Haridwar municipal corporation halts vendor payments over Deepotsav irregularities

Time of India7 hours ago

Haridwar: The municipal corporation of Haridwar has suspended payments to vendors involved in last year's Deepotsav celebration held on Nov 11, to mark Uttarakhand Day, after financial discrepancies came to light.
The event, which cost Rs 70 lakh had already seen half the payment released before issues surfaced regarding a land deal related to the celebrations, leading to the suspension of the district magistrate and other officials.
The corporation had issued a short-term tender for procuring 2.5 lakh diyas (earthen lamps) with cotton threads, 20,000 litres of sesame oil, 3,000 candles, and matchboxes for the celebration.
Reports indicate that the supplier charged Rs 20 lakh for diyas and threads, and Rs 50 lakh for the oil. The total bill submitted amounted to Rs 70.36 lakh.
Following objections raised by social activists, the corporation has withheld the remaining payment of Rs 35 lakh, pending a special audit. Municipal commissioner Nandan Kumar told TOI, "We have filed for special audit as per govt order. Further action will be taken accordingly based on findings."

Social activist JP Badoni said, "The people of Uttarakhand sacrificed a lot for the formation of the state and now irregularities are now being committed in the name of Uttarakhand day celebration. The items were supplied at highly inflated prices and strict action must be taken in the matter."

Who was Arthur Folasa Ah Loo? Fashion designer killed at 'No Kings' protest; police say he was not the target

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo was tragically shot and killed on Saturday during a protest in Salt Lake City. He was 39. Ah Loo was a celebrated Samoan fashion designer known for dressing stars like Auli'i Cravalho and members of 'The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,' Ah Loo was attending a 'No Kings' protest when gunfire broke out. According to Salt Lake City police, he 'was not the intended target of the gunfire.' Despite efforts by first responders, he died later at a local hospital. Cravalho, best known for voicing the title character in Disney's Moana, paid tribute to Ah Loo on social media, writing, 'There are no words to hold the grief of losing you. Your artistry will never be forgotten; and neither will your peaceful protest. My deepest condolences, sympathies and Aloha to his family, and all who felt his impact.' Two men who were acting as part of the protest's 'peacekeeping team' were detained after the shooting. One of them reportedly fired the bullet that struck Ah Loo. Police said the men confronted Arturo Gamboa, 24, after spotting him manipulating an AR-15-style rifle away from the crowd. When they ordered him to drop the weapon, Gamboa allegedly ran into the crowd with the rifle in a 'firing position.' One of the 'peacekeepers' fired three shots, striking both Gamboa and Ah Loo. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jlo's Daughter Steals The Show With Her Mom's Iconic Green Dress CleverClassic Undo Gamboa was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on a murder charge. His work was well loved in the Polynesian community and gained wider attention after he appeared on Project Runway in 2019. Although he left the show early, his designs were well received. In the years that followed, he dressed several well-known Pacific Islanders. Moana 2 co-director David Derrick Jr. called him a 'pillar in the community' and added, 'I already miss you Uso. 'Instead of baking something, I fried it and I almost burned down the kitchen... The teacher was like, 'I think cooking is not your thing. I think maybe we should switch you over to sewing. '' Outside of his career, Ah Loo focused on his family. He often made clothes for them and dedicated a full collection to his daughter Vera. 'Dedicated to her and her free spirit and love for everything and anything creative!' he wrote. Ah Loo also co-founded Creative Pacific, a nonprofit that supports Pacific Islander artists and designers. The organisation was set to host a fashion show at the end of July, according to NBC News. No new tariffs after Bilateral Trade Agreement: India wants US assurance

India wants an assurance from the US that no additional tariffs will be imposed by the Donald Trump administration once the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) is finalised, said people familiar with the matter. The deal is in the final stages of negotiation and both sides are hopeful of reaching accord quickly. India has sought concessions for labour-intensive sectors such as leather and textiles. 'We have put everything on the table,' said one of the persons, adding that India wants stability in tariffs once a deal is rolled out. Trade agreements typically include renegotiation clauses, or compensation from the partner effecting a tariff increase. India would like the pact to provide for such a mechanism. 'This would ensure the agreement is ring-fenced from prospective changes,' said another person. The US President on April 2 announced a reciprocal tariff of 26% on goods imports from India as part of its trade levies all over the world. These tariffs were paused for 90 days until July 9. However, the baseline tariff of 10% remains in force. India and the US are looking to finalise the BTA ahead of the deadline. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elegant New Scooters For Seniors In 2024: The Prices May Surprise You Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Learn More Undo Timebound BTA Needed An assurance from Washington is required to ensure tariffs negotiated within the framework of the trade deal remain ring-fenced from any changes effected later by the US, said a third official detailing India's concern. There is also Trump's mercurial nature. Live Events Independent experts are agreed on the need for such a clause. 'The BTA should be timebound and not in perpetuity,' said an expert on trade issues. 'India must insist on a clawback provision — that it will withdraw benefits if the US raises tariffs or goes back on any of its commitments.' Negotiations Officials said Washington has to find a way to reduce tariffs as New Delhi has sought concessions for sectors such as textiles and leather, as mentioned above. The Trump administration currently requires approval from the US Congress to lower levy below most favoured nation (MFN) rates, but it does have the authority to scrap reciprocal tariffs. 'We want preferential and sustained trade advantages and have left it to the US to decide the route it takes to reduce its tariff barriers—whether through the Trade Promotion Authority or by seeking Congressional approval,' said one of the officials cited earlier. The government is also monitoring the impact of the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium and the 25% tariffs on auto. While the auto components sector doesn't expect a big dent for now, there may be an impact if the tariffs persist. According to the official quoted, India will pursue a concession, if others get one. Early Harvest Both sides have had several rounds of discussions on the proposed trade deal and are hopeful of concluding at least an early harvest deal. 'We are working on the early tranche, and there is a date (July 9), before which we would like to conclude this. The progress is good,' commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal said on Monday. A US trade team is in India last week to firm up the contours. India has made it clear that any meaningful expansion in bilateral trade will require a significant reduction in US tariffs. Both sides aim to more than double such trade to $500 billion by 2030. However, a Delhi-based trade expert cautioned, 'India should rethink its proposed BTA with the US. The US has a history of incomplete trade deals, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. It has retracted its WTO commitments also. Moreover, the future of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity hangs in the balance with the US-China trade deal.'
