Pontypool carer talks about ‘wellbeing' this National Carers Week

National Carers Week last week was dedicated to recognising and celebrating the UK's six million plus unpaid carers. 78-year-old Dave Mynott is a carer from Abersychan. He runs the Wednesday Dementia Club or as it's better known by locals 'The Pontypool Dementia Club.' The club is a support group for carers of loved ones with dementia. Dave has been running the group for over 15 years. Leader of the Wednesday Dementia club Dave Mynott (tall man in the centre) on a group trip with unpaid carers (Image: Dave Mynott) Dave said: 'I was helping look after my mother-in-law that had dementia and one of the staff at the hospital I worked at asked me to help set up a group. 'What we are doing is getting everyone together and enjoying each other's company. 'It seems very simple, but it's so important and valuable for people that are carers. Now it's grown to over fifty of us.' Dave talked about the emotional side of being an unpaid carer. He said: 'When you're caring particularly for someone with dementia it can feel you've lost a loved one already, they're not the same person and you can get very isolated.' Dave spoke highly of his fellow unpaid carers: 'I absolutely admire one guy who actually gave up his job to look after his mum. I think they are all awesome.' Dave had the following advice to new unpaid carers: 'Don't isolate yourself take every opportunity to socialise and look after yourself. 'They're amazing people who care for their loved ones with dementia, but they do forget to put themselves first.' In 2023 Dave was awarded the British Empire medal (BEM) in recognition of his services to people with dementia. Currently the group meet at Pontypool Museum every week. The Gwent Carers Hub in Pontypool (Image: NQ) The Gwent Carers Hub is another valuable resource for unpaid carers. Situated in the heart of Pontypool town it offers unpaid carers a safe space to talk about their caring role. A representative from The Gwent Carers Hub said: 'Looking after your own wellbeing is essential to you and the person you care for. We understand how hard being an unpaid carer is, and we are here to support you. 'Do you look after a family member, friend or even a neighbour? Do you offer support to someone without your help could not manage to live independently? If so, you are a carer.'

Mountain rescuers race to casualty near Edinburgh beauty spot in emergency response

Rescue teams were called out to a popular hiking trail just a short drive from Edinburgh after reports of an accident. Emergency crews raced to a to help a casualty at a beauty spot near Edinburgh this week. On Wednesday June 11, rescue teams were called out to a popular hiking trail just a short drive from the capital after reports of an accident. ‌ The Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue teams raced to Glentress Mountain bike trail and made their way to the casualty who had come off their bike, reports Edinburgh Live. ‌ They were assisted on to the stretcher before the casualty was handed over to the care of paramedics. A statement published online reads: "A call out came through for an accident at our regular stomping ground, Glentress Mountain bike trails. "Team members immediately deployed to our vehicles and made their way up to the casualty. "The casualty, who had come off their bike, was assessed by our team members, assisted on to the stretcher and a short carry off was made to an awaiting ambulance so the casualty could be handed over to the care of Scottish Ambulance Service staff. "We wish the casualty a swift recovery and hope they are back on their bike soon." ‌ In January, in a separate incident, we reported that a group of hillwalkers had to be rescued, after one member injured themselves while climbing a Scots hill. Images shared by Lomond Mountain Rescue team (MRT) showed mountain rescue responding to a party who had become disoriented in Achray Forest, with one member having fallen and suffering a rib injury. As the MRT were mobilising, Police Scotland Forth Valley managed to locate the missing persons who were able to walk to waiting vehicles. ‌ It came just days after a major emergency response after a hillwalker fell ill in the Pentland Hills. Police Scotland contacted the Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team on Friday, January 17, after the alarm was raised to provide support, and the team worked alongside paramedics and officers. ‌ Later that day, the rescue team was also called to assist with evacuating an injured mountain biker at Glentress. The call came in at 1:21 pm, and the team concluded their operations by 3:45 p.m, reports Edinburgh Live. The Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team explained: "It's already been a fairly lively start to the year for the team. Today saw us called by Police Scotland to assist Scottish Ambulance Service in the evacuation of an injured mountain biker from the 'Twitcher' trail at Glentress. ‌ "We got the callout at 1321hrs, and were stood down at 1545hrs, shortly after the casualty had departed in a Helimed helicopter. We wish the injured person a swift and successful recovery. "Callout 1 was to assist an injured hillwalker on the Eildon Hills. Callout 2 was to assist an unwell hillwalker on the Pentland Hills. "Callout 3 was to assist Police Scotland with a drone search for a missing person. This marked the first use of a new drone by SARAA - Search and Rescue Aerial Association, which they had only received a few days previously. "It marks a big step up in capability particularly at night with a powerful spotlight, night vision camera and massive zoom camera. TVMRT also used our new thermal scope, which was funded through recent donations." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
