Penang makes final preparations to receive 10,000 visitors on Wesak Day
GEORGE TOWN: The final preparations for Wesak Day celebration on Monday are underway in Penang, with more than 10,000 Buddhists and visitors expected to attend the festival in the state.
A Bernama survey at the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) building in Jalan Burma here found dozens of volunteers preparing parade vehicles by decorating them with thousands of flowers, as well as setting up 10 tents in the area.
Preparations for the celebration are also going well in several areas around the state, including at the Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam, Chaiya Mangalaram Thai Buddhist Temple in Lorong Burma and the Wat Buppharam Buddhist Temple in Jalan Perak here.
According to Penang Wesak celebration committee chairman Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun, his team started preparations for the Wesak Day celebration in the past two weeks to ensure everything goes smoothly with the fire lighting ceremony to be held on Sunday night (May 11).
"Themed 'Foster True Compassion and Wisdom, Forge True Peace and Harmony', this year's celebration in Penang will feature a grand parade on Monday (May 12) starting at 6pm, a tradition since 1949.
"A total of 20 decorated floats from various associations and temples will parade for 7km starting from the MBA building and ending there,' he told Bernama.
He added that a lotus-themed exhibition from May 3 to May 12, showcasing calligraphy, paintings, performances and other Buddhist items is also being held at the MBA Building.
Meanwhile, state social development, welfare and non-Muslim religious affairs committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Wesak Day celebration which was organised as a collaboration between the state government and MBA.
She said the celebration this year will last for 10 days from May 3 to May 12 with varied programmes planned for the various communities.
"This year, on Wesak Day (May 12), visitors will have the opportunity to witness the beauty of the Buddhist festival, including a decorated chariot parade and Buddhists are invited to celebrate together.
"Over the past decade, we have not only witnessed the unity of the Buddhist community but also how goodness and positive energy can connect religion with society,' she said.
Wesak Day is the most important celebration for Buddhists to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and death of the founder of the religion, Siddhartha Gautama. It is celebrated by lighting lamps, lotus-shaped candles, scattering flowers and bathing Buddha statues.- Bernama

'For many of us, this was our first time visiting areas outside of Kuala Lumpur, and for some, their first visit to Kuantan. ASEAN is about cultural understanding and exchange,' she said. Commenting on the AIPACODD meeting, Siti Rozaimeriyanty said it was successfully held and concluded with two draft consensus papers to be presented at the upcoming AIPA General Assembly scheduled for September. Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said that among the suggestions received was a proposal for university students to travel during the day, instead of at night, to enhance safety. 'I only received information about the accident this morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries,' he said. In the tragic incident early Monday morning, 15 UPSI students lost their lives when the bus they were traveling in overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. Last victim of UPSI bus tragedy laid to rest
JERTIH: The remains of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student Nurul Fatihah Abu Setaman, who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Gerik, were laid to rest. Nurul Fatihah, 22, the last of the 15 victims, was buried at 10.39am yesterday at the Kampung Gong Duek Muslim cemetery. CLICK TO ENLARGE Earlier, a second funeral prayer was held for the first-year Bachelor of Education (Malay Language) student at her family home in Kampung Gong Duek at 10am, following the initial prayer alongside 12 of her fellow UPSI students at Masjid Hadhari at 2.55am. Nurul Fatihah, the fourth of six siblings and a former student of SM Agama Ittifakiah, died at the scene of the accident. Meanwhile, UPSI deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin extended his gratitude to all parties involved in transporting the remains of the students, from the crash site to their respective hometowns, particularly the police and Road Transport Department, Bernama reported. 'We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to all public universities involved, including Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, which provided accommodation for 160 UPSI students who travelled to Terengganu to pay their last respects to their fellow coursemates. 'This reflects the strong spirit of unity and solidarity among public universities in times of crisis,' he said after attending the burial of Nurul Fatihah. In a post on its official Facebook page, UPSI also conveyed its deepest appreciation and gratitude to all parties, both directly and indirectly involved, for ensuring the smooth handling of the entire process. 'Let us continue to pray that their souls are showered with mercy and placed among the righteous,' the post read. The tragic crash occurred between 12.30am and 1am on Monday along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih to Tanjung Malim overturned after colliding with a multi-purpose vehicle. Another 33 individuals were injured, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the car driver and three passengers.
