Ahead of Pune civic polls, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena eyeing leaders from other parties
Uncertain about any pre-poll alliance for the upcoming civic elections, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is going all out to make its presence felt in Pune city, where it has lost its sheen over the past few years, with only one of the 10 former corporators of the undivided party joining the Maharashtra deputy chief minister's faction.
After the Shiv Sena split led to the distribution of workers between the Shinde-led party and the Shiv Sena (UBT) of Uddhav Thackeray three years ago, all the former corporators except for Nana Bhangire preferred to continue with Thackeray. A few of the nine leaders later joined the BJP, instead of any of the two Senas.
Also, the Shinde-led Sena struggled to make its presence felt in the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
The Sena first roped in former Congress legislator Ravindra Dhangekar with the responsibility of reviving the party in Pune city. 'We will induct leaders and workers from other political parties soon. The Shiv Sena's strength will increase in the city with a focus on preparing to contest civic polls independently,' said Sena leader Dhangekar, adding that it was not known whether there would be a pre-poll alliance with Mahayuti partners, the BJP and the NCP, before the civic elections.
The Shiv Sena is all set to induct Congress leader Sonali Marne and other potential candidates for civic polls from other parties. 'I have decided to join the Shiv Sena as the Congress is not fulfilling its responsibility. The Congress is no more active,' said Marne.
Dhangekar said there would soon be a party rally in the city, where Eknath Shinde would induct Marne and other leaders.
Earlier, the Shiv Sena (UBT) inducted former MNS leader Vasant More to revive the party in Pune. The Opposition party has recently held protest rallies in the city against the ruling Mahayuti.

No big-ticket projects for the region, Nandi Hills cabinet meeting postponed
Bengaluru: The govt has postponed the much-anticipated cabinet meeting scheduled to be held at Nandi Hills on Thursday, allegedly due to the absence of significant projects to announce for Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, and Kolar districts. Instead, the cabinet will convene at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, following regular protocol. Sources say a key reason behind the last-minute change in venue was lack of approval from the finance department for several proposed projects for the region. Only a limited number of items had been listed on the original agenda, including a Rs 36 crore proposal for a new lake in Chintamani taluk, rejuvenation of 45 lakes in Sidlaghatta and 119 in Chintamani taluks under HN Valley-II Stage, costing an estimated Rs 237 crore. The cabinet was also expected to deliberate on a proposal to rename Bagepalli town to Bagyanagar. "Finance department concurrence was not received for the proposed projects, so the meeting at Nandi Hills has been deferred," said an official from the chief minister's office. The postponement has sparked disappointment among locals and lawmakers who were hoping for long-term solutions to the region's persistent water problems. Congress legislators from the three districts, besides activists, urged the govt to bring meaningful projects to the table and address the region's critical needs. In a letter to chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, the Shashwata Neeravari Horata Samiti — a local organization focused on irrigation and water issues — highlighted decades-long water scarcity in the area. The group had requested that the Nandi Hills cabinet meeting include discussions on phased water treatment under the KC and HN Valley projects, lake rejuvenation plans, and progress on the long-pending Yettinahole project. "We were ready to protest if our issues were not addressed at the meeting. Now it feels like the govt cancelled it because they had no concrete solutions to offer," said Reddy, a member of the Samiti. BJP MP from Chikkaballapur, K Sudhakar, also voiced his dissatisfaction over the cancellation. "I had high expectations for our region from this cabinet meeting," he said. "The govt must urgently fund the three-stage water treatment under the KC and HN Valley projects and allocate at least Rs 1,000 crore to accelerate the Yettinahole project." Meanwhile, Congress MLAs have reportedly pressed the govt to discuss additional regional development plans, including the proposed international flower market in Chikkaballapur, a water project for Bagepalli, and increased funding for road infrastructure. No new date has been announced for a cabinet session dedicated to the region, leaving many locals uncertain about when their long-standing issues will be addressed.

TMC, CPI(M) seek booster in Bengal, Kerala; BJP, AAP look to retain Gujarat, Punjab seats
ON THURSDAY, five Assembly seats across four states will vote in bypolls. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the CPI(M) are looking at the bypolls in West Bengal and Kerala, where they are in power respectively, as precursors to the Assembly polls slated next year in their states. The BJP wants to retain its old bastion in Gujarat, but it is also hoping to clinch another seat where the AAP is steadily growing. In Punjab, the ruling AAP is facing a challenge from not only the Congress but also the BJP. Results are out on June 23. Nilambur (Kerala) The bypoll here was necessitated by the resignation of the CPI(M)-backed Independent legislator P V Anvar. The Congress, which lost the seat in 2021 by 2,700 votes, has mounted a stiff challenge, nominating old-timer Aryadan Shoukath. CM Pinarayi Vijayan has handpicked M Swaraj as the CPM candidate. Kaliganj (West Bengal) In the 2021 Assembly polls, TMC leader Nasiruddin Ahmed won Kaliganj by 46,987 votes against the BJP's Abhijit Ghosh. It was Ahmed's second win from the seat. Ahmed died in February this year after a cardiac arrest. His daughter Alifa Ahmed is now contesting the bypoll on the TMC's ticket. She is taking on the BJP's Ashish Ghosh and the Congress's Kabil Uddin. The campaigns have been charged. The BJP has targeted the TMC over the Murshidabad riots. And the TMC has accused the BJP of communal polarisation. Visavadar (Gujarat) Visvadar in Gujarat's Junagadh district fell vacant after sitting AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani joined the ruling BJP. Bhayani is not contesting the seat, with the BJP having fielded Kirit Patel, a cooperative leader and a former district party president. The AAP has fielded Gopal Italia, one of the faces of the Patidar agitation in the state. Kadi (Gujarat) In the 2022 polls, the BJP's Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki won 53.45% of the total votes. The Congress came second. The SC-reserved seat fell vacant after Solanki died in February. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Kumar Daneshwar Chavda,while the Congress has nominated Rameshbhai Chavda. Andhra Cong chief Sharmila claims her phones were tapped with brother Jagan 'collusion' during KCR rule
The SIT is presently questioning retired IPS officer and former special intelligence branch chief T. Prabhakar Rao, the prime accused in the case, following his return to India earlier this month after about 15 months in the United States apparently to evade the probe and possible arrest. Sharmila's sensational claims come at a time when a Telangana Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government has intensified its probe into the alleged phone-tapping activities during the KCR-led BRS government in the state. Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Congress chief Y.S. Sharmila has alleged her phones were tapped by the K. Chandrasekhar Rao government in collusion with her brother and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy 'to damage my political career'. The accusation is that based on the orders of the then political bosses, certain police officers, led by Rao, kept a surveillance on phone conversations of several opposition leaders, including the now incumbent chief minister Revanth Reddy, businesspersons, civil servants and also some media personnel. The case was registered in Hyderabad in March 2024, three months after the Congress came to power trouncing the two-term BRS dispensation. A few police officers including former Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) DSP Praneeth Rao were arrested last year in connection with the case. The SIT is also questioning witnesses, probing the alleged interception of calls made to and from about 600 individuals, more so during the BRS second term up until 2-3 months before the 2023 polls. BRS leaders have been denying their involvement in any surveillance activities. On Tuesday, former minister and BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao sent a legal notice to Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Mahesh Kumar Goud, condemning his 'baseless and degrading allegations, and false claims' on phone-tapping and demanding an immediate unconditional apology from him. Goud appeared before the SIT on Tuesday to testify in the case, and accused the previous BRS government of orchestrating a massive and illegal phone-tapping network in order to outsmart the opposition parties, leaders and manipulate the election process. Talking to reporters later, Goud demanded the registration of cases against and punishment for KCR and KTR, while charging that 'mass interception of calls, messages, and chats weakened the Congress fight in the 2018 polls.' Speaking to reporters at Visakhapatnam Wednesday, Sharmila said the phone-tapping in Telangana was 'a fact, during the previous political term, when KCR was CM there (Telangana) and Jagan in Andhra Pradesh.' 'KCR, KTR and Jagan maintained very cordial relations even putting the siblings blood relation to shame,' said Sharmila, Jagan's younger sister. 'Jagan wanted to see that I do not grow politically, financially. He wanted to bury my future. People supporting me were threatened… phone-tapping was also part of this conspiracy.' Sharmila, the daughter of late Congress chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, parted ways with her brother and YSRCP chief Jagan, who was then Andhra CM, in 2021. She had then formed the YSR Telangana Party in Hyderabad to focus on Telangana politics. The YSR siblings are also involved in a bitter fight over assets and sharing of properties, a matter which went before the National Company Law Tribunal too. 'Phone-tapping in Telangana is absolutely true. I don't know if it was a joint operation or information-sharing arrangement between the then regimes but what is clear is that phones were being tapped. I was sure that my phones, my husband's and those of people close to me were being tapped,' Sharmila said, claiming it was confirmed to her by senior YSRCP leader and Jagan's close associate Y.V. Subba Reddy. 'Subba Reddy visited me at my Hyderabad residence once and informed me about this. He even played an audio conversation from one tapping for me to listen. I doubt if Subba Reddy will now admit this,' Sharmila said, suspecting Jagan's influence on him. 'But this is the truth and I am ready to depose before any investigation, promising on the Bible and on my kids,' said the Congress leader while urging the Revanth and Chandrababu Naidu governments to 'take up the issue seriously'. 'Now, the governments have changed in both states. I am willing to cooperate with any probe. The culprits should be punished. YSR siblings' bitter feud baffles AP 'Just to deflect public attention' On Tuesday, BRS Working President KTR slammed the Congress government and leaders for bringing up the phone-tapping issue 'without any evidence, merely to deflect public attention from its inability to fulfill election promises.' 'The Congress government, which failed to implement any of its guarantees since coming to power, is now indulging in theatrics using fabricated issues like phone-tapping. Making such disgraceful and unfounded accusations… without a shred of evidence, is highly condemnable,' he said, according to a press statement from his office. Referring to his questioning by the Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in connection with the alleged Formula E races scam, KTR said that 'as a law-abiding citizen, he has even cooperated with inquiries into politically motivated cases filed against him.' The BRS leader accused the Congress leaders of 'raking up the phone-tapping issue once again with the malicious intention of misleading voters in the upcoming local body elections'. 'The so-called case will yield nothing even as both the chief minister and the PCC president are competing in a race of lies,' KTR said, while warning that Mahesh Goud will be held accountable in the courts for making 'irresponsible and politically motivated remarks.'
