AUB Announces Plans for School of Computing and Data Sciences
The American University of Beirut (AUB) held a project launch event on May 29, 2025, to announce the forthcoming establishment of a School of Computing and Data Sciences (SCDS) at the university. The event was held as part of the annual meetings of the AUB Board of Trustees, in the presence of upper administration, faculty and researchers, partners, distinguished guests, and media representatives. 'The School of Computing and Data Sciences will be our answer—not a reaction, but a deliberate next step in a shared vision that emphasizes the need to remain agile and forward-thinking as we navigate the rapidly changing global landscape. A keystone of the VITAL 2030 strategic plan,' said AUB President Dr. Fadlo Khuri. 'It is envisioned to welcome and nurture students who will learn to ask deep and impactful questions, to model the world with courage and humility, and to imagine and shape futures where technology is not an escape from complexity, but a deep engagement with it.' The establishment of a School of Computing and Data Sciences was approved through a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees in June 2024, and will offer bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees. The school aspires to further advance AUB's excellence in teaching and learning, research and innovation, medical care, and institutional effectiveness, thereby leveraging its legacy to transform societies through knowledge and service, and uphold its mission as the premier higher education institution in the region and beyond. The school will embrace a systems view of artificial intelligence, and the role of data of all scales and across diverse disciplines—from health and medical sciences to Arabic language and the environment. It shall house a world-class interdisciplinary faculty body covering the full spectrum of expertise from theory and fundamentals to tools and applications, aiming to cultivate a generation of wise leaders, thinkers, designers, and builders. As someone who has worked in Silicon Valley for 43 years, AUB Board of Trustees Chair Abdo Kadifa spoke about how artificial intelligence is going to transform the world, and said: 'We felt at AUB that we have to drive and innovate and be the leader in this field. Not just not in this region, but on a global level. We intend to amass the expertise, the capabilities, the computing talent, as well as researchers in a variety of fields to deliver a new way for artificial intelligence to prosper, and to deliver prosperity for us here in the region.' Chair Kadifa also noted that the university and its board are fully committed to finding the resources 'to make this work,' including a target of raising $100 million, which highlights their belief in the strategic importance of establishing this new school. Expected to launch in September 2026, the School of Computing and Data Sciences will be part observatory, part educational and experiential, and part computational powerhouse with machines trained on data streams—from the subatomic to the astronomical—and capable of analyzing phenomena as complex as epidemics over networked societies. 'Lebanon and the region are in dire need of solutions that cut across disciplines and sectors,' said Khuri. 'Whether it's mitigating water scarcity, addressing health disparities, or understanding the shifting dynamics of migration and labor, we need the kind of insight that computing and data science can provide … May this school become a new observatory for our age. May it turn its lens to the complex patterns of society, the data hidden in plain sight, and the frontiers of knowledge that still lie ahead.' The event included a presentation by AUB Provost Dr. Zaher Dawy and Dr. Jihad Touma, the school's founding director, as well as a team of AUB researchers who presented on a pioneering experiment to develop 'large percussion models.' A reception followed to conclude the project launching event.

ISESCO enhances knowledge partnerships for sustainable development
More knowledge-based world The Office is keen to implement a set of qualitative programmes and initiatives that contribute to translating ISESCO's vision for a more knowledge-based world. This is achieved by enhancing communication with academic and research institutions, as well as cultural and development institutions within and outside the United Arab Emirates, with a view to cooperation among the countries of the Islamic world and building sustainable bridges of cultural and scientific integration. This builds on the successful projects implemented in previous periods that have contributed to supporting the education system, in addition to actively contributing to organizing academic events and meetings that enhance opportunities for intellectual convergence and open broader avenues for cooperation between relevant institutions. Supporting the knowledge economy In this context, the ISESCO Regional Office in Sharjah is working to expand the scope of its joint programmes to include the development of initiatives in the fields of science, technology, and artificial intelligence. This is in line with global trends in supporting the knowledge economy and enhancing the position of scientific institutions in the Islamic world as a soft power contributing to building the future. Nurturing entrepreneurial environment Focusing on continuing to launch innovative educational and cultural projects aimed at supporting local skills and competencies and nurturing the entrepreneurial environment is also being emphasised. These projects also contribute to the development of language and culture and the strengthening of cultural identity in light of the challenges of accelerating globalisation. Organising scientific events The Office also continues to develop its plan and partnerships to organise scientific conferences and forums that bring together academic elites, experts, and researchers from various Member States. These events provide effective platforms for dialogue and cooperation and foster a spirit of scientific solidarity among Islamic societies, in line with the Emirate of Sharjah's vision as a regional and international hub for knowledge, culture, and innovation. His Excellency Salem Omar Salem, Director of the ISESCO Regional Office in Sharjah, emphasised that the Office is keen to expand partnerships and cooperation with national, regional, and international institutions to support education and scientific research, empower youth, and enhance the Islamic world's contribution to building a knowledge society. Achieving the sustainable development goals Salem explained that the focus in the next phase will be on continuing to support projects that have positive impacts on societies and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through pioneering initiatives in the fields of innovation, training, and cultural and educational empowerment, particularly in various fields.

Holy Quran Academy signs scientific and research partnership with University of Sharjah
The Holy Quran Academy in Sharjah has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Sharjah. The agreement aims to develop and advance academic studies, scientific research, and joint research programs in Quranic studies, the sciences of interpretation, and the various modes of Quranic recitation. The scientific partnership signing ceremony was held at the Holy Quran Academy, with Dr. Eng. Khalifa Musabah Al-Tunaiji, Chairman of the Academy, signing on its behalf. Representing the University of Sharjah was Professor Dr. Esameldin Agmy, the University's Chancellor. The event was attended by Dr. Abdullah Khalaf Al-Hosani, Secretary-General of the Academy; Professor Dr. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies; as well as several academic and research leaders and department heads from both institutions. He added: 'This partnership will play an active role in advancing Quranic studies and research, while also strengthening the Academy's position as a global scholarly center for Quranic sciences and research.' He emphasized that the collaboration supports joint research and serves as a strong catalyst for launching unique scientific initiatives in the service of the Holy Quran and its sciences. He also stressed the importance of forming a dedicated working team to oversee educational initiatives and further develop the strategic partnership, with the aim of enhancing Sharjah's scientific and knowledge-driven role. The initiative also seeks to promote the global dissemination of Islamic heritage, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in advancing scientific research. Dr. Al-Tunaiji affirmed that distinguished scholarly work and its documentation represent a valuable legacy for communities and future generations. Professor Dr. Esameldin Agmy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, expressed his deep pride in signing the cooperation agreement with the Holy Quran Academy. He was introduced to its efforts in promoting the values of tolerance and the beauty of Islam through its three main pillars: — The Sharjah Global Digital Quran Recitation Platform, which includes participants from 172 countries and facilitates the granting of Quranic certifications in various modes of recitation. — The Academy's commitment to Quranic research and studies as a top priority. — The Quranic museums, which showcase the history of the Holy Quran's transcription, rare manuscripts, Quranic sciences, renowned scholars, and the covering of the Holy Kaaba. The Chancellor expressed his admiration for the Holy Quran Academy, praising it as a cultural and intellectual landmark dedicated to the preservation, study, and promotion of the Holy Quran and its sciences.
