Jayden Daniels 'excited' for Deebo Samuel to juice up his stats
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels had one of the greatest rookie seasons by a quarterback in recent memory, and his team's addition of wideout Deebo Samuel might make his 2025 stats look even better.
During an appearance as a speaker at Fanatics Fest over the weekend, Daniels expressed his excitement to join forces with the speedy receiver, whom the Commanders traded for in March. If things work out as the second-year quarterback hopes, he will get the double benefit of more passing yards for less effort.
"I'm excited to throw him a little screen and hopefully on the stat sheet it says a touchdown for 80 yards and I didn't have to do any of the work," Daniels joked in a video posted by The Sports Place.
There is some truth in Daniels' joke.
In 2024, Samuel averaged 8.3 yards after catch per reception – the third-highest average of any wide receiver in the NFL. Only Denver Broncos wideout Marvin Mims and the Detroit Lions' Jameson Williams were better after the catch, according to Pro Football Reference.
That's a skill set the Commanders will be happy to have in their passing offense to complement that of lead receiver Terry McLaurin.
McLaurin earned his second career Pro Bowl nod in 2024 as he continued to find success over the middle and in deep parts of the field. According to Pro Football Focus, his average depth of target was 13.9 yards – 14th-highest in the NFL – but his yards after catch average was 3.6 – 59th in the league.
Samuel, meanwhile, had an average depth of target of 6.9 yards per PFF (89th) but averaged his aforementioned 8.3 yards after catch per reception to make up for it.
He joins the Commanders with hope on both sides that a change of scenery will help enable him to return to his 2021 levels of production, when he caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards – leading the league with his 18.2 yards per reception. In the three years since, Samuel has not surpassed 900 receiving yards.
Samuel finished the 2024 season with 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns in the air. He also had 42 carries for 136 rushing yards and an additional touchdown on the ground.

He's no gimmick, either — this kid can ball. But the question remains, how will he be used? There really aren't any solid comps, and I know for a fact it's the biggest question mark for all the major NFL projection systems. LAGHEZZA'S LEAN: You'd think in this division, running to smash the over would be a no-brainer. However, the schedule's extremely tough outside the AFC South, and the Jags need to double their year-over-year win total to cash. They'll face both the NFC and AFC West, which simply put, isn't great on paper. Advertisement Expect JAX to be listed underdogs in essentially every tilt, with lots of travel on the docket, including "hosting" a game vs the Chargers in London. I've always rooted for Trevor Lawrence but just don't see enough improvements on defense to instill the confidence needed for eight wins. If anything, the Jags should make a fun team total bet every week if the offense starts to hum under Coen without improving on the other side of the ball. No action for me yet, but I'm leaning pretty hard toward JAGUARS UNDER 7.5 WINS (-110) on Fanduel. Josh Allen: MVP is an honor, but I didn't win a Super Bowl ring and that is the only goal
Bills quarterback Josh Allen was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, but he still hasn't achieved the one thing he really wants in his career. Allen says that until he has a Super Bowl ring, his résumé has a hole in it. 'You know, it is such a great honor, and I do appreciate being honored for my work,' Allen told Liam McKeone of 'But at the same time, I still didn't win a Super Bowl. Didn't win a ring, and that is the only goal. It's the only focus that I've ever had going into this league.' Allen said to the extent that the MVP matters to him, it's mostly because a quarterback isn't going to get the MVP award unless his team had a good regular season. 'The one positive, I will say, about winning an MVP means that your team is in a good position,' Allen said. 'You're making the playoffs, you're playing well and you're doing whatever you can to help your team win football games. But at the end of the day, you got to make the playoffs and then you got to win three, maybe four games. And that's what we need to do. And we're going to continue to work as hard as we can and myself included. What can we do to find a way over that hump? So that's the only goal going forward.' The Bills have had a lot of regular-season success with Allen and have made the playoffs six years in a row. Report: Steelers expected to sign veteran LS Tucker Addington
The Steelers are expected to sign former Texans long snapper Tucker Addington — who was just released by Houston a few days ago — as reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC. Since entering the NFL in 2022, Addington has played four games with the Patriots, three with the Commanders, and three with the Dolphins — potentially bringing just enough experience to compete with current Steelers LS Christian Kuntz for a roster spot. Since signing with the Steelers in 2021, Kuntz has served as the team's primary long snapper in every game Pittsburgh has played.
