‘We hear stories': Red Sox playing Rays at Yankees' ‘Boom Box' spring home

Yahoo14-04-2025
TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Rays' game notes include a tidbit titled, 'Boom Box.' It notes there have been 31 homers hit in the first 12 games at the Rays' temporary home, George M. Steinbrenner Field. There have been 26 homers hit here over the past six games (4.3 per game).
Tampa Bay is playing here at the Yankees' spring training home during the 2025 season while Tropicana Field is being repaired. Hurricane Milton caused $55.7 million of damage to Tropicana Field, per the Associated Press.

'Obviously we have no idea how it's going to play. We hear stories about it,' Red Sox manager Alex Cora said here Monday, hinting at the way the ball flies out of here. 'But we just gotta show up and try to win the series.'
The Red Sox' Wally home run head was sitting in the visitors clubhouse waiting to be used before the first game of Boston and Tampa's three-game series Monday. But how many times will it be used?
The Red Sox are tied for 21st in the majors in home runs with just 12 in 17 games.
Boston is sixth in the majors in runs with 77 but 40.2% of those runs came in two games against the Cardinals. So Boston has scored 46 runs in its other 15 games, an average of just 3.1 runs per game.

Is this the perfect place for Boston's offense to break out?
'Obviously facing a tough pitching staff, it's hard to do,' Cora said. 'But we feel like we are a capable team offensively. So hopefully we can hit a few balls in the air and start having fun again.'
Cora said the ballpark renovations were done well.
'We like it. They did a good job,' he said. 'The cage, especially. We saw it during spring training. They did an amazing job. Very spacious. The weight room is good. It's a good facility.'

Will the Boston Celtics get a breakout season from Sam Hauser?

Sam Hauser has been with the Boston Celtics since he was signed as an undrafted rookie in 2021. He's steadily developed into one of the best sharpshooters in the NBA and is arguably a top-five shooting threat off the catch in the league. Hauser has also proven himself to be a viable defender, even when isolated in space, further driving up his value to the Celtics, both as a starter and a member of the second unit. Given Joe Mazzulla's affinity for a perimeter-based offense, Hauser is undoubtedly one of the more important role players in the rotation. The floor spacing his presence provides, even on poor shooting nights, is hard to replicate. Teams respect the threat he poses, both when stationary or when coming off screens. However, that didn't stop Hauser's name from being floated in trade rumors earlier this summer. It's for that reason that Sam LaFrance and Jack Simone have discussed Hauser's overall importance to the Celtics roster for the upcoming season and beyond. After all, as a re-tooling roster, everybody outside of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and potentially Payton Pritchard will be available at the right price. The duo discuss the shooting talent that Hauser brings to the rotation, along with his value when the Celtics are back to being a contending team, which is expected to be within a two year window. Tigers Blockbuster? Detroit Linked To $120 Million Superstar Free Agent

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman was one of the bigger stories to follow during last year's free agency period. He landed a massive $120 million deal with the Red Sox that includes an opt-out clause after this season. Considering how well Bregman is playing, it seems like he's going to opt out of this deal and pursue a five, six, or seven-year contract worth north of $200 million. The sweepstakes will likely be hotter this year than last. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently suggested the Detroit Tigers would pursue Bregman in free agency again if the star lands there after the season. HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 12: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox runs the bases after a two run home run during the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August... HOUSTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 12: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox runs the bases after a two run home run during the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on August 12, 2025 in Houston, Texas. More"Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his contract and seek a longer-term deal," Bowden wrote. "He missed time this season with a quad injury but has hit .299/.379/.542 in 327 plate appearances. It appears Boston would be his first choice in free agency, but he is an obvious fit with several other contending teams, including the Phillies, Yankees, Tigers, Dodgers, Mariners, and even the Mets." The Tigers will likely pursue Bregman again, but the money will always become an issue in this circumstance, especially if Detroit is going to try to re-sign Tarik Skubal when he lands in free agency at the end of next season. The Tigers could surprise everybody and land the star infielder, but it would mean outbidding the Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, New York Yankees, and others. It's unlikely. Series Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs San Francisco Giants

The Tampa Bay Rays have had an up-and-down road west coast swing thus far as they've sandwiched a series sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners between a couple of series victories over the Los Angeles Angels and Athletics; now, the Rays will complete their journey out west with a three game series in San Francisco. By taking two of three over the Athletics, the Rays improved to 59-63 on the season and sit 5.5 games back of the Yankees in the Wild Card chase; the Rays will need to go 28-12 the rest of the way to reach 87 wins which is what it'll likely take to reach the postseason. The Giants meanwhile are in a similar spot. After teetering around .500 over the first three months of the season, the team struggled in July (notably after acquring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox). This has dropped them to 59-62, 5 games back of the New York Mets for the 3rd Wild Card spot. The Giants are not a bad team and have a roster filled with solid players. Matt Chapman has 3 fWAR, and is hitting .229/.337/.423 with 16 HR, registering a 118 wRC+ while being among the top defensive third baseman in baseball. Patrick Bailey leads all catchers with 15 DRS and 16 FRV; but he is among the worst hitters in the game (65 wRC+), despite this, he has 2.2 fWAR. Then there is Willy Adames. The former Rays shortstop is in the first year of a $182M contract that he signed this past offseason. After struggling early on, Adames has found his footing in San Francisco; if you ignore his first two weeks, he has been an above average offensive player. Overall, Adames is hitting .223/.309/.393 with 18 HR, registering a 99 wRC+ and accruing 2.3 fWAR over 120 games. Rafael Devers has been a solid offensive player for the Giants, but his defense is still a major detriment to his game. On the pitching side, Logan Webb should receive some Cy Young votes while Robbie Ray has bounced back following a couple of tough years. Randy Rodriguez is one of the top relievers in baseball.
