'Feels Like We Have Won 3-2': Suryakumar Yadav Lauds India's Victory At The Oval
India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav summed it up best, saying the 2-2 scoreline felt like a 3-2 series win.
Team India scripted a historic turnaround at The Oval on Monday, defeating England in the final Test by 6 runs to draw the 5-match series 2-2. The hosts needed 35 runs on the final day with 4 wickets in hand. But Mohammed Siraj had different plans.
From the very first ball of the day, the Indian pacer turned the heat up, making life miserable for the English batters. He scalped three wickets in a fiery spell within the first hour, using an 80-over-old ball to deadly effect and sealing a win that will be remembered for ages.
The dramatic victory in London drew widespread applause from the cricketing world. India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav summed it up best, saying the 2-2 scoreline felt like a 3-2 series win.
'It was a lot of fun. I am feeling as if we have won 3-2. Whatever changes were made, whoever made their debut, everyone did well. This is the effort of the whole unit. I am very happy for the team. Whenever the team performs, obviously, it feels good," said Suryakumar Yadav.
When the proceedings finally began, the new ball was due in 22 balls but England went on the offensive in overcast conditions right from the start. Prasidh Krishna bowled a short ball to begin with, and Jamie Overton pulled it away for a four. An inside edge on the next ball resulted in back-to-back fours for England, reducing the target to 27 runs.
Siraj, India's consistent performer in the series, made the old ball talk in his opening over from the pavilion end, immediately getting it to shape away. The dangerous Jamie Smith (2) was beaten by the first two balls before a third one in the off-stump area took the outside edge and went to the keeper, making the Indian fans in the stadium erupt in unison.
After the much-needed breakthrough, a half chance against Gus Atkinson was created on the very next ball, but KL Rahul at second slip couldn't take it. In his next over, Siraj deceived Overton with a ball that nipped back, as the batter expected it to continue on the off-stump line.
Overton reviewed the on-field decision, but the ball was just clipping the leg stump. At that stage, England still needed 20 runs to win. Prasidh supported Siraj from the other end by reducing England to 350 for nine, with a full ball trapping Josh Tongue in front and drawing a deafening roar from the partisan crowd.
What followed next would be remembered as one of the great moments of on-field bravery.

Axar Patel likely to be ignored in Asia Cup shake-up as BCCI set to reinstate Shubman Gill as T20I vice-captain: Report
A successful tour of England, both as a captain and a batter, has opened up all sorts of avenues and triggered major speculations around Shubman Gill. A latest media report indicated that Axar Patel might lose his role in the Indian T20I set-up for the impending Asia Cup next month in the UAE as the BCCI is all set to reinstate Gill as the vice-captain. BCCI set to reinstate Shubman Gill as India T20I vice-captain(Action Images via Reuters) According to a report in RevSportz, Gill is not only certain to return to the T20I set-up for the Asia Cup, which will begin on September 9, but will also be elevated to the role of Suryakumar Yadav's deputy once again for the tournament. Gill's inclusion in the Asia Cup squad and potential return to the playing XI, will mark his first appearance in the format since featuring in the series against Sri Lanka in 2024 in July, right after India's T20 World Cup, where he did not feature. In a surprise move, BCCI selectors, in consultation with the then-new head coach Gautam Gambhir, named Gill as the new vice-captain of the Indian T20I side. However, with the 25-year-old prioritising the ODI format for the Champions Trophy earlier this year, and then Test cricket for the tour of Australia, he missed the subsequent T20I series, which left the selectors to pick Axar as the new vice-captain for the home series against England earlier this year. Besides T20Is, there is a growing consensus that Gill, who is also India's ODI vice-captain, should be elevated to the role of a skipper, keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif was among the first to raise the discussion after the tour of England, where Gill led India to a stunning 2-2 draw, while notching up a record 754 runs in 10 innings during the contest. Whether that happens remains to be seen, especially with BCCI having already confirmed earlier at the time of Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket that the 37-year-old will remain the ODI skipper. India's next ODI assignment will be the tour of Australia in October this year, where they will play three matches. Gill, meanwhile, will be seen in action later this month in the Duleep Trophy, where he will lead North Zone.

Rohit-Kohli ODI future: Will the Australia tour be their farewell series?
As India are still in the middle of enjoying the afterglow of a valiant Test series over England, attention has quietly turned from bat and ball to boardroom deliberations. The futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, titans of India's white-ball revolution, are reportedly under serious discussion. A recent report from has stirred speculation that the upcoming ODI tour of Australia in October could serve as the final act for both icons in the 50-over format. For over a decade, Kohli and Rohit have been inseparable from Indian cricket's white-ball success. With over 25,000 ODI runs between them, their legacy is sealed. However, after jointly stepping away from T20Is following India's triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup and more recently retiring from Test cricket earlier this year, questions now loom over their ODI futures. Virat, Rohit set for farewell tour? According to the report, the three-match series in Australia, scheduled to begin on October 19 in Perth, could be more than just another bilateral contest. It may become an emotional farewell tour, subtly closing the curtain on a generation-defining era. Matches in Adelaide and Sydney will follow, potentially marking their final outings in the Indian jersey. What makes this moment more pressing is the condition reportedly being discussed behind the scenes. If Kohli and Rohit intend to continue until the 2027 World Cup, selectors want a firm commitment to the domestic calendar, starting with participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year. The reasoning given echoes recent precedent too. While red-ball hopefuls had to prove their mettle in the Ranji Trophy before India's England tour earlier in 2025. For Kohli and Rohit, however, such a demand could signal the tipping point toward retirement. Selectors looking at the future Meanwhile, the selectors are already laying the groundwork for the future. With a wealth of young talent emerging across domestic and IPL circuits, the roadmap to the 2027 World Cup involves nurturing a new core. The focus has clearly shifted to long-term planning, even if it means bidding farewell to the stalwarts who shaped Indian cricket's modern identity. Having chosen their moments of exit from T20Is and Tests, Kohli and Rohit may now be preparing for one last bow in ODIs. Whether Australia becomes their final destination in international cricket remains to be seen, but the signs point toward a poignant goodbye.
