Search continues for missing Turkiye national off Pulau Yu

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Search And Rescue (SAR) operation for another Turkiye national, Eser Demirkol, who went missing after the yacht Daisy capsized in the waters off Pulau Yu here, entered its third day today.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime Malaysia) Terengganu said in a statement today that the current search is focused on a sector covering 73.5 square nautical miles.
The statement also noted that today's operation, which began at 7am, involved both aerial and sea assets belonging to Maritime Malaysia and the Marine Police.
"In addition, Maritime Malaysia divers are expected to carry out dives today," the statement added.
Earlier, three Turkiye men — yacht captain Ahmet Volkan Ata, 52, Ates Demiroren, 42, and Demirkol, 52 — had embarked on a sailing expedition to return to their home country on Monday (July 28).
However, on Tuesday evening (July 29), the yacht was reportedly hit by a storm and capsized in the waters near Pulau Yu.
Demiroren was rescued by local fishermen at noon on Thursday, while Volkan Ata was found safe later that same night by another local fishing boat after having swum for over 40 hours at sea. — BERNAMA

Malaysia resumes search for missing Turkish sailor after yacht sinks

PUTRAJAYA: The search for missing Turkish sailor Eser Demirkol has resumed after the Turkish Embassy formally requested assistance through Malaysia's Foreign Ministry. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah confirmed Demirkol was among three crew members aboard the yacht Daisy when it sank on July 31. The other two crew members, Ahmet Volkan Ata and Ates Demiroren, were found safe earlier in separate rescue efforts. The renewed search will concentrate on the area between the suspected sinking site and where the second survivor was located. MMEA will deploy sea and air assets to expand coverage and increase the chances of locating Demirkol. A previous seven-day search operation covered 457.61 nautical square miles but was suspended last Wednesday due to lack of leads. The operation involved MMEA vessels, STAR team divers, and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to scan the seabed. Authorities urge the public, particularly the maritime community, to report any sightings or information via the 999 emergency line or Putrajaya MRCC at 03-8941 3140. The three Turkish nationals had embarked on a voyage from Malaysia to Turkey on July 28 before encountering a storm near Pulau Yu. Demiroren was rescued by local fishermen, while Ata was found 43 hours later by another fishing vessel. The MMEA remains committed to locating Demirkol and has called for public cooperation in the ongoing search. - Bernama

Malaysia resumes search for missing Turkish sailor after yacht sinks

PUTRAJAYA: The search for a missing Turkish crew member of the sailing yacht Daisy, lost in waters off Pulau Yu, Terengganu, has resumed following an official request from the Turkish Embassy through the Foreign Ministry on Friday (Aug 8). Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director-general Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the missing crewman, Eser Demirkol, was one of three on board when the yacht sank on July 31. The other two crew members have since been found. He said the latest operation would focus on the area between the suspected sinking location and where the second crew member was found, using MMEA sea and air assets to maximise search coverage. Earlier, a seven-day search-and-rescue (SAR) operation covering 457.61 nautical square miles involved MMEA sea and air assets, divers from the Special Task and Rescue (STAR) team, and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). It was called off on Wednesday (Aug 6) after no new leads were found. The public, especially the maritime community, is urged to contact the 999-emergency line or the Putrajaya Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at 03-8941 3140, which operates 24 hours, if they have any information on the missing man. Media reports earlier said the three Turkish nationals comprising yacht captain Ahmet Volkan Ata, 52, Ates Demiroren, 42, and Demirkol, 52, had planned to sail from Malaysia to their homeland on July 28 as part of a round-the-continent voyage. On the afternoon of July 29, the yacht was caught in a storm and believed to have sunk near Pulau Yu. Demiroren was rescued by local fishermen while adrift at sea, while Ata was found safe nearly 43 hours later by another fishing boat. – Bernama
