Pakistan-India ‘World Championship of Legends' cricket match called off amid tensions

Arab News6 days ago
ISLAMABAD: A match between veteran cricket stars from India and Pakistan as part of the 'World Championship of Legends (WCL)' tournament was called off on Sunday, the league announced after Indian players withdrew due to political tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.
Sporting ties between arch-rivals India and Pakistan have remained limited due to political tensions between the two countries. Both countries engaged in the worst fighting between them in decades in May this year before a ceasefire was brokered by Washington on May 10.
The WCL is a T20 tournament approved by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) h in England every year. The WCL features retired and non-contracted players from cricketing giants, including England, India, Pakistan, Australia, West Indies, and South Africa.
In a statement released on its social media accounts, the WCL said it had decided to hold the India-Pakistan match in Birmingham after news that the Pakistan hockey team will be coming to India this year, and witnessing the recent India vs Pakistan under-16 volleyball match in Thailand.
'But maybe in the process, we ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions,' the WCL's message read.
'More than that, we unintentionally caused discomfort to our Indian Cricket Legends, who have brought so much glory to the country, and we ended up affecting the brands who supported us purely out of love for the game.'
WCL said it was due to these reasons it had decided to call off the match.
'We sincerely apologize again for hurting the sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans,' it concluded.
The league's owners include its founder, Indian entrepreneur Harshit Tomar and Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn.
The statement came hours after Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan wrote on X that he was withdrawing from India's WCL matches with Pakistan.
'My country is everything for me and nothing is worth more than that,' he wrote.
Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota.

The second edition of the WCL started on July 18 in Birmingham and has seen three matches played so far. Pakistan played the opening game of the tournament but Sunday's clash was going to be India's first.
Former Indian batter Yuvraj Singh is leading the India side while ex-Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez is leading the green shirts.

Niemann, Grace, Meronk tied for individual lead at LIV Golf UK

ROCESTER: Similar to last season, Joaquin Niemann entered this week's LIV Golf UK by JCB as the season-long points leader, with Jon Rahm in hot pursuit. The Torque GC captain is determined to write a different ending this time. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Niemann, a four-time winner this season, shot a bogey-free 65 on Friday at JCB Golf & Country Club to grab a share of the first-round lead with Cleeks GC's Adrian Meronk and Stinger GC's Branden Grace. The trio are one shot ahead of Majesticks' co-captain Lee Westwood, RangeGoats' captain Bubba Watson, and Niemann's Torque teammate Carlos Ortiz. The team leaderboard is also tightly bunched at the top with defending UK champions Legion XIII tied with Stinger and Torque at 11 under. Six other teams are within five shots of the lead. Rahm won the individual UK trophy for his first career LIV Golf victory a year ago, using it as a springboard to catch Niemann for the season-long Individual Championship in the regular-season finale. Niemann entered this week with a 15-point lead over Rahm and is now in a great position to build on his advantage, as Rahm shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 32nd. Crushers' captain Bryson DeChambeau, who is in third place in the standings, is tied for 11th after a 68. Based on projections after Friday's first round, Niemann would leave England with a 44-point lead, which would mean he would be guaranteed pole position in the standings going into the regular-season finale, LIV Golf Indianapolis, to determine the Individual Championship next month. Niemann, who birdied four of his first six holes, said: 'I'm in a really privileged situation to be on top of the rankings and being chased by Jon and Bryson. It just makes me a better athlete. I like that pressure.' Unlike Niemann, the other two players who share the lead are fighting different battles. Grace has spent most of the season in the drop zone (49th and below in points) and facing relegation while battling wrist problems, but the South African has found his form recently. He tied for fourth earlier this month in Andalucia, a result that moved him out of the drop zone, and he continued his fine play with a round that started hot (three birdies in his first four holes) and ended the same way. Meronk, meanwhile, returned to the kind of form on Friday that secured him the season-opening tournament in Riyadh. His 65 was his best score, relative to par, in his last 25 LIV Golf rounds. The Polish star, who finished with four birdies in his last five holes, said: 'Finally, I'm enjoying myself on the course and playing good golf again, which is quite exciting. 'It's great to be back in this position, and I'm really looking forward to this weekend and to three more tournaments this year.' Of the top eight players on the leaderboard, three are from England, led by the resurgent Westwood, the 52-year-old legend who tied an Open Championship record last week at Royal Portrush by shooting a back-nine 29. Legion XIII's Tyrrell Hatton and the Crushers' Paul Casey, the other two Englishmen on the front page of the leaderboard, are tied for seventh after shooting 67s. All six English players on the LIV Golf roster received huge support from a packed and enthusiastic gallery at JCB, which is hosting the tournament for the second successive year and will return as a host course next season. 'It feels like our home event, and it's always nice to perform in front of home fans,' said Westwood, who played with fellow Englishmen and Majesticks' teammates Ian Poulter and Sam Horsfield on Friday. The crowd was especially vocal at the par-3 14th. 'It's a fun atmosphere,' said Hatton, who tied for second last year to his captain Rahm. 'There were a lot of people there, and the music was good too. I think most of us probably enjoyed a singalong down that hole.' TEAM SCORES LIV Golf's new scoring format this season now involves all four scores counting in every round in the team competition (click here for more on the new format). Fast bowler Afridi back in Pakistan squad for white-ball series against West Indies in US

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recalled fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi for the white-ball cricket series against West Indies, starting at Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida. The three Twenty20 matches in the US — on July 31, Aug. 2 and 3 — will be followed by three ODI games in Trinidad and Tobago. Afridi, who is also in the ODI squad, was surprisingly excluded from Pakistan's last two T20 series against Bangladesh despite leading Lahore Qalandars to its third Pakistan Super League title in the last four years with a rich haul of 19 wickets this year. In Afridi's absence, Pakistan routed Bangladesh 3-0 at home but lost 2-1 to Bangladesh at Dhaka in a series which ended Thursday. Fast bowler Haris Rauf, who was forced to miss the series against Bangladesh because of a hamstring injury he sustained during Major League Cricket (MLC) in the US, has recovered and was named in the T20 squad. Pakistan's pace attack was further strengthened Friday with the return of Hasan Ali for both T20s and ODIs against West Indies. The selectors dropped pace bowlers Abbas Afridi and Salman Mirza, who both participated in the T20 series in Bangladesh, and retained all-rounders Hussain Talat and Mohammad Nawaz. Middle-order batter Hasan Nawaz is the only uncapped player named in the ODI squad. Nawaz scored Pakistan's fastest-ever T20 century against New Zealand in March this year. Salman Ali Agha will continue to lead the T20 side while wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan was named skipper for the ODI series. Twenty20 squad: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem. ODI squad: Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Salman Ali Agha, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sufiyan Muqeem.

Joe Root becomes the 3rd highest scorer in test cricket against India

Joe Root became the third highest run scorer in test cricket on Friday as he helped England reach 332-2, only 26 runs behind India. Root was 63 not out at lunch on day 3 of the fourth test at Old Trafford with Ollie Pope 70 not out. The 34-year-old Root overtook India's Rahul Dravid and South Africa's Jacques Kallis in overall runs scored. Root's current total is 13322, needing 57 more runs to overtake Australia's Ricky Ponting (13378) but still far behind first-placed Sachin Tendulkar (15921). Of more importance for England was a commanding opening session in Manchester with the host heading for a substantial first-innings lead and hoping to clinch the five-match series, which it currently leads 2-1. Resuming on 225-2 and replying to India's first innings of 358, Root and Pope were both on half centuries as the visitors struggled to have any impact with the ball. But Root's day could have ended early when he survived nearly being run out on 22 following a miscommunication with Pope that left him way out of position when Ravindra Jadeja tried to capitalize. Before that, Root narrowly avoided being out leg before wicket. England scored 107 off 28 overs in the morning session. England carried on its impressive batting from day 2 when it took control of the match with a blistering opening partnership of 166 by Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.
