Portsmouth sign Australia defender Matthews
Portsmouth have signed Australia defender Hayden Matthews for an undisclosed fee from A-League club Sydney FC.The 20-year-old, who won his first cap in November, has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with the Championship club.He is the second Australian to move to Fratton Park this month after striker Thomas Waddingham joined from Brisbane Roar.Reports in Australia say Portsmouth have paid £1.26m for Matthews - making him the most expensive defender in Australian football. "He's a really promising young centre-back and player that we've been tracking for quite some time," Portsmouth manager John Mousinho told the club website."There wasn't the opportunity to bring him over here in the summer, so we're delighted that he's been able to join us now."Hayden is someone with a huge amount of potential, but he's already played a lot of first-team games in a short amount of time."He's 6ft 5in, but is also very mobile and doesn't just rely on his height. There's a real physicality there, while he's calm and composed with the ball at his feet."

If the British and Irish Lions were playing for their very existence on their last adventure to Australia, 2025 is about keeping tradition alive for a different reason. This time they are in the rare position of leaving these shores as heavy favourites to dispatch adversaries who have sunk to eighth in the global rankings – beneath Ireland, England and Scotland – and who are fighting for their credibility as future Lions opponents. Amid growing interest – at least among supporters – in exploring the idea of tours to new destinations such as Argentina or France, the Wallabies must justify their place in the Lions' 12-year cycle. The odds are stacked against them in a series that spans Tests in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, but there are reasons why they might yet avenge 2013. Chief among them is Joe Schmidt, their master coach whose tactical insight is matched by an intimate knowledge of many of the Lions' players and management – including boss Andy Farrell – having been in charge of Ireland from 2013-19. 'Knowing Australia's coaching ticket, but also the athletes and ability they have in their squad, they will keep growing to a point that it will be as tough a series as we have ever faced. Farrell's challenge is ensuring the combined might of four nations that should make the series an unfair fight adds up to at least the sum of their parts, a task that has eluded many of his predecessors. The Ireland boss has six fixtures, starting with Friday's Dublin curtain raiser against Argentina, to shape his team ahead of the first Test.

Premier League 2025-26 opening weekend TV fixtures including Man Utd and Arsenal
The fixtures for the 2025-26 Premier League season have arrived, with fans now having to wait less than two months for the action to get back underway. And there's set to be plenty of storylines that supporters can tune into. Liverpool head into the new season as defending champions following a stunning season last time out. Arsenal went close for the third year in succession and they will certainly be aiming to go one better this time. Elsewhere, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham will also be aiming to go one better this time after dire campaigns. There's also a few new faces set to take to the Premier League pitches next term. Leeds United won the Championship title in style under Daniel Farke to end their two-year exile from the top flight. They are joined by Burnley, who finished as runners-up, as well as Sunderland who won the playoffs last season to seal a Premier League spot for the first time since 2017. Understandably, there's plenty of interest in the much-anticipated first day of the season with ten fixtures set to be spread over four days. And most games will be available for fans to watch live on TV. As champions, Liverpool get the honour of getting the 2025-26 season underway as they take on Bournemouth at Anfield on 15 August in a game that will be live on Sky Sports. Aston Villa and Newcastle then take part in the first Saturday game of the campaign which will get underway at 12:30pm at Villa Park and will be available on TNT Sports. The first Saturday evening match of the season pits Wolves against dethroned champions Manchester City at Molineux - that game kicking off at 5:30pm on Sky Sports. There are also two live games on Sunday 17 August on the same channel. FA Cup holders Crystal Palace travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in the early game. Manchester United's home game with Arsenal is arguably the standout fixture of the opening weekend and fans will be able to tune in. The sixth and final TV fixture of the opening weekend pits newly-promoted Leeds United against Everton at Elland Road. That game will take place on Monday August 18 and will kick off at 8pm on Sky Sports. Tom Lawrence has ‘three Rangers exit options' as two historic EFL clubs join big-spending Wrexham in free transfer race
TOM LAWRENCE has three English Championship sides keen to snap him up as a free agent, according to reports. The midfielder was freed by Rangers at the end of last season after his contract expired. 1 Tom Larence is mobbed after scoring against Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League Credit: Kenny Ramsay Lawrence, 31, struggled with injuries after arriving at Ibrox from Derby County, never playing more than 22 leagues games in his three years in Glasgow. In total he managed 65 appearances with 11 goals for the Light Blues. The Wales international has been the subject of interest from big-spending Wrexham, backed by ambitious Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Wrexham won promotion from League One last season and will now compete in the Championship alongside two other clubs that have emerged as potential suitors for Lawrence. According to Football League World and Welsh outlet The Daily Post, Lawrence is also being tracked by West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City. West Brom and Coventry both made pushes for Premier League promotion last season, with the Baggies missing out while the Sky Blues were beaten by Sunderland in the play-offs. Lawrence could be an replacement at the Hawthorns for John Swift, and for Jamie Paterson at the Coventry Arena. A move to Wrexham would represent something of a homecoming for Lawrence who was born in Wrexham but never actually played for the club. He first played for Everton as a youth before joining Manchester United at eight and working his way up the age groups at Old Trafford. But he never quite made the grade in Manchester and before leaving for Leicester City in 2014 he spent time on loan at Carlisle United and Yeovil Town, the latter when they were in the Championship. Rangers captain James Tavernier spotted training with ex-team-mate and old Premiership rival Ryan Porteous who branded him 'bad loser' Indeed, Lawrence has amassed the majority of his career appearances in the second tier of English football.
