Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty surged on Friday, driven by a rally in rate-sensitive sectors following the Reserve Bank's jumbo rate cut of 50 basis points. The 30-share BSE Sensex ended the day higher by 746.95 points, or 0.92 per cent, to settle at 82,188.99. The 50-share NSE Nifty reclaimed the 25,000-level and climbed 252.15 points, or 1.02 per cent, to settle at 25,003.05. "We expect Indian markets to witness a gradual up-move, supported by positive sentiment following higher-than-anticipated rate cut by the RBI and optimism surrounding a potential US-India trade agreement with officials from both sides meeting in New Delhi to finalise the first phase of the proposed deal," Siddhartha Khemka, Head, Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, said. "Meanwhile, global headwinds, including unexpected shifts in US tariffs and ongoing geopolitical tensions, may induce volatility," he said. Last week, the BSE benchmark surged 737.98 points, or 0.90 per cent, and the Nifty jumped 252.35 points, or 1 per cent. Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Ltd, said, the aggressive RBI rate cut, backed by cooling inflation and a steady GDP outlook, is likely to support investor confidence amidst the ongoing global uncertainties.

FIIs turn sellers again in June, but markets ignore the Rs 3,565 cr exit

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs), after purchasing equities worth Rs 19,860 crore in May, have turned net sellers in early June. According to exchange data, FIIs sold shares worth Rs 3,565 crore in the cash market through June 6. This trend highlights their cautious stance amid global cues and domestic uncertainties. ADVERTISEMENT In sharp contrast—and unsurprisingly—domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have stepped up their buying, turning into sustained buyers on every trading day so far in June. Their cumulative purchases have reached Rs 25,510 crore, effectively offsetting the selling pressure from FIIs. This strong DII support is helping keep the markets stable despite global headwinds. FIIs have also been consistently selling in the debt market due to the narrow differential between US and Indian bond yields, analysts said. Higher yields in the US have made Indian debt less attractive, contributing to continued outflows. Meanwhile, market sentiment received a major boost from the Reserve Bank's unexpected monetary policy action. The central bank implemented a 50 basis point repo rate cut along with a 100 basis point reduction in the cash reserve ratio (CRR). VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, remarked, 'With growth prospects in the US and China looking bleak, India stands out as a resilient economy that can deliver over 6% growth in FY26. The only concern is the high valuations, which leave little room for the rally to continue.' Markets consolidated for the third consecutive week but managed to close higher, thanks to the RBI's pro-growth stance. ADVERTISEMENT Looking ahead, investors are expected to monitor key macroeconomic data, particularly CPI inflation, and the progress of the monsoon—both of which could influence rural consumption trends."Technical charts suggest that the Nifty is poised for a breakout above 25,200, which could open the door to further gains," said Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking. However, support remains strong around 24,400–24,600. ADVERTISEMENT With DII inflows overshadowing FII selling and the RBI signaling confidence in growth, market experts suggest a "buy on dips" approach—while staying cautious in sectors exposed to global headwinds.
