Chaos as protesters clash at parliament
A group of women's rights demonstrators and pro-trans counter-protesters have clashed in a protest that turned violent in Melbourne's CBD.
A 'Women Will Speak' event was organised by Women's Voices Australia, and was criticised by counter-protesters as an anti transgender rally.
Almost 100 police officers were granted extra powers under the Control of Weapons Act to try to defuse the situation, and conduct weapons searches.
Spring Street is closed to traffic between the Princess Theatre and the Old Treasury Building.

The 'Women will speak' event on the steps of parliament, is calling for 'women's rights to single-sex change rooms and sporting competitions'.
Meanwhile, a social media page for the 'Trans Liberation Counter Protest' organised by trans activists called on people to 'come counter the anti-trans rally.'
'We reject their oppressive ideology, we are taking to the streets to drown them out,' a post said.
'We organise against the colonial-capitalist agenda, fascism, and trans liberalism alike, as all are killing us.'

Former Brisbane Broncos player Teui 'TC' Robati has pleaded not guilty to raping a woman twice during an alleged encounter in Fortitude Valley in late 2022. Crown prosecutor Isabelle MacNicol told the jury on Monday that the woman had met Mr Robati, along with at least one other Broncos player, earlier that evening at The Prince Consort Hotel in Fortitude Valley on December 11, 2022. The court was told the woman had been out that evening drinking with friends before she encountered Mr Robati at the hotel. 'After about 15 seconds, she started to gag feeling like she was going to vomit,' Ms MacNicol said. She told the court the woman then said she needed to go to the toilet before getting dressed and leaving. Mr Robati's defence barrister told the court the case would hinge on two key arguments: first, that the sexual acts were entirely consensual and initiated willingly by both parties; and second, that even if the jury found the woman did not consent, Mr Robati held an honest and reasonable belief that she had, a belief which, even if ultimately mistaken, would form a crucial part of the defence's case. The jury was shown a prerecorded video of the complainant's evidence and her cross-examination, which was conducted in a closed session. Mr Robati was stood down by the Brisbane Broncos in February 2023, just weeks before the start of the NRL season, after the allegations became public. He has not played in the NRL since. Pheobe's mum slams charity fundraiser
The mother of missing Queensland teenager Phoebe Bishop has slammed a fundraiser raising money in her daughter's name. Ms Bishop, 17, was declared missing after she failed to check-in for a flight from Bundaberg to visit her boyfriend in Western Australia on May 15. On Friday, police said they found human remains near the Good Night National Scrub Park outside of Gin Gin, but were yet to confirm if they were Ms Bishop's. The teen's roommates, James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, have been charged with her murder and are alleged by police to have moved her body multiple times. Amid an outpouring of grief, Ms Bishop's mother, Kylie Johnson, took to social media on Sunday to condemn a GoFundMe campaign set up in her daughter's name. 'This hasn't been approved or supported by the family,' Ms Bishop wrote on Facebook of the campaign, which was titled 'In memory of Phoebe Bishop'. The campaign appeared to have been suspended after raising just $24. A separate GoFundMe campaign, which has been endorsed by Ms Bishop's family, has raised more than $6000 to a goal of $17,000. Organised by Tracey Berends, the campaign is aimed at raising money for the SES and agencies working to find Ms Bishop, and those that supported her in her life. 'We would also like to be able to donate to the YSchool in Bundaberg on Pheobe's behalf where Pheobe thrived from their support and guidance,' Ms Berends wrote.
