Mattea Roach will be hosting an evening in conversation with bestselling Canadian author Louise Penny on Nov. 28 at Massey Hall in Toronto.
It will be broadcast on a future episode of Bookends with Mattea Roach and CBC's Live at Massey Hall series on CBC Gem and YouTube.
Quebec writer Penny will answer Roach's questions in an on-stage interview and celebrate the Oct. 28 release of her latest Chief Inspector Gamache novel, The Black Wolf.
The Black Wolf is the 20th mystery in the Inspector Gamache series and follows the investigations of the head of the homicide department of the Sûreté du Québec. In this latest adventure, Gamache and his team uncover and prevent a domestic terrorist attack in Montréal, arresting a man known as the Black Wolf.
But the arrest only uncovers a deeper conspiracy, most notably a sinister plot to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
"When I wrote The Black Wolf, I worried I'd gone too far. I no longer have that fear," Penny said in a statement.
Penny is a celebrated writer best known for her mystery series following Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. The book series includes The Grey Wolf, Still Life, Bury Your Dead, A Trick of the Light and A World of Curiosities. It has sold more than four million copies worldwide.
In 2022, the series was adapted into an Amazon Original eight-episode series called Three Pines.
Penny won the 2020 Agatha Award for best contemporary novel for the 16th book in the series, All the Devils Are Here. In 2013, she was named to the Order of Canada.
"I'm beyond excited to chat with Penny as she celebrates the release of the 20th novel in her Inspector Gamache series," said Roach.
"She is not only a talented writer, but also an amazing advocate for Quebec and Canada, and her love for her home in the Eastern Townships is evident in all her work."
"I'm also so honoured to be bringing Bookends to the iconic Massey Hall for this live show. Massey has been the site of some of my fondest concert-going memories and getting to take the stage there myself feels like a great gift."

A wrap on Edmonton's ‘good vibes only' Caribbean arts festival

Sunday's gloomy weather didn't stop the final celebrations of the Cariwest Caribbean Arts Festival in downtown Edmonton. The festivities included a lineup of DJs, food trucks and market vendors for what organizer Anna Maria Edwards said was a successful wrap-up of the three-day event. 'Our theme this year is 'good vibes only,' and we really try to make sure that that's what people felt when they came here, just the colour and the fun,' she said. Edwards reflected on the festival's history as this year marked the 41st anniversary. She estimates that tens of thousands of people came through over the weekend, especially for Saturday's parade. 'We started off just going down Grierson Hill with our parade … and there were maybe 100 people,' Edwards said. 'So it's really grown, and we're just enjoying providing such a great atmosphere of fun and enjoyment and happiness.' With files from CTV News Edmonton's Marek Tkach

This is why beloved former Toronto Raptor Serge Ibaka is back in the city

Serge Ibaka places a sticker on a Spanish restaurant in Toronto as part of the 'Serge Stamp List.' (Madri) Former Toronto Raptor Serge Ibaka was back in the city this past weekend and basketball fans couldn't help but ask: 'Could this be the return of a veteran?' In a post to his Instagram Stories, the 35-year-old centre, who was part of Toronto's first-ever championship in 2019, was seen working out at the Raptors gym. 'Maybe he'll be in the coaching staff or very likely one last season?' one person asked on a Reddit board, after the photo was posted there. 'We need Serge back working for the team for the culture,' wrote another. However, it turns out the Congolese/Spanish hooper wasn't in town for basketball business but instead focused on his other passion – food. In partnership with the Madri Excepcional, Ibaka has launched the 'Serge Stamp List,' which saw him travel around town on Sunday to hand pick his top Spanish spots. This is where he stopped: The Spanish Pig – A Canadian retailer that sells authentic Spanish food on Roncesvalles Avenue La Paella – Once a catering company, this restaurant serves authentic Spanish dishes in Toronto's Leslieville nieghbourhood Tapas at Embrujo – Described as a 'hot bed' for Flamenco, Spanish arts and cuisine in Riverdale Campo Restaurant - Located on Jane Street, north of Bloor, Campo's fare is inspired by rustic Spanish cuisine, according to chef and owner Carlos Ventura Casa Barcelona – Opened 12 years ago, Casa Barcelona bills itself as an authentic Spanish tapas bar near Bloor and Royal York Boulevard Café de Madrid – Located outside the city in Oakville, this establishment is bringing the heart of Spanish cooking and tradition to Canada, 'one paella at a time.' Ibaka last played for Real Madrid Baloncesto after he left the NBA in 2023, following stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers. He played for Toronto from 2017 to 2020 and helped the team win its first Larry O'Brien trophy in 2019. Ibaka became a fan favourite during his short time with the team, known for his defensive prowess on the court, and interesting culinary choices off of it. His cooking show, 'How Hungry Are You?,' where celebrities from in and outside of the basketball world would be treated to dishes of animal brains or worms all while conducting an interview, became a viral hit.
