Speaking in the Senate, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman's Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) senator Kamran Murtaza painted a grim picture of the situation. He told the upper house that 'Balochistan has no internet since the last many days" and that the security climate has worsened to the point where local transport is unavailable after 5 pm. 'What's happening in Balochistan is not appropriate — from security to the basic need of electricity, the problems are getting worse day by day," Murtaza said. He further revealed that multiple areas had been declared 'no-go zones" due to threats from armed groups.
Top provincial bureaucrats have also reportedly alerted the federal government to the worsening environment, citing intelligence-based security threats as the reason for cancelling Independence Day celebrations in several major district headquarters. According to these officials, even local government and town offices in sensitive districts avoided hosting events on August 14 to prevent potential militant attacks.
The heightened security alert follows a series of deadly assaults on Pakistani security forces in the province. In one of the most significant recent incidents, Baloch separatist insurgents ambushed Pakistan Army vehicles in Washuk district earlier this week. At least nine soldiers, including a captain, were killed when gunmen opened fire on a military police van and a quick response force unit near Green Chowk in Basima. The attack also left several soldiers and civilians injured.
Balochistan has long grappled with a separatist insurgency, which has intensified in recent years despite repeated security operations. Militant groups often target security convoys, infrastructure, and government installations, accusing Islamabad of exploiting the province's natural resources while neglecting local development. The mounting attacks have prompted increased troop deployments and intelligence operations, but have also led to sweeping restrictions that critics say are suffocating normal civilian life.
Senator Murtaza's remarks in Parliament reflect growing political unease over the balance between security and civil liberties. With communications disrupted, public transport halted in the evenings, and celebrations curtailed, the people of Balochistan are facing a daily reality shaped by fear and uncertainty — a situation that lawmakers warn is eroding the writ of the state in the province.

City mustard oil mill preserves Gandhian ideals
1 2 Ranchi: A shop-cum-mustard oil mill in capital's bustling Main Road area, which might be easily overlooked due to its modest appearance, stands as a living testament to India's freedom movement. Shyam Kishor Sahu established Gramudyog Bhandar in 1938 in response to Mahatma Gandhi's call to revive small-scale industries and promote self-reliance. At a time when imported goods dominated Indian markets, the mill churned out mustard oil, becoming both a source of livelihood and a symbol of the Swadeshi movement. Shyam ran the shop for 61 years, until his death in 1999. Since then, Shyam's son Narayan Prasad Sahu has been running the shop. "In 1934, Gandhiji called for re-establishing small industries across the country so that Indians get an opportunity to earn their livelihood. He set up a mustard oil mill in Wardha as an example. Disciples of Gandhi, my parents stayed at his Wardha ashram for years. My father returned to Ranchi and established the mill in 1938. As India celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Friday, the shop stands tall as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and ideals that dreamt of a free nation," septuagenarian Narayan, who is a physician, said. A plaque bearing Gandhi's wishes adorns the walls of the shop. During his visit to present-day Jharkhand to attend the 1940 session of the Indian National Congress held in Ramgarh, Gandhi stopped by the store and penned on a piece of paper, 'Iss Bhandar ki unnati ho' (May this store prosper), a message that continues to echo the shop's golden past. Shyam was jailed several times by the British, but his commitment to serve the country remained undeterred. "The shop was never just about selling oil. My father used the profits to support the movement, funding meetings, rallies, and helping fellow freedom fighters. Steeped in history, our shop aims to uphold and nurture Gandhi's ideals. I strive to preserve my father's legacy without altering its essence. The only change is that where bulls once churned the oil, machines have taken their place," Narayan said. I-Day celebrated with patriotic fervour in state
1 2 Ranchi: Independence Day was celebrated with fervour all over the state on Friday. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar unfurled the national flag at Morhabadi ground in Ranchi even as numerous functions were held by political parties, administration, judiciary, social organizations, schools and other institutions. Meanwhile, police were on the vigil, particularly in extremist-sensitive areas of the state, to prevent untoward incidents. A central reserve police force official stated, "Our personnel along with state police were carrying operations all over the state even though in many parts extremism has been eradicated." Addressing the I-day function, Gangwar said, "Jharkhand is a land of opportunities in fields of investment infrastructure, energy, innovation, education, health and sports. There is immense scope for tourism in the state. The number of foreign and domestic tourists has risen, which in turn has created employment opportunities." He stated that multi-faceted efforts are underway to improve livelihood of farmers adding solar- powered pump sets are being distributed at 90% subsidy while loans of around five lakh farmers, amounting to Rs 2,300 crore, have been waived off to provide them financial help. He stated that fishery is being specially promoted to increase farmer's income and provide employment to youths. Governor stated, "Unemployment is cause of several problems. The state govt is making efforts to reduce joblessness and stop immigration of people to other states for jobs. Vacant government posts are being filled up while youths are being trained and skilled to increase their employment opportunities." He said that Mukhyamatri Digital Health Yojna would be implemented in the next five years with the aim to modernize medical facilities from primary health centres to the medical colleges. He stated that a central radiology hub has been approved at district hospital Ranchi for X Ray, CT Scan, MRI and other services. Governor stated that improved law and order is necessary for development of any state adding it has been achieved with help of the society. He stated that this year 197 extremists were arrested while 10 surrendered before the police. He said that strict actions are being taken against terrorist activities, land mafias, illegal tree cutting and mining and organized crimes. He stated that education is basis of development adding that emphasis is being given on training of teachers as per needs of National Education Policy. He said that cycles are being distributed to stop drop out among scheduled tribes, scheduled castes, backward castes and the minorities. The Jharkhand Student Research and Innovation Policy is being implemented to promote innovation, he said. The Governor stated that a plan to establish 'gyan kendra' with library, computer , internet and competitive examination books in 2500 gram panchayats in under implementation in order to strengthen gram swaraj. Taking part in I-day function at Vidhan Sabha speaker Rabindranath Mahto stated, " We have to ensure that development is not limited to the towns. The campaigns related to farmers, tribals, small industries, women self-employment, education and health must reach every village." In a function held at police headquarter DGP Anuraag Gupta stated that during the first six months of the year police have arrested 12 members of organized crime groups, five of terrorists organization Hizb-ut-Tahirir, 484 accused of illegal drug sales and purchase cases and more than 700 cyber criminals. 1 2 Nagpur: In a remarkable display of transformation and patriotism, surrendered People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) commander Giridhar Tumreti, who once burnt the tricolour and hoisted black flags, returned to his native village of Jhaveli Khurd to celebrate India's 79th Independence Day on Friday. For the first time since his surrender in June 2024, Giridhar participated in a flag-hoisting ceremony at the gram panchayat office and a local zilla parishad school, singing the national anthem alongside villagers. Giridhar's presence symbolised a powerful message of reintegration into mainstream society, said SP Gadchiroli Neelotpal. Giridhar, who once led seven Maoist dalams (formations) in Gadchiroli for nearly three decades, was a key figure in the Maoist movement, with 185 cases lodged against him for offences against the state. Till last year, Gadchiroli police countered Maoist attempts to hoist black flags in remote villages, including Mardhur, Nelgunda, and Kawande. Sub-divisional police officer Amar Mohite led a team to Mardhur, ensuring the tricolour was raised with pride. Across Gadchiroli, rallies with school students, anti-drug awareness campaigns, and processions with the tricolour were organised to promote patriotism and community engagement. A grand Tiranga Bike Rally was inaugurated by state minister and co-guardian minister of Gadchiroli, Ashish Jaiswal, who flagged off the event with a green flag.
