Legendary darts pair warned their World Cup days could be OVER after humiliating whitewash

The Sun5 hours ago

GARY ANDERSON and Peter Wright's World Cup days could be over, according to legend Colin Lloyd.
The high-class duo, with four world titles between them, were smashed 8-0 by the Netherlands in the last 16 at Frankfurt on Saturday night.
2
World No.12 Anderson and Wright had previously won the tournament together in 2019.
But they managed just three darts at a double across the match as they limped to a 79.37 team average.
Dutch duo Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert averaged over 100 and needed less than 13 minutes to take the first seven legs.
Former World No.1 Lloyd admitted time may be up for the veteran pair with Cameron Menzies now bursting into contention.
He said: 'Will it be those two performing next year for Scotland? Who knows.
'Cameron Menzies is blasting up the rankings, so we might have a different pairing next year for Scotland.'
Two-time major winner Lloyd didn't hold back in his assessment of the Scots' performance - but insisted credit also had to go to the Netherlands.
He added: 'It was a sloppy performance. They averaged 78 between them as a team.
'It was very unlike Gary Anderson and Peter Wright. I will defend them on that front.
'But let's not take away the level of performance the Dutch put in, averaging 100 as a pair.
'They had plenty of opportunities and they took them all.
'You would not expect Gary Anderson and Peter Wright to put in a performance like that.
'They would have been disappointed.
'It is a funny old game pairs. Sometimes you don't feel like you get the flow or rhythm going.
'And it very much looked like that for those two guys.
'If they were going to get beat by Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert I would not have expected it to be 8-0.
'That was a shock. Not that the Dutch beat the Scottish team but in the fashion that they did.'

Angel Gomes lauds Sir Alex Ferguson's ‘perfect' Man Utd rule that all players followed and club won't get rid of

ANGEL GOMES has hailed Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd kit policy that keeps young stars grounded. Gomes, 24, is closing on a free transfer switch to Marseille from Lille, but holds his Carrington routes close to his heart. 4 4 Fergie famously BANNED academy players from wearing anything other than old-school black boots while representing the club, and the policy remains in place even now. Gomes told the BBC that Fergie's ruling was "perfect", and instilled a sense of togetherness across the junior teams. He said: "You would play against other teams and they'd be wearing colourful boots that you wanted to wear, because your idols wore colourful boots. "But thinking about it now, it was perfect because they wanted everyone to be the same." The Man Utd way is drilled into players from the day they enter the building, with players told to earn the right to wear flashy boots once they make it into the first-team. Speaking to The Sun back in 2019, then-Man Utd star Scott McTominay said: "I probably couldn't tell you one player in the club who likes wearing black boots. "But it was the rules and something accustomed to every academy player and if someone tried to come out in red boots it's like 'you're no different to any of us so get your black boots back on until you earn the respect and right to wear coloured boots'. 'I didn't like the black boots. But you had to do it. You had to respect the rules. He added: "Whenever we were growing up here, the main thing that was being spoken about here was being a good person first and foremost. 'You don't realise at the time how much little things like that at the time are going to help you." McTominay and Gomes both came through the Carrington ranks alongside Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams. Reflecting on his time at Old Trafford, Gomes admitted that the famous red shirt can weigh heavy on Man Utd players, with countless players thriving upon being freed of it. He said: "Players may have been intimidated or not really know about the weight, what it carries and what it takes. "But ultimately, sometimes, it's down to environment, timing and having the right things in place to help you. "Some players who have left and gone on to do better than when they were at United, there might be things in place at that certain club, at that moment in time, that helped them succeed. "Sometimes it's not as black and white as they failed or they've not held their own there because of the weight of the shirt." Gomes has found his feet away from the spotlight of the Premier League, and earned his first call-up to the England squad at the beginning of the 2024/25 season. He admitted the "difficult" decision to leave Old Trafford has ultimately paid off: "There are a lot of things that pull you towards staying. "But then you have to think about what is right for your career. There were a lot of things I sacrificed."

EXCLUSIVE Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell LEAVES the club after less than a year in the role - and without making a first-team signing

Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell has left the club with immediate effect - and Andy Howe has been asked to step up to work alongside head of recruitment Steve Nickson. It was announced last month that Mitchell would be leaving by 'mutual consent' at the end of June. However, Mail Sport understands the original plan has been scrapped and the 43-year-old is no longer working for the club. He departs after less than a year in the role and without making a first-team signing. The search for his replacement is being led by Nolan Partners. As revealed last week, Nottingham Forest chief Ross Wilson is among the candidates and former Arsenal assistant sporting director Jason Ayto will be spoken to by Nolan. We can also reveal that Julian Ward, Liverpool 's technical director, is another name in the frame. Interviews are due to take place. In the meantime, the club have asked Andy Howe to work with Nickson as they look to build a squad capable of challenging on a domestic and European front next season. Howe, the nephew of head coach Eddie Howe, joined the Magpies in 2021 as head of technical scouting before being promoted to assistant head of first-team recruitment. He has played a key role in the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento and is well thought of within the club. Nickson and Andy Howe will now absorb the tasks that would have been the responsibility of Mitchell. Among Newcastle's targets are Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and Brighton forward Joao Pedro. There has been little progress in recent days but it could be that the change among the transfer team accelerates their dealings.

Thomson joins Kilmarnock after leaving Queen's Park

Kilmarnock have signed an "ambitious player with great ability" in midfielder Jack Thomson, says manager Stuart 25-year-old has joined the Rugby Park side on a two-year deal following the expiry of his contract at Queen's Park, where he played more than 130 Rangers youth product, who signed a pre-contract with the Ayrshire club in January, says the move was a "natural step" for him."The club's got a lot of history," Thomson added. "The team is always competitive, competing at a really good level. It just felt like a natural step from where I've been. "My conversations with the manager have been really positive. When I saw he was announced, I was excited."You speak to the people you know in football and try to find out as much as you can and everything that was said about the manager was really positive."And then obviously speaking to him, I have the exact same impression. So I can't wait to get on the pitch and be working with him."And manager Kettlewell, a fellow former Queen's Park player, said: "Jack is a player I've inherited and I'm delighted that's the case. He is an ambitious player with great ability and I'm confident he will fit right into our squad."
