Chaos as protesters clash at parliament
A group of women's rights demonstrators and pro-trans counter-protesters have clashed in a protest that turned violent in Melbourne's CBD.
A 'Women Will Speak' event was organised by Women's Voices Australia, and was criticised by counter-protesters as an anti transgender rally.
Almost 100 police officers were granted extra powers under the Control of Weapons Act to try to defuse the situation, and conduct weapons searches.
Spring Street is closed to traffic between the Princess Theatre and the Old Treasury Building.
Victoria Police told NewsWire, they will not be commenting on the situation until later in the evening. Pro-trans activists gather along Spring Street. The 'Women will speak' event on the steps of parliament, is calling for 'women's rights to single-sex change rooms and sporting competitions'.
Meanwhile, a social media page for the 'Trans Liberation Counter Protest' organised by trans activists called on people to 'come counter the anti-trans rally.'
'We reject their oppressive ideology, we are taking to the streets to drown them out,' a post said.
'We organise against the colonial-capitalist agenda, fascism, and trans liberalism alike, as all are killing us.'

Ex-NRL star Teui ‘TC' Robati on trial for alleged rape in Fortitude Valley
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. WARNING: Graphic details A Brisbane jury was told a woman began to 'gag' and felt like she was going to vomit as a former NRL player allegedly forced her to perform oral sex in a hotel toilet. Former Brisbane Broncos player Teui 'TC' Robati has pleaded not guilty to raping a woman twice during an alleged encounter in Fortitude Valley in late 2022. Crown prosecutor Isabelle MacNicol told the jury on Monday that the woman had met Mr Robati, along with at least one other Broncos player, earlier that evening at The Prince Consort Hotel in Fortitude Valley on December 11, 2022. The court was told the woman had been out that evening drinking with friends before she encountered Mr Robati at the hotel. Former Brisbane Broncos player Teui 'TC' Robati allegedly forced a woman to perform oral sex in a disabled toilet at a Fortitude Valley hotel. Picture: NewsWire/Tertius Pickard She alleged Mr Robati invited the woman upstairs to an event, where he led her into a disabled toilet where she believed he was going to offer her a 'line of cocaine'. 'The door closed and almost immediately he put his arms around her neck and started kissing her,' Ms MacNicol said. Inside the toilet, Mr Robati allegedly pulled his pants down and told the woman to 'suck it' despite her saying she did not want to have sex, the court was told. 'She was scared, she started pacing. She covered her eyes, as she didn't want to look at the defendant's penis,' Ms MacNicol said. 'She said 'I don't want to do this, I don't know why I'm here'.' The woman felt 'pressured and compelled' and then performed oral sex on Mr Robati without her consent, the prosecutor told the court. 'The defendant didn't take no for an answer,' she said. Mr Robati is standing trial on two counts of rape. Picture: NewsWire/Tertius Pickard The court was told she momentarily stopped before he forced her head down again. 'After about 15 seconds, she started to gag feeling like she was going to vomit,' Ms MacNicol said. She told the court the woman then said she needed to go to the toilet before getting dressed and leaving. Mr Robati's defence barrister told the court the case would hinge on two key arguments: first, that the sexual acts were entirely consensual and initiated willingly by both parties; and second, that even if the jury found the woman did not consent, Mr Robati held an honest and reasonable belief that she had, a belief which, even if ultimately mistaken, would form a crucial part of the defence's case. The jury was shown a prerecorded video of the complainant's evidence and her cross-examination, which was conducted in a closed session. Mr Robati was stood down by the Brisbane Broncos in February 2023, just weeks before the start of the NRL season, after the allegations became public. He has not played in the NRL since. The trial is expected to run for three days. Originally published as Ex-NRL star Teui Robati accused of rape in pub's disabled toilet

Pheobe's mum slams charity fundraiser
The mother of missing Queensland teenager Phoebe Bishop has slammed a fundraiser raising money in her daughter's name. Ms Bishop, 17, was declared missing after she failed to check-in for a flight from Bundaberg to visit her boyfriend in Western Australia on May 15. On Friday, police said they found human remains near the Good Night National Scrub Park outside of Gin Gin, but were yet to confirm if they were Ms Bishop's. The teen's roommates, James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, have been charged with her murder and are alleged by police to have moved her body multiple times. Amid an outpouring of grief, Ms Bishop's mother, Kylie Johnson, took to social media on Sunday to condemn a GoFundMe campaign set up in her daughter's name. 'This hasn't been approved or supported by the family,' Ms Bishop wrote on Facebook of the campaign, which was titled 'In memory of Phoebe Bishop'. The campaign appeared to have been suspended after raising just $24. Credit: Newswire On Monday, the campaign appeared to have been suspended after raising just $24, stating that: 'This fundraiser is no longer accepting donations'. According to the GoFundMe page, the campaign was organised by a Winfield woman and featured images of the teenager. Riddled with typos, the campaign featured a stated goal of raising 'monies' for 'Pheobe's mother, Kylie, to help the family, to donate to where they choose'. A separate GoFundMe campaign, which has been endorsed by Ms Bishop's family, has raised more than $6000 to a goal of $17,000. Organised by Tracey Berends, the campaign is aimed at raising money for the SES and agencies working to find Ms Bishop, and those that supported her in her life. 'We would also like to be able to donate to the YSchool in Bundaberg on Pheobe's behalf where Pheobe thrived from their support and guidance,' Ms Berends wrote. On Friday, police found human remains near the Good Night National Scrub Park outside of Gin Gin. 'We want her legacy to live on and by paying it forward to the amazing volunteers and community. 'All funds raised will be donated to these carefully chosen community groups that work to support our Wide Bay community.' A further GoFundMe campaign purporting to be raising money for 'any individual family member or legal representative' was still online on Monday, The organiser, Melbourne-based Dilraj Dilraj, said 'being conducted independently' and was not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the family of Phoebe Bishop. A candlelight vigil at Kolan Community Park in Gin Gin was held on Sunday in honour o Pheobe Bishop. NewsWire / Paul Beutel Credit: News Corp Australia 'Funds raised will be allocated towards facilitating public memorial efforts, awareness activities, community response co-ordination, and covering administrative and professional costs necessary to manage this campaign appropriately,' the campaign stated. As of Monday afternoon, the campaign had raised only $50 from one donation to a goal of $3m. It comes after a candlelight vigil at Kolan Community Park in Gin Gin was held on Sunday in honour of the missing teen. A second candlelight vigil is expected at Buss Park in nearby Bundaberg on Monday from 5pm.
