Firefighters in Turkey battle to contain wildfires for second day
ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Firefighters in Turkey are battling wildfires for a second day raging in the western province of Izmir fanned by strong winds, the forestry minister and local media said on Monday
Wildfires in Kuyucak and Doganbey areas of Izmir were fanned overnight by winds reaching 40-50 kph (25-30 mph) and four villages and two neighbourhoods had been evacuated, Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said.
Helicopters, fire extinguishing aircrafts and other vehicles, and more than a thousand people were trying to extinguish the fires, Yumakli told reporters in Izmir.
Media footage showed teams using tractors with water trailers and helicopters carrying water, as smoke billowed over hills marked with charred trees.
Turkey's coastal regions have in recent years been ravaged by wildfires, as summers have become hotter and drier, which scientists relate to climate change.

Here's a look at the latest wildfire updates across the state as of 10 a.m.: The largest of the blazes was the Wolf Fire burning its way through Riverside County, according to Cal Fire. It ignited about 3 p.m. Sunday near Old Idyllwild Road and Wolfskill Truck Trail, just south of Banning. The Wolf Fire had consumed more than 1,400 acres Monday, Cal Fire said. Firefighters had built containment lines around 10% of it. Evacuation orders and warnings remained in affect for nearby residents. "Firefighters made good progress over night," Cal Fire said in a Monday morning update. "Multiple aircraft, along with hundreds of firefighters on the ground, will continue to establish containment lines. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place." The cause was under investigation. The Lake Fire burning in San Bernardino County had scorched 485 acres as of Monday. The wildfire, which broke out Saturday afternoon at the north end of Silverwood Lake, south of Hesperia, was 25% contained, according to Cal Fire. The flames spread at a "dangerous" rate, fanned by high winds amid hot temperatures and low relative humidity levels. The Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area was shut down to the public due to the fire until further notice. The cause was yet to be determined. Two smaller fires were also burning in Riverside County, including the Mindy and Mandalay fires, Cal Fire reported. The Mindy Fire, which sparked Sunday afternoon at Mindy Way and Decoursey Road in Aguanga, has grown to 100 acres in size and was 70% contained, officials said. Evacuation orders that had been issued Sunday due to the fire were lifted Monday Morning, according to Cal Fire. "Firefighters will remain on scene, working to strengthen containment lines," the agency said in a written statement. Meanwhile, the 83-acre Mandalay Fire also continued burning Monday near Tyler Street and Mandalay Court in Riverside, officials said. It was first reported Sunday afternoon. The Mandalay Fire, too, prompted mandatory evacuation orders for nearby homes in its initial phases, but the evacuations were lifted Sunday night. Building heat, hail risk take centre stage in Alberta for Canada Day
Are you ready for a booming Canada Day, Alberta? It's not just fireworks that will be making a bang in the sky, as forecasters watch for isolated thunderstorms to pop up across the province on Tuesday. Be sure to keep an eye on the radar and local weather alerts throughout the day to make sure you don't get caught in the stormy weather during celebrations. Rising temperatures across the province have prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to begin issuing heat warnings in southern parts of the province on Monday morning, including Calgary. The heat will continue to build throughout Tuesday, which will likely result in the heat warnings expanding. With the building heat also comes building thunderstorm energy in the atmosphere, however. This will help fuel a risk of isolated thunderstorms, which could interrupt some Canada Day celebrations. While the storms are expected to stay non-severe, we could see some reach the severe criteria in central and southern Alberta, including Edmonton and Calgary. The biggest risks from any severe storms that pop up will be the sudden gusty winds and large hail, both of which could cause damage to any outdoor events. Tuesday's storms won't be enough to dispel the heat, either, as we will see the heat continue to crank up and reach its peak on Wednesday. Parts of southern Alberta could see temperatures run 5-10 degrees above seasonal. The thunderstorm energy and instability in the atmosphere will also continue to build with the heat on Wednesday, once again fuelling a risk of thunderstorms across the province. This round of storms will likely be even more widespread than Tuesday's, with a better chance for thunderstorms to become severe. Heat Wave Triggers Health Alerts in Europe
The heat wave searing western Europe is set to peak in the coming days, threatening power networks and triggering health alerts. A high-pressure system combined with a stream of super-hot air from North Africa and abnormally warm oceans is baking the region from Portugal to the UK. Spain set a June heat record of 46C (114.8F) near El Granado in the south of the country, according to preliminary data. Amber health alerts have been issued for large parts of England, including London, where temperatures could reach 34C on Tuesday, according to the UK Met Office.
