Lionesses' triumph: England go to Downing Street to celebrate Euro 2025 victory

successfully defended its title
by beating world champion Spain in a shootout in the final in Basel, Switzerland on Sunday.
Having become the first England team to win a major tournament in a foreign country, the Lionesses left their hotel in Zurich on Monday morning with captain Leah Williamson carefully escorting the trophy to the bus. On returning to England, the team travelled to Westminster, central London, for a reception hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock.
The team arrived just before 7pm, with Number 10 Downing Street decorated for the occasion with St George's flags — also known as the flag of England — draped over windows and bunting along the railings.
England head coach Sarina Wiegman told Sky Sports News the Downing Street reception was 'very, very special'.
'Downing Street, you don't come there normally and it was really nice how they built it up like this,' she said, gesturing towards the flags and bunting around Number 10.
'It is very special to be able to go inside and also in the garden. The people there were very nice, they also put up some pictures of what we have done at the Euros.
'It was lovely, a very warm welcome. I've felt love all over but today even more so.'
When asked about speculation that she could be in line for an honorary damehood, the Dutchwoman said: 'I haven't thought about that. I feel so much respect from England, the Royal Family too.
'I think the most important thing is feeling valued. It's very special to get so much respect from England.'
Following almost a month of competition in Switzerland, the team's airplane branded with the word 'home' touched down at Southend Airport in south east England on Monday afternoon.
In a post on X, the team shared a photo of the Euros trophy draped in an England flag on a seat of the plane.
Holding the trophy, Williamson was first to step off the plane alongside head coach Sarina Wiegman. Outside of the airport, crowds were lined up to welcome the team.

lashed in her spot kick to give her team a 3-1 win on penalties, after a 1-1 draw following extra time. According to the BBC, a peak live audience of 12.2 million watched the game across its platforms, making it the most watched television moment of 2025 across all TV broadcasters.
It was back-to-back European trophies for England and yet another final that Kelly had a huge impact on, after also coming on as a substitute during the Euro 2022 trophy match and scoring the winner against Germany in extra time to clinch a 2-1 victory.

said the team had the royal family's 'warmest appreciation and admiration' following its win.
'The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can,' he added.
A homecoming open-top bus parade follows in central London on Tuesday, where there will be a procession along The Mall and the celebration will finish with a staged ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace.
Defender Jess Carter has not joined her team-mates for the celebrations in London as she has returned to the United States ahead of Gotham FC's NWSL match against the Chicago Stars on Saturday.
'The Lionesses have once again captured the hearts of the nation,' British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. 'Their victory is not only a remarkable sporting achievement, but an inspiration for young people across the country. It stands as a testament to the determination, resilience and unity that define this outstanding team.'

LONDON (AP) — A technical issue briefly grounded and diverted flights in Britain on Wednesday before engineers were able to restore the system, the air traffic control operator said. Airports said it would take time for disruption to clear, with many planes and crew out of position. The National Air Traffic Service, or NATS, said the glitch happened at its control center at Swanwick, southwest of London, and required the service to limit the number of aircraft flying to ensure safety. London's Gatwick Airport said the issue affected outbound flights across the U.K. Some inbound flights were put into holding patterns or diverted. Stansted, another London-area airport, said 'many departures and arrivals' were affected and advised passengers to check with their airlines. About 20 minutes after issuing an initial alert, the agency said engineers had fixed the problem and that it was 'in the process of restoring normal operations.' Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said "I am aware of a technical issue which impacted NATS' operations causing travel disruption this afternoon. 'I have been informed systems have now been restored but continued disruption is expected, and passengers should check with individual airports for advice," she said. The NATS system has suffered several software-related failures since it opened in 2002. In August 2023, a glitch meant flight plans had to be processed manually, rather than automatically. Hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled at the height of the summer holidays and some 700,000 passengers affected.

Chiefs place WR Xavier Worthy in concussion protocol a day after he banged his head in practice
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the concussion protocol Wednesday, one day after the second-year pro banged his head while trying to make a catch during training camp at Missouri Western State University. Worthy is expected to be a big part of the Kansas City offense after a dynamic rookie season in which he took advantage of the long injury absences of Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice to put up some big numbers. He finished with 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns, then had 19 catches for 287 yards and three more scores in three playoff games. Brown also missed practice Wednesday after hurting his ankle the previous day. So did fellow wide receiver Skyy Moore, who is dealing with a hamstring injury that could make it more difficult for him to make the team. The Chiefs breezed through a quick workout Wednesday before getting Thursday off. They return for three more days of practice before another day off Monday. Yankees bolster outfield, acquire veteran Austin Slater from the White Sox
CHICAGO (AP) — Austin Slater is heading to the New York Yankees. The Yankees acquired the veteran outfielder from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for minor league pitching prospect Gage Ziehl. The Yankees have a pressing need to bolster their outfield ranks with star Aaron Judge out indefinitely while dealing with a flexor strain in his right elbow. The 32-year-old Slater hit .236 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 51 games with the White Sox this season. The well-traveled Slater can play all three outfield positions. He spent the first seven-plus seasons of his career with San Francisco before being traded to Cincinnati last summer. New York will be Slater's fifth team in just over a year. The Yankees will assume $564,516 of Slater's remaining $1.75 million salary, which also will increase their luxury tax by about $621,000. The trade is the latest in what has been a busy run-up to Thursday's deadline by New York. The Yankees acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon from Colorado and infielder Amed Rosario from Washington over the last week.
