Florida football could soar past preseason projected win totals for 2025 campaign
Florida football exceeded expectations in 2024 by snapping a three-season sub-.500 streak with an 8-5 finish that included its first bowl game win since 2019. This all came against one of the toughest schedules among all FBS schools.
The Gators once again face a brutal gauntlet of games that will be hard, if not harder than what they battled through last fall. However, unlike years past, the national sports media is beginning to show some confidence in Billy Napier's rebuilding of UF's gridiron gang.
CBS Sports writer Brad Crawford put together a list featuring one team from each major conference that he expects to exceed preseason win expectations. His choice for the Southeastern Conference was the Orange and Blue, which is projected for a 7.5-win season (per FanDuel) in 2025.
Key factor: Surviving a treacherous first-half slate that includes three preseason top-10 opponents
"Oddsmakers haven't had enough of the DJ Lagway hype, yet? It would grow exponentially in the coming months if the Gators are a surprise challenger near the top of the SEC," Crawford begins.
"One of the nation's hottest quarterbacks to finish the 2024 season, Lagway played an integral role in Gators wins over LSU, Ole Miss and Tulane to end the campaign. And when taking into account some of the impact skill players Florida signed in its 2025 class, Billy Napier's fourth roster in Gainesville should be his best when paired with four returning offensive linemen," he continues.
"Shemar James, Jason Marshall, Des Watson and Jack Pyburn are the only noticeable losses in the starting lineup defensively for new coordinator Vinnie Sunseri, a former safety at Alabama tasked with fixing issues on the back end. Sunseri should be able to get the most out of Florida's depth in the secondary, an area that previously held the team back. It's easy to identify why many outlets have Florida comfortably inside the top 25. This win total seems low for a team with lofty expectations," Crawford concludes.

Hooters abruptly closes dozens of restaurants

Hooters has abruptly closed dozens of locations just a few months after the chicken wing chain filed for bankruptcy and proclaimed it wasn't 'going anywhere.' 'After careful consideration of what is needed to best position our company for the future, Hooters made the difficult decision to close certain company-owned locations,' a company spokesperson said in a statement to CNN. A specific list of closures wasn't released, but local reports reveal that about 30 locations were affected including several in Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. The company said that it's 'here to stay, and by optimizing our business in support of our long-term goals, Hooters will be well-positioned to continue our iconic legacy under a pure franchise business model.' The 42-year-old chain, best known for its orange-clad, all-female wait staff, filed for bankruptcy in March. Hooters is selling all of its 100 company-owned restaurants to two franchisee groups that operate Hooters locations in the Tampa, Florida, and Chicago areas. However, the closures aren't a complete surprise since the chain said it was 'evaluating the company's operational footprint' for its company-owned locations, which would result in a reduction of its footprint. Hooters also closed dozens of locations prior to bankruptcy in early 2024. Hooters' changes follow the closures of 15 locations of Bahama Breeze, a restaurant chain owned by Darden Restaurants. These chains typically cater to lower and middle-income families looking for a sit-down meal, but diners are abandoning these companies as their disposable income shrinks because of inflation. Consumer sentiment has been free-falling in recent months, and in May remained at a near-record low, according to the University of Michigan's closely watched indicator of how people are feeling about the economy. Closing 'poorly performing units can be better for the chain overall than trying to fix them' because pouring resources into rescuing the those locations can 'undermine the entire chain,' according to Maeve Webster, president of consulting firm Menu Matters. 'It's similar to rationalizing a menu: Better to eliminate items that aren't selling or rarely selling to improve the quality and consistency of what remains,' she recently told CNN. TGI Fridays, which aims to exit bankruptcy this summer, has also gradually closed locations while it navigates Chapter 11. The chain recently relaunched its menu for its remaining 85 US locations in hopes of sparking people's attention .

Freshman on fire: Texas A&M wideout impressing with rapid growth in offseason

Freshman on fire: Texas A&M wideout impressing with rapid growth in offseason According to Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, one freshman wideout in particular is impressing the coaching staff with his dedication to honing his craft and rapid growth during the offseason. Ashton Bethel-Roman is turning heads with his electric speed and determination to improve all aspects of his game. Via The Stateman's Tony Catalina, the Aggies' second-year head coach Mike Elko commented on the freshman's performance in the weight room and on the gridiron heading into the 2025 season. The unanimous four-star prospect from Missouri City, Texas, ranked as the No. 207 player in the country in ESPN's top 300 players. As a senior at Ridge Point High School in 2023, he caught 97 passes for 1,997 yards and 17 touchdowns, while also averaging 21.7 yards per punt return. His wheels and break-open speed is also a result of a deep-rooted passion for track and field, in which Bethel-Roman recorded a personal best of 21.51 in the 200m and 23-3 long jump mark during his senior year. He committed and signed the letter of intent to attend Texas A&M on February 7, 2024. Elko and company allowed the speedy track star to get his cleats dirty in four games last season, including a 38-3 victory over New Mexico State in which Bethel-Roman hauled in 35 receiving yards and his first-career touchdown. The former Ridge Point all-district first-team wideout was allowed to keep his redshirt last season since he only appeared in four contests, according to NCAA rules. Heading into the 2025 campaign, Bethel-Roman will give sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed another target in a depth-filled wide receiving corps. As he continues to develop in Elko's system, the Aggie wideout has the opportunity to hone his craft and improve as the season goes along. If Texas A&M wants to have success this year and in the next few years, especially in the day and age of the ever-changing transfer portal and NIL era of college football, keeping players like Bethel-Roman around the program will be integral moving forward. Bethel-Roman's pursuit of muscle mass and weight gain, combined with his lightning-quick speed, could propel him up the Texas A&M depth chart sooner rather than later.
