South Africa pig farm murders: Adrian de Wet walks free as he turns state witness
Mr De Wet, a supervisor on the farm, will testify that he was under duress when he was forced to throw their bodies into the pig enclosure, according to both the prosecution and his lawyer.William Musora, 50, another farm worker, is the third accused. He and Mr Olivier, 60, are yet to enter a plea and remain behind bars.Mr De Wet's lawyers say he has truthfully disclosed what transpired on the night Ms Makgato and Ms Ndlovu were killed in August 2024. Shortly after court adjourned on Wednesday, he walked out of the court as a free man and was whisked away by his lawyers, while Ms Makgato's brother Walter Makgato sobbed outside the court building. He told the BBC that the release of one of the men allegedly involved in the killing of his sister means justice will not be served. Mr De Wet will be taken into protective custody until the end of the trial.The case has caused widespread outrage across South Africa which has exacerbated racial tension between black and white people in the country.This is especially rife in rural areas of the country, despite the end of the racist system of apartheid 30 years ago.Most private farmland remains in the hands of the white minority, while most farm workers are black and poorly paid, fuelling resentment among the black population, while many white farmers complain of high crime rates.The trial is set to resume on 6 October.

Paul Hollywood appeals for information after brother attacked
TV star Paul Hollywood has made an appeal for information after his brother was allegedly 'kicked in the face' and 'punched to the floor' on Friday night. The Great British Bake Off judge shared a post on Sunday on his Instagram page which described his brother Lee being attacked when he was walking his dog in Wirral. Hollywood said: 'If you have information regarding this attack on Friday night, the person in question who was attacked is my brother Lee. Any information please follow details above Thankyou.' He also shared a statement issued by Wirral police on Facebook which described the incident. The statement said: 'The man, who is in his 50s, was walking his dog on Links View Playing fields near to Shackleton Road at around 7.10pm when his dog and another dog, which was being walked by another male, began barking at each other. 'The dogs were separated by the other male who then became irate. As the man walked away he was approached from behind and punched to the floor by the male. He was then kicked in the face and back before the male made off. 'The man suffered injuries to his back and face and was taken to hospital for treatment. 'An investigation is under way and witness and CCTV inquiries are in the process of being carried out.' Detective Inspector Phil Ryan described the incident as a 'nasty' and 'unprovoked assault' and also asked for anyone with information to come forward. He said: 'We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Links View Playing fields or Shackleton Road at around 7pm last night who heard or saw the incident or saw the male leaving the area to contact us.'

A US tourist who flew to Puerto Rico for a Bad Bunny concert was fatally shot, police say
A U.S. tourist who was visiting Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny 's residency was fatally shot early Sunday at La Perla, a popular seaside shantytown, police said. The victim was identified as Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old who lived in New York, according to a police statement. The shooting happened in the predawn hours at a nightspot called 'Shelter for Mistreated Men' in La Perla, a coastal community that has struggled to shed its dark reputation. Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz said in a phone interview that the shooting took place when several people near Mares began arguing and one pulled out a gun and shot at least three people, including Mares. Two other men who live in La Perla were injured and remain hospitalized. Ruiz said Mares was an innocent bystander. He was with three other friends who told police they were in Puerto Rico for one of Bad Bunny's 30 concerts, which have attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the U.S. territory. Mares was shot on the left side of his abdomen and was taken to Puerto Rico's largest public hospital, where he died, authorities said. Ruiz said police don't yet know what the people were arguing about and don't have a description of the shooter. 'We have very little information,' he said. Ruiz added that Mares' three friends also were from New York. He didn't have their hometowns. La Perla is located on the outskirts of a historic district popular with tourists known as Old San Juan. A couple hundred people live in the shantytown, which once served as Puerto Rico's biggest distribution point for heroin and was known for its violence. Police used to avoid the community, which used to have a sign proclaiming, 'Not open to visitors. Do not enter.' But violence eased when hundreds of federal agents raided the slum in 2011 and arrested dozens of people, including a well-known community leader who was later convicted. The neighborhood became even safer and more welcoming after Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featured it in their hit, 'Despacito.' But isolated, violent incidents persist. In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after police said a person told them to stop filming inside the community. Then in April 2024, a 24-year-old tourist from Delaware was killed and his body set on fire after police said he and a friend were attacked following a drug purchase. Police said the victims were trying to take pictures of La Perla after being warned not to do so. The island of 3.2 million people has reported 277 killings so far this year, compared with 325 killings in the same period last year.
