Egypt to see investments pour in once reforms implemented
"Now is an ideal time for reforms in Egypt. The world is looking at Egypt due to its stability and market trust," Diop told Ahram Online in an interview on the margins of the "Development Finance for Private Sector Empowerment: Economic Growth and Employment" conference, organized by the Ministry of Planning on Monday.
"Once reforms aimed at simplifying processes and creating a level playing field are implemented, investments are expected to pour in," Diop added, noting that the IFC is committed to supporting Egypt's efforts towards a decisive transition to private sector-led economy.
Asserting the IFC's support for Egypt's efforts in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector, Diop said this support is largely through banking solutions such as providing special credit lines.
'The IFC is now working with non-banking financial institutions to reach more MSMEs and provide easier access to finance, which is a new direction in their strategy,' he said.
'Since 2020, IFC has committed more than $850 million to MSMEs in Egypt through both financial and non-financial banking institutions, including equity. It focused on those led by women, helping them build businesses that foster innovation and strengthen communities,' Diop added.
As for the tourism industry, Diop said this sector is poised to play a crucial role in Egypt's economic recovery, offering substantial potential for diversification and growth.
'Egypt can tap into new visitor demographics by broadening its attractions to include cultural and health tourism and creating more sustainable revenue streams,' he added.
"The IFC is actively engaging with tourism projects to upgrade infrastructure and implement sustainable practices, such as the EDGE Advanced Green Building Certification for the Grand Egyptian Museum,' Diop said.
Diop also emphasized the IFC's keenness to empower Egyptian firms to leverage their capabilities and expand their operations across the continent, particularly in the construction and infrastructure sectors.
'By building capacity and instilling best practices, we can position Egyptian companies to engage successfully in pan-African projects,' Diop said.
'This not only bolsters their growth prospects but also fosters regional collaboration and integration, ultimately advancing economic development across Africa,' he added.
'By facilitating partnerships and knowledge transfer, the IFC aims to create a robust ecosystem where Egyptian enterprises can thrive and contribute to the collective growth and prosperity of the continent," he noted.
As for the healthcare industry, Diop said Egypt holds immense potential for growth, highlighting IFC plans to enhance collaboration with private healthcare providers to improve service delivery, accessibility, and affordability.
'We support investments in health infrastructure, medical technology, and healthcare professionals' training,' Diop said. (MENA)

Egypt, Côte d'Ivoire hold political talks, sign visa deal in Cairo
Egypt and Côte d'Ivoire held the third round of political consultations in Cairo on Monday, signing a visa waiver agreement for official passport holders and agreeing to deepen cooperation on a range of political, economic and security issues. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty received his Ivorian counterpart, Léon Kacou Adom, for the talks, which also covered regional developments of mutual interest. Abdelatty praised the development in Egyptian-Ivorian relations, reflected in an increased pace of high-level visits and regular meetings between officials. He noted the success of the second round of political consultations last October, which resulted in an agreement to elevate the talks to the ministerial level. The ministers reviewed opportunities for cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, livestock and fisheries, infrastructure, mining, health, transport, civil aviation and education. Abdelatty highlighted the capabilities and experience of Egyptian companies in supporting development projects in Africa, including the construction of roads and bridges and the localisation of pharmaceutical industries. In the area of capacity building, Abdelatty stressed Egypt's readiness to support Côte d'Ivoire in establishing a diplomatic studies institute. He also underscored Egypt's commitment to intensifying cooperation to support the counter-terrorism capabilities of West African nations, consistent with Egypt's comprehensive approach to combating terrorism through security, political, economic, social and ideological means. He pointed to Egypt's experience and tools, including field training programmes for armed forces and police, missions from Al-Azhar, and peace and development programmes through the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding. The Egyptian foreign minister emphasised the great importance Egypt attaches to achieving security and stability in the Sahel and West Africa, given the impact of instability on the region and on Egypt's national security. The talks also addressed developments in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, and ways to establish peace and security on the African continent. The Ivorian foreign minister praised Egypt's pivotal role in supporting the capacity building of countries in West Africa and the Sahel, as well as its efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. The two ministers agreed to continue coordination in bilateral and multilateral frameworks, including the exchange of support for candidacies in regional and international forums. In this context, Abdelatty valued Côte d'Ivoire's support for the candidacy of Dr. Khaled El-Enany for the post of Director-General of UNESCO. Egypt confirmed its support for the Ivorian candidate for the position of Deputy Director-General of the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union. The two sides also agreed on the importance of holding business forums alongside political consultations as a key part of efforts to boost economic and trade relations. It was agreed that the fourth round of political consultations will be held in Abidjan in 2026, at a date to be mutually determined.

Egypt to receive first train for Metro Line 4 in May 2026
Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, has met with the Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Fumio Iwai, to review the progress of joint projects and discuss future cooperation in the transport and industrial sectors. At the outset of the meeting, Al-Wazir expressed his appreciation for the successful collaboration between Egypt and Japan on various transport infrastructure projects. He emphasized the Egyptian government's commitment to expanding this cooperation, particularly in transport and industry, to support the country's ongoing development. Ambassador Iwai echoed Al-Wazir's sentiments, praising the productive partnership between the two nations. He specifically highlighted the successful implementation of phase one of Metro Line 4, a key project that underscores Japan's significant role in Egypt's transport sector. Iwai also noted the growing interest of Japanese companies in investing in Egypt, citing the country's favorable investment climate. The discussions also touched on expanding cooperation in the home appliance sector, particularly between Elaraby Group factories in Egypt and Japanese companies. Additionally, the two sides reviewed the impact of a protocol signed between Egypt's Productivity and Vocational Training Department and the Education Development Fund, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). A key focus of the meeting was the development of Metro Line 4, which is being implemented with the collaboration of Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation. Phase one of the project, which spans 19 kilometers from 6th of October City to Al-Fustat, will feature 17 stations. Mitsubishi is handling the electromechanical works, depot construction, and supplying the rolling stock. The first of the 23 trains for this phase is scheduled to arrive in Egypt in May 2026, with the remaining trains to follow according to a set timetable. Looking ahead, discussions also covered the feasibility study for phase two of Metro Line 4, which will extend 31.8 kilometers from Al-Fustat to New Cairo, connecting with Line 6, the East Nile Monorail, and major transport hubs. Future phases include Phase Three, which will stretch 16.3 kilometers to Hosary Square, and Phase Four, covering 38.7 kilometers to the Capital Airport, with connections to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) network. The continued partnership with Japan is expected to play a critical role in transforming Egypt's transport landscape, with Metro Line 4 serving as a cornerstone of the nation's urban mobility strategy.

Ethiopian Airlines, AfDB Sign $10bn Bishoftu Mega-Airport Deal to Boost Africa's Aviation Hub Ambitions
Ethiopian Airlines and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have signed a landmark $10 billion financing agreement to build a state-of-the-art international airport in Bishoftu, in what is being hailed as one of Africa's most ambitious aviation infrastructure projects. Under the agreement, signed on Monday in the Ethiopian capital, the AfDB will act as the lead arranger for financing. The Bishoftu project is a central pillar of the government's long-term economic development strategy, aimed at leveraging aviation to drive foreign investment and cross-continental connectivity.
