All Blacks scrum-half Roigard out of Argentina Tests

France 242 days ago
Roigard suffered a stress fracture to his foot while playing in last month's 3-0 home series sweep of an under-strength France.
Scan results confirmed he won't be fit for Tests against the Pumas in Cordoba on August 16 and Buenos Aires a week later, robbing New Zealand of a speedy half, who has emerged as a key player under coach Scott Robertson.
The 24-year-old's availability for two home Tests against South Africa in September is unclear.
Robertson will need to dig into his scrum-half depth when naming a 36-man squad on Monday to travel to Argentina.
Noah Hotham was already ruled out with an ankle injury, leaving only Cortez Ratima available from the three scrum-halves involved in the France series.
Robertson may consider a recall for 23-cap scrum-half Finlay Christie, whose last test was more than a year ago against England.
Another candidate is Otago Highlander Folau Fakatava, who made two bench appearances against Ireland in 2022.
Robertson had previously said first-choice prop Tyrel Lomax and winger Caleb Clarke will miss the Argentina Tests as they recuperate from injury, along with Hotham and back-rower Luke Jacobson.
Captain Scott Barrett is likely to be included after missing the last two French Tests with a calf muscle complaint.
His brother and playmaker Beauden Barrett is also expected to be available after shaking off an injury, along with key forwards Tupou Vaa'i, Wallace Sititi and Tamaiti Williams.

Lions hooker Sheehan banned over Lynagh incident

The 26-year-old Irishman -- who captained the side for part of the 22-12 defeat after Maro Itoje suffered a head injury -- had argued his action did not merit a citing nor was it foul play. However, an independent panel disagreed, imposing the ban, although he will miss only three games if he successfully completes a coaching intervention. "The sanction has been accepted by the player," read the judgement. "In determining foul play, the Committee found that Sheehan's actions were reckless. "The Committee found that he made head contact with the Australian player, that his action amounted to a high degree of danger and that no mitigation applied." Sheehan charged into the breakdown during the first half of the clash in Sydney, appearing to elbow Lynagh in the head. It was missed by the referee and television match official (TMO), despite Lynagh leaving the field for a head injury assessment which he failed. Sheehan will miss his province Leinster's pre-season match against Cardiff and two United Rugby Championship games with South African sides the Sharks and Stormers.

Australia name experienced squad for Women's Rugby World Cup

Sevens convert Charlotte Caslick was included in the 32-player party for the tournament in England later this month, despite nursing an ankle injury. Wing Caitlin Urwin was the sole uncapped player in the squad, which also featured teenagers Caitlyn Halse, 18, and Waiaria Ellis, 17. "We are very proud of the squad and the journey the players and staff have been on for the past two years to get to this point," Australia coach Jo Yapp said. "We have a very special group of people within this squad, diverse in culture and a range of ages and levels of experience in the game." Australia reached the quarter-finals at the 2021 World Cup in New Zealand, where they were knocked out by eventual runners-up England. Australia's opening match is against Samoa in Salford on August 23 in a tricky Pool A. England and the United States play the tournament's opening fixture in the same pool the day before. Australia's other pool matches are against the USA in York on August 30 and England in Brighton on September 6. Messi out indefinitely with 'minor muscle injury': club

The 38-year-old Argentine legend suffered an upper right leg injury early in Miami's penalty-kicks home win over Mexico's Necaxa on Saturday in a Leagues Cup match. Messi went out in the 11th minute but walked off the field and into the locker room. Messi "underwent medical tests to evaluate the extent of the muscle discomfort he experienced" that forced him out of the match, Inter Miami said in its statement. "The results confirmed a minor muscle injury in his right leg. His medical clearance will depend on his clinical progress and response to treatment." That means there is no timetable for a return by the Miami talisman, who shares the MLS season lead with 18 goals and also has nine assists in 18 matches. Jordi Alba, who netted an equalizer for Miami in second half stoppage time to set up the penalty shootout the hosts won 5-4, said Messi's early exit was "a huge sadness for the whole team." Inter Miami is 12-4 with six drawn for 42 points, fifth in the Eastern Conference and eight points adrift of league pace-setter Philadelphia but with three matches in hand. Any extended absence also would be a major blow for Miami in the Leagues Cup, which Inter won in 2023 just after Messi arrived in South Florida. Miami, which will host UNAM Pumas on Wednesday, ranks second on the MLS table to qualify for the Leagues Cup knockout stage with five points and would clinch a quarter-final berth with a victory.
