PFF: Bills RB room ranked as top-10 unit in the NFL

USA Today6 hours ago

The Buffalo Bills have plenty of attention on their running back room during the 2025 offseason but that's not going to change that way Pro Football Focus looks at the group.
Pro Bowl rusher James Cook is looking for a new contract from the Bills and has been vocal about it. Cook has not gotten that, but he showed up in Buffalo for minicamp in June which is a good sign for the 2025 season.
While Cook is the clear-cut No. 1 as a Pro Bowler in 2023 and 2024, he is not the only reason PFF appreciates the Bills' backfield.
PFF places Buffalo's running back room at the eighth-best in the NFL heading into the 2025 season because of the full group from top-to-bottom. The football analytics outlet appreciating the diversity the Bills have rushing the ball like the differences between the quick and shifty James Cook and bruising rusher Ray Davis.
PFF's breakdown on the Bills running back room can be found below:
Buffalo has put together a solid group of running backs who fill a variety of roles. The workhorse is James Cook, who earned an outstanding 88.6 PFF rushing grade last season while leading the league in rushing touchdowns.
Rookie Ray Davis got 120 carries of his own and earned a solid 73.1 PFF rushing grade while breaking 30 tackles. Ty Johnson serves as a reliable pass catcher, ranking 10th among qualifiers in PFF receiving grade in 2024.

Brandon Aiyuk Sends Clear Message to 49ers Amid Trade Rumors

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. In back-to-back offseasons, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly tried to unload star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on another team. Last year, San Francisco nearly dealt the All-Pro wideout to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the deal was nixed at the last minute as Aiyuk agreed to sign a contract extension with the 49ers while general manager John Lynch was on the phone trying to close a deal with Steelers GM Omar Khan, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer. Aiyuk ultimately signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension to stay in San Francisco — a deal that started to look bad for the team once the 27-year-old tore his ACL just seven games into last season. Even after sending Pro Bowl receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders earlier in the offseason, the 49ers were also reportedly still trying to unload Aiyuk's contract as well. ESPN reported that San Francisco was trying feverishly to find a taker for the Arizona State alum before his $22.85 million bonus kicked in on April 1. Paying out such a large chunk of cash likely ensures that Aiyuk will be a 49er in 2025. Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers gestures during the game against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium on September 15, 2024 in Minneapolis, Aiyuk has had a relatively quiet offseason this year compared to last, he did take to YouTube to make it known how he felt about his name being on the trade block shortly after the season ended, while also sending a subtle message to the 49ers about trying to dump him again. "They was talking bout trading me while I was off percocets /muscle relaxers and peeing in a cup by my bed! Couldn't walk for 10 weeks ain't nobody trading for me 🤣💀," Aiyuk wrote on YouTube. Aiyuk is working back from one of the more devastating injuries of his career after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee back in October, which likely made the list of suitors for him back in March a short one. The Steelers, who traded for former Seattle Seahawks star DK Metcalf and sent George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in two bold offseason deals, were rumored to be interested in Aiyuk again, and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio even hinted the 49ers seemed willing to send him to Pittsburgh. "The 49ers would love to unload Brandon Aiyuk's contract on the Steelers," Florio said during an interview with 93.7 The Fan. After missing all of training camp last season while holding out for a new deal, Aiyuk looked rusty to start the season. The former 1,000-yard receiver had just one 100-yard outing last year, and he had five or more receptions just twice while scoring zero touchdowns. He finished the season with 25 catches and 374 yards in seven games. Given the severity of his injury, there's a chance Aiyuk will be just as rusty when he returns in 2025. Jayden Daniels 'excited' for Deebo Samuel to juice up his stats

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels had one of the greatest rookie seasons by a quarterback in recent memory, and his team's addition of wideout Deebo Samuel might make his 2025 stats look even better. During an appearance as a speaker at Fanatics Fest over the weekend, Daniels expressed his excitement to join forces with the speedy receiver, whom the Commanders traded for in March. If things work out as the second-year quarterback hopes, he will get the double benefit of more passing yards for less effort. "I'm excited to throw him a little screen and hopefully on the stat sheet it says a touchdown for 80 yards and I didn't have to do any of the work," Daniels joked in a video posted by The Sports Place. There is some truth in Daniels' joke. In 2024, Samuel averaged 8.3 yards after catch per reception – the third-highest average of any wide receiver in the NFL. Only Denver Broncos wideout Marvin Mims and the Detroit Lions' Jameson Williams were better after the catch, according to Pro Football Reference. That's a skill set the Commanders will be happy to have in their passing offense to complement that of lead receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin earned his second career Pro Bowl nod in 2024 as he continued to find success over the middle and in deep parts of the field. According to Pro Football Focus, his average depth of target was 13.9 yards – 14th-highest in the NFL – but his yards after catch average was 3.6 – 59th in the league. Samuel, meanwhile, had an average depth of target of 6.9 yards per PFF (89th) but averaged his aforementioned 8.3 yards after catch per reception to make up for it. He joins the Commanders with hope on both sides that a change of scenery will help enable him to return to his 2021 levels of production, when he caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards – leading the league with his 18.2 yards per reception. In the three years since, Samuel has not surpassed 900 receiving yards. Samuel finished the 2024 season with 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns in the air. He also had 42 carries for 136 rushing yards and an additional touchdown on the ground.
