The stakes remain high with PONIES, a spy thriller series starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, where two "Ponies" ("persons of no interest" in intelligence speak) work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy. That is, until their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR and the pair become CIA operatives.
The symphony of hits continues with Amadeus, a new Sky limited series starring Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) and Paul Bettany (A Very British Scandal, WandaVision) that centers around 25-year-old Amadeus (Sharpe) eager to break free from his child prodigy past and controlling father, Amadeus arrives in 18th-century Vienna and meets the devoutly religious court composer, Antonio Salieri (Bettany). What begins as curiosity quickly spirals into a murderous obsession as Salieri recognizes the divine genius in Amadeus' music—music so transcendent it shakes Salieri's faith to its core.
Also, Ted, the live-action comedy based on the blockbuster film franchise is back for a second season with Seth MacFarlane reprising the voice of the iconic and lovable foul-mouthed teddy bear. The franchise is also expanding with Ted: The Animated Series (WT), a new animated comedy from MacFarlane that continues Ted's misadventures following the events of the films. Moe disappointed by Trump's tariffs but says Carney should remove countermeasures

SASKATOON - Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says Prime Minister Mark Carney should start removing counter tariffs against the United States to get a deal done with President Donald Trump. U.S Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has asked Ottawa to do away with countermeasures, and Moe says Canada should heed the advice. 'If we're serious about achieving a renewed, revamped and enhanced trade environment or some type of a new and improved (Canada-United States-Mexico trade agreement), somebody's going to have to move in this space,' Moe said Friday at a news conference. 'We would suggest that it should be Canada.' Trump followed through late Thursday on his threat to hit Canada with 35 per cent tariffs — up from 25 per cent — on goods not compliant with the trade agreement, better known as CUSMA. Tariffs of 50 per cent remain in effect on steel and some copper products, and levies on Canadian automobiles and lumber are also in place. Carney has imposed 25 per cent tariffs on $30 billion in U.S. goods. Moe said he's heard from farmers dinged by Canadian levies on steel bins, as it's importers pay those tariff charges. 'The reason we will be urging for a reduction of counter tariffs is they hurt Saskatchewan and Canadians, our families, our businesses and our places of work,' he said. '(It's) in the same way that Donald Trump's tariffs are pushing up the cost of doing business in the U.S. and really pushing them into a situation where the last two months running, their job numbers have been much more dismal than the projection.' Moe also called the jump in Trump's tariffs disappointing. He said he gives credit to Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc for ensuring exports compliant with CUSMA are tariff-free. Under the agreement, 95 per cent of Saskatchewan exports move into the United States without duties, Moe added. 'That is incredibly important,' the premier said. '(It) allows us largely to have an opportunity to create North American energy security, food security and manufacturing security.' U.S. Census Bureau data shows nearly 60 per cent of Canadian goods that entered the country in May were compliant with the agreement. Moe and other premiers have also called on Ottawa to cut regulations to spur pipeline and rail development. He said he's hopeful Carney's latest law to streamline approvals for national infrastructure projects will do just that. Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said the vast majority of her province's products remain tariff-free, because they also fall under the trade agreement. Smith said in a social media post it's unfortunate non-compliant goods will be hit with the higher tariffs. 'These tariffs hurt both Canadian and American businesses and workers, and they weaken one of the most important trade and security alliances in the world,' she said. 'I remain convinced that the path to a positive resolution with our U.S. partners lies in strong, consistent diplomacy and a commitment to working in good faith toward shared priorities.' Smith said Carney should continue negotiating with Trump, while working toward diversifying the country's economy. Both Moe and Smith recently reallowed U.S. liquor to be sold in their provinces, after temporarily banning such sales when the tariff war started earlier this year. Moe has said the 'elbows-up' approach in dealing with Trump is nothing more than a slogan. 'This is a time for us ... to make fact-based decisions, not to make decisions that maybe make us feel good, that we think are going to be good slogans or things of that nature,' he said Friday. Canada's US trade minister exits DC as tariff talks stall

'I would expect to talk to Sec. Lutnick on the phone next week,' LeBlanc told POLITICO Friday from the Canadian embassy in Washington. 'There's no meeting scheduled, but I exchanged text messages with him yesterday.' Despite Trump's increased tariff, LeBlanc, as well as Carney, noted the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement extends broad protection to most — but certainly not all — Canadian industries. 'The president's respect of the USMCA application puts Canada in a favorable position,' said LeBlanc, whose immediate priority is working with Carney to help Canadian workers affected by the tariffs. Trump's tariff hike still hits goods that are not covered by the USMCA. The Bank of Canada forecast this week that up to 95 percent of Canadian exports could qualify for exemptions under that agreement. Meanwhile, the share of Canadian companies claiming tariff exemptions has soared. Before boarding a flight back to his New Brunswick home, LeBlanc said that leaves 'Canada in a favorable position with respect to the overall tariff rate on our economy as compared to other trading partners.' LeBlanc was in Washington with Carney's chief of staff, Marc-André Blanchard, and Kirsten Hillman, Canada's U.S. envoy and chief negotiator, for the homestretch of talks ahead of Trump's self-imposed Aug. 1 trade deadline.

CNL and Partners Identified Three Canadian Locations to Advance the Design of Renewable Diesel Production Facilities

CHALK RIVER, Ontario, Aug. 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada's premier nuclear science and technology laboratory, in partnership with Expander Energy Inc. (Expander), Fuel Cell Energy (FCE), St Marys Cement (SMC), and Nuclear Promise X (NPX), are pleased to announce that they have identified three Canadian locations as potential sites for the location of renewable diesel production facilities. These facilities would be capable of converting wood waste feedstock into 90 million litres of 'drop-in ready' renewable diesel fuel per year, transforming a waste product into a valuable, low-carbon fuel for the transportation sector. This milestone follows the successful completion of a feasibility study, funded through Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan) Clean Fuels Fund, which demonstrated the economic viability of synthetic diesel production using biomass through water electrolysis. The concept, known as 'e-Syn', encompasses the use of water and water electrolysis as part of an innovative, patented and patent pending process for making bio-synthetic fuels developed by CNL and Expander, called the Biomass Electrolysis to Liquids (BETL™) technology. The project leverages Expander's technology for biomass gasification and bio-synthetic fuel production, and electrolysis technology. The resulting fuel (either bio-synthetic diesel, known as Bio-SynDiesel®, or bio-synthetic aviation fuel, known as Bio-SynJet®) will be comprised entirely of carbon sourced from biogenic (atmospheric) sources, and is expected to have very low life cycle carbon intensity. As part of the feasibility study, a number of potential sites in Canada were evaluated with the intent of selecting one site for a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase of the project. This process culminated in the selection of three locations at sites in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, all of which fulfill the necessary requirements in terms of proximity to utilities, and accessibility to major roads and key resources like biomass, among other factors. Following NRCan's approval, the feed study was extended from one to the three sites, a process that is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2025. 'CNL is thrilled at the results that were generated through the feasibility study and is ready to move into the next phase of the project, which has the potential to eventually produce economical, ready-to-deploy, renewable diesel fuel,' commented Stephen Bushby, CNL's Vice-President of Science and Technology. 'As Canada moves towards a net-zero future, synthetic transportation fuels provide an immediate opportunity for the country to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, with the additional benefit of leveraging waste, such as wood, that may otherwise go to waste. The transportation sector in Canada is responsible for almost 25 per cent of the country's total emissions, so this innovation has the potential to make an important impact toward decarbonizing that sector, as well as Canada's overall carbon footprint.' 'This is not a science experiment – the feasibility study showed that the BETL™ technology can efficiently produce bio-synthetic fuels at prices competitive with existing food competitive Hydrogenation-Derived Renewable Diesel (HDRD) and Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) fuels,' commented Gord Crawford, Expander's President and CEO. 'Preliminary economic assessments indicated strong financial performance for all three sites. For future opportunities to actually deploy this technology, Expander and CNL plan to install a commercially proven electrolyzer as part of the planned Expander Carseland Alberta Gasifier project in order to technically and commercially derisk potential investment in the three sites under development in the CFF program.' The engineering design work will be based on the utilization of 240 dry tonnes of forestry wood waste per day as feedstock to annually produce approximately 30 million liters of renewable diesel per processing facility by using the BETL™ technology. The design of these facilities could also serve as a template for future sites, both nationally and internationally, using a build, own and operate model. Site specific details will be announced in coordination with local partners, including government and Indigenous nations and organizations, in the near future. The relevance of this project is timely in Canada. While increasing the supply of low-carbon electricity, including nuclear generation and other renewable power options, will be critical to reaching Canada's net zero target, synthetic liquid fuels provide an immediate opportunity to decarbonize marine, aviation and other heavy duty transport sectors using existing engines. These clean fuels are 'drop in' ready, providing an attractive opportunity to decarbonize without the need to make major changes to engine design and manufacturing processes. Converting cellulosic biomass, such as lumber mill and forest residues, to synthetic diesel or sustainable aviation fuel, is also an attractive and promising method to produce fuel that complies with North America's ASTM D975 and Europe's CEN 15940 diesel specifications. Several investors, including major offtakers, have expressed interest in participating in any potential projects. About CNL As Canada's premier nuclear science and technology laboratory and working under the direction of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), CNL is a world leader in the development of innovative nuclear science and technology products and services. Guided by an ambitious corporate strategy known as Vision 2030, CNL fulfills three strategic priorities of national importance – restoring and protecting the environment, advancing clean energy technologies, and contributing to the health of Canadians.
