Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board aims to establish the state as a year-round destination by promoting diverse experiences beyond tiger safaris
BHOPAL: In a move to position the state as a year-round global tourism destination, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) recently concluded a high-impact two-day workshop at Bagheera Resort, Mocha, near the Kanha Tiger Reserve.
Held under the guidance of Shiv Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary of the Tourism Department, the workshop focused on diversifying tourism experiences beyond the traditional tiger safaris.
The event emphasised sustainability, adventure, and cultural integration. Stakeholders from the tourism and conservation sectors gathered to explore strategies for increasing tourist footfall, even during the monsoon closure of core zones, by promoting buffer areas through alternative tourism models.
Speaking at the workshop, Dr S K Srivastava, Joint Director of the Adventure Sports Department, said Madhya Pradesh is emerging as a hub for adventure tourism in India. Activities like skydiving, cycling safaris, and trekking are gaining popularity under the Tourism Board's Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Successful events, such as the Lake Festival in Mandla and trekking initiatives in Pench and Alirajpur, highlight the state's growing appeal.

The development of 'Pancharanya', a cultural and spiritual tourism project in Mandla and Pachmarhi, was also announced. 'Two acres of land will be allocated in Mandla to build a structure celebrating local folklore, tribal culture, and spiritual heritage,' said Dr Srivastava, adding that the project would empower local artisans and promote indigenous products.
The workshop highlighted the untapped potential of Kanha's buffer zones as tourism assets.
Amita K, Deputy Director of the Kanha Forest Division Buffer Zone, gave a presentation on eco-tourism and responsible travel, emphasising the benefits to local communities when tourism is managed sustainably.
Shreyansh Komat, CEO of Zila Panchayat Mandla, said the district's rich spiritual and tribal traditions must be showcased. 'Mandla is not just about forests and wildlife—it's a cultural landscape. We must highlight places like Mahishmati Ghat, Chaugan Madhiya, and the Panch Chowki Mahaarati as heritage destinations,' he stated.
Sessions featured discussions on wellness tourism, sky gazing, cycling tours, and eco-sensitive adventure sports. A panel of adventure operators, filmmakers, insurance professionals, and conservationists discussed how storytelling through films, documentaries, and social media could create emotional connections with wildlife and conservation.
Wildlife photographer Farhan Khan screened documentaries showcasing central India's biodiversity.
Filmmaker Nishant Kapoor stressed the power of visual media in shaping public opinion and environmental awareness.
In a significant announcement, Dr Srivastava said the Tourism Board plans to launch a helicopter service from Jabalpur to Kanha to cut down travel time. 'A helipad will be built near Mocha or the Khatiya Gate area to support this service,' he said.
Hotel and resort operators suggested renaming Khatiya Gate, claiming that many tourists mistakenly believe it lacks access to core zones or tiger sightings, which leads to confusion and discourages visits.
The MPTB, in partnership with private adventure operators, will host a series of events from 14 to 17 August, including a marathon, trekking expeditions, star gazing, and the 'Tour of Kanha' cycling event—expected to boost off-season tourism and promote Kanha as a diverse destination.
As part of the programme, attendees visited the Baiga Art Gallery in Mocha and enjoyed a live performance of traditional Baiga dance, showcasing the region's tribal culture.
Sonali Dev, SDM of Bichhiya, said adventure tourism and tribal heritage are the twin pillars of Mandla's tourism development.
Efforts are also underway to secure Green Destination Certification for Kanha National Park, similar to Pachmarhi. This international recognition, based on Global Sustainable Tourism Council standards, is expected to boost Kanha's appeal among eco-conscious international travellers.

Day after tech glitch, war delays flight at Kol airport

Kolkata: A day after a technical snag grounded an Air India Express flight, hundreds of passengers at Kolkata airport were left stranded on Monday — this time due to geopolitical turbulence in West Asia. A Qatar Airways Boeing 787-8 flight to Doha arrived at Kolkata hours behind schedule, resulting in nearly five hours' delayed departure from the city, triggering panic among passengers already jittery after the Ahmedabad plane crash last week. Flight QR541, scheduled to take off at 3.50 am, finally departed at 8.56 am, with over 200 passengers having had a tense wait. Many feared they would miss connecting flights from Doha, especially as there was no early word from the airline on the delay. "Almost 5 hours of delay in Qatar Airways Kolkata to Doha flight. No SMS, email, or any sort of communication from the authority... isn't it unacceptable?" wrote Pritam Singha Roy, a paediatric hemato-oncologist from Tata Medical Centre, who was headed to Cairo via Doha to attend a medical workshop. Speaking to TOI, Roy said the airline's website continued to show the flight as "on time" even after midnight. "We checked in, thinking all was well. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo But once inside the terminal, the display boards showed a four-hour delay. There was no staff to explain anything," he said. The delay, coupled with the fact that it was a Boeing Dreamliner — the same aircraft model involved in the recent Ahmedabad crash — sparked nervousness among passengers. As speculation mounted, many turned to the internet for answers, only to be greeted with headlines on airspace tensions and Boeing troubles, which fuelled panic. Airport sources confirmed that Qatar Airways' inbound aircraft was delayed in Doha, owing to re-routing triggered by airspace restrictions over parts of the Middle East. It was after repeated requests that airline officials clarified the reason for the delay and assured passengers of rescheduled connections. "I was worried about missing my 8.30 am flight to Cairo. Thankfully, they moved me to a 2.30 pm flight and I reached safely," Roy added. Qatar Airways, however, didn't issue a statement regarding the delay despite TOI reaching out to the airlines with the query. The conflict in the Middle East — marked by missile exchanges between Israel and Iran — has forced several carriers to cancel or re-route flights. " Passengers read up everything instantly. Any lack of communication only worsens the situation," an airport official said.

Haridwar municipal corporation halts vendor payments over Deepotsav irregularities

Haridwar: The municipal corporation of Haridwar has suspended payments to vendors involved in last year's Deepotsav celebration held on Nov 11, to mark Uttarakhand Day, after financial discrepancies came to light. The event, which cost Rs 70 lakh had already seen half the payment released before issues surfaced regarding a land deal related to the celebrations, leading to the suspension of the district magistrate and other officials. The corporation had issued a short-term tender for procuring 2.5 lakh diyas (earthen lamps) with cotton threads, 20,000 litres of sesame oil, 3,000 candles, and matchboxes for the celebration. Reports indicate that the supplier charged Rs 20 lakh for diyas and threads, and Rs 50 lakh for the oil. The total bill submitted amounted to Rs 70.36 lakh. Following objections raised by social activists, the corporation has withheld the remaining payment of Rs 35 lakh, pending a special audit. Municipal commissioner Nandan Kumar told TOI, "We have filed for special audit as per govt order. Further action will be taken accordingly based on findings." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like [Click Here] 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software Esseps Learn More Undo Social activist JP Badoni said, "The people of Uttarakhand sacrificed a lot for the formation of the state and now irregularities are now being committed in the name of Uttarakhand day celebration. The items were supplied at highly inflated prices and strict action must be taken in the matter."
