Babysitter's boyfriend killed toddler with ‘multiple' head punches, FL cops say
It happened at a home in Tallahassee, and first responders were summoned around 9:15 a.m. Monday, June 23, the Tallahassee Police Department said in a June 24 news release.
'Life-saving measures were immediately attempted, but sadly, the child was pronounced deceased at a local hospital,' police said.
'Initially treated as a death investigation, detectives quickly uncovered signs of foul play. An autopsy revealed the child had suffered severe injuries, including multiple strikes to the head with a closed fist that ultimately caused the child's death.'
The department's Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation, leading to the arrest of Deric Young, police said.
'Detectives learned the child was left in the care of Young, the boyfriend of the woman hired to watch the child, the night before the incident occurred,' police said. 'Detectives developed probably cause.'
Details of a motive have not been released.
Young told police he had been smoking cannabis while tending the child, the Tallahassee Democrat reported citing an affidavit. 'When I smoke, I want to play,' the newspaper quoted him as telling police.
Young is charged with murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse and cruelty toward a child/aggravated battery on a child, jail records show.

As Globe readers know, Mary Jo attended a late-night party in 1969 that Ted hosted on Chappaquiddick for the 'Boiler Room Girls' — a group of politically ambitious young women. Married Ted left the party with Mary Jo, 28, and detoured to the Massachusetts island's lover's lane, but his 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont ultimately plunged off a bridge and landed on its roof in a pond. Ted survived — but Mary Jo was left to die in the wreckage. The big shot, who succumbed to a brain tumor in 2009 at age 77, didn't report the crash for 10 hours and later claimed he'd tried to rescue Mary Jo, who some say was pregnant with his child. Leo Damore had used the resurfaced tapes to write his explosive 1988 best-seller, Senatorial Privilege: The Chappaquiddick Cover-Up, which alleges that Ted utilized the Kennedy political machine to bury the sketchy incident and attempt to salvage his White House ambitions. However, the tapes disappeared after Leo's 1995 suicide as he worked on a book about JFK mistress Mary Pinchot Meyer, who in 1964 was gunned down in Washington, D.C. Many suspect her unsolved murder was orchestrated by the CIA to keep her from revealing the agency's supposed role in JFK's 1963 assassination. Leo's son, Nick, 39, tells People the tapes were found in a briefcase under the bed of one of his father's late lawyers and contain hours of interviews, including extensive chats with Ted's late cousin Joe Gargan. In another book, Chappaquiddick Revealed: What Really Happened, author Kenneth Kappel alleges drunken Ted crashed into a tree, thought Mary Jo was dead and sought help from Gargan and friend Paul Markham. Kappel writes that the trio pushed the Olds off the bridge to make it appear as if Mary Jo had been at the wheel alone to keep Ted from being charged with vehicular homicide. Officials believe Mary Jo survived inside the death trap for hours in an air pocket. According to Leo's book, when Gargan suggested Ted call the police, the pickled politician replied, 'I'll take care of it,' but went home to sleep it off instead! Ted later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and received a two-month suspended sentence. Nick Damore declined to comment for this article.

Can GOP shock Dems in Aug. 5 special election to succeed Ruggerio in RI Senate?
The first test of how Rhode Island Republicans' message is playing in the state during the second Trump administration comes Aug. 5 in the special Senate election to replace the late Dominick Ruggerio. The GOP's Alex Asermely takes on Democratic nominee Stefano Famiglietti in the race to represent Senate District 4, covering most of North Providence and a section of northwest Providence. Republicans face an uphill battle in the Senate district, which Democrat Ruggerio represented since 1984 and which has been controlled by his extended family for more than half a century. And Ruggerio hadn't had a general election opponent since two independent candidates were on the ballot in 2012. Famiglietti, with support from the state's Democratic establishment and businesses, outspent Asermely in the campaign by more than three to one, about $32,000 to $9,000. Asermely may benefit from the fact that the district has become somewhat more conservative in recent years, in part due to boundary changes that made it more difficult terrain for Democratic primary challengers. And North Providence is among the suburbs that have tilted red since 2016. Both Asermely, 39, and Famiglietti, 33, are attorneys and residents of North Providence. Famiglietti defeated three other Democrats in the July primary. Asermely was unopposed for the GOP nomination. Where do they stand on the issues? Asemely is running on business friendliness and cutting taxes. Famiglietti's top priority is bringing back more state aid to North Providence. Gun control, a big issue in the recent General Assembly session, has not been a top issue in this race, with both candidates saying they opposed the recently passed ban on sales of assault-style weapons. And, unlike Famiglietti's primary opponents, neither candidate is calling for Mayor Charles Lombardi to step down over allegations that town employees did work on his property. "At this junction, Mayor Lombardi is facing just civil accusations and not any criminal charges," Famiglietti said. "While the accusations are severe and bears watching, we certainly cannot solely allow such accusations to determine guilt or innocence." Asermely said it's a town rather than a State House matter. Truck tolls They do, however, differ on some other big issues. The state budget assumes the truck toll network will relaunch sometime next year and provide $10 million in state revenue, although details remain scant. Is Gov. Dan McKee right to turn the tolls back on? "No, absolutely not, as it is an impediment to commerce," Asermely said. "It is an unfair burden on small businesses that gets passed on to the consumers." Famiglietti: "Yes, I am in favor of turning the truck tolls back on, as it is the most effective way to raise revenue to repair our roads and bridges without directly impacting the taxpayers. With that said, I will never be in favor of tolling passenger vehicles." Hospitals Despite extensive efforts by the state to help shore up financially struggling hospitals, the CharterCare hospitals that included Fatima of North Providence are still searching for investors to help facilitate a turnaround plan. Should the state do whatever it takes to keep them afloat? "The state should use any and all resources to save these facilities," Famiglietti said. "Both facilities are essential to our local health care system as well as our state's health care system. The loss of these facilities would cause an unbearable strain that would adversely affect care in our state." Asermely: "These are private businesses. It is not the duty of the taxpayers to bail them out. The taxpayers contribute enough through private pay, insurance, Medicare, & Medicaid. Under no circumstances should services be cut, as this is a management issue." Washington Bridge The Democratic and Republican candidates also have differing report cards for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation's handling of the westbound Washington Bridge emergency. Famiglietti said while the bridge closure has adversely affected residents, "the steps taken to allow for continued flow of traffic while safeguarding public safety have been prudent. However, we must take care that all of our roads and bridges are monitored and repaired to avoid situations like this in the future." Asermely blasted the pace of the rebuild effort and DOT's answers for how the problem arose.. "No, it has not progressed fast enough and work seems to be sporadic and slow," he said. "Transparency has been a disaster and this should have never happened in the first place." Housing Neither candidate is a fan of state efforts to build more housing by overriding local restrictions on construction or ending mandates for homes to sit on large properties. "There is little available property in Senate District 4," Asermely said. "The use of that property should be defined by the market, not the legislature." Famiglietti: "I do not support allowing more unfettered housing in District 4. My experience on the North Providence Town Council has shown me the negative effects increasing housing density has on our already densely populated community." Pensions Both candidates support restoring cost of living adjustment payments to public-sector retirees that were cut in 2011, but neither supports raising taxes to do it. School lunches Neither candidate supports providing universal free school lunch, as in Massachusetts and Connecticut. A Cincinnati City Council member is standing by her remarks about a viral brawl involving a white couple, despite outrage and calls for her to resign from community leadership. 'They begged for that beat down! I am grateful for the whole story,' Councilwoman Victoria Parks commented on a video of the violent incident posted on Facebook. The brawl, captured by a camera phone, occurred on July 26 and involved a group of Black people, including men and women, having a dispute with a white man and a white woman who eventually came to his aid. The details of the dispute are not clear; however, the viral brawl ended with the white couple being punched and kicked to the ground. The pair reportedly suffered multiple injuries and a concussion. Parks, a Democrat who has served in office since 2022, sparked public backlash from elected officials and a police union chief–some of whom called for her resignation. Her comments swiftly drew the attention of right-leaning and conservative outlets, with critics airing their grievances. 'It's unconscionable that an elected official would be celebrating violence in the very city she was voted to serve,' Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police President Ken Kober told Fox News Digital. 'This highlights the poor political environment that police officers, residents, and visitors are currently enduring. Thankfully, there's an election in November. I urge voters to vote for change!' Republican State Rep. Phil Plummer also called for Park's resignation, writing, 'Defending violent criminals who viciously beat innocent people is disgusting.' Plummer also appeared to point to the racial aspects of the incident by urging prosecutors to charge the suspects involved with a hate crime. Councilwoman Parks was even criticized by a fellow Democratic Councilwoman, Meeka Owens. 'Making comments that inflame a violent incident is never acceptable,' Owens said in a statement. She said council members should not speculate on the motives of the fight and that Parks' remarks did not reflect the council's sentiments. 'The Councilmember is entitled to her opinion; however, it is not beneficial to the city nor the region when she advocates for violence as a means of retribution,' said Owens. Parks, who had already announced in January that she was not running for re-election, did not appear to be phased by public criticism. She told Cincinnati's The Enquirer, 'In this country, we have freedom of speech; however, you may not run into a crowded theater and scream fire.' The councilwoman told the outlet that someone in the brawl said something akin to screaming fire in a crowded theater. She did not specify what exactly was said, which caused her to say the brawl was justified. 'There are unintended consequences, but that's what happened,' said Parks. 'I'm just going to let people draw their own conclusion.' According to reports, five people were charged in the incident for crimes including felonious assault and aggravated rioting. During a trip to Ohio to promote President Donald Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' U.S. Vice President JD Vance called the suspects 'lawless thugs.' 'Take the thugs who engaged in that violence and throw their asses in prison,' said Vance, who once refused to acknowledge Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, and downplayed violent threats against Mike Pence during the January 6th insurrection. Harmeet Dhillon, Trump's Assistant Attorney General of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, suggested the assault on the white couple may have been motivated by race, and that suspects could also be charged with federal hate crimes.
