Heidenheim recover to draw with Elversberg in Bundesliga playoff

France 2422-05-2025

Elversberg, who have never played in the top flight and are in just their second Bundesliga 2 campaign, ran out to a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals from Lukas Petkov and Fisnik Asllani.
Heidenheim fought their way back into the match and the tie with two goals in four second-half minutes through Tim Siersleben and Mathias Honsak.
"A brutal game," Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt told Sky Germany.
"We're in a good situation to go to Elversberg next week. Everything is open for the return leg."
Elversberg coach Horst Steffen was not too discouraged despite watching his team surrender a two-goal lead.
"At the end it's alright, we wanted to avoid defeat. We'll have to get it done at home," said Steffen.
The winners of the playoff, between the side third last in the Bundesliga and the third-placed Bundesliga 2 team, will play in the top flight next season.
Elversberg, from a town of just 13,000 people, are bidding to become the smallest club to play in the top flight. They took the lead after 18 minutes when Petkov finished off a fluid team move.
Asllani doubled the visitors' advantage just before half-time, cutting the ball in from just inside the box.
Heidenheim reacted by bringing Bayern loanee Paul Wanner, who spent last season on loan at Elversberg, off the bench for the second half.
Siersleben gave Heidenheim hope when he tapped in a rebound from a Leo Scienza free-kick on 62 minutes.
Wanner then linked up with Scienza whose low shot was saved but bounced into the path of Honsak. He tapped home to give his side hope ahead of Monday's second leg in Elversberg.
Since the Bundesliga playoff was reintroduced at the end of the 2008-09 campaign, the top-flight team has won over two legs in 13 of 16 seasons.
The most recent second-division side to win promotion via the playoff was Union Berlin, who came through on away goals against Stuttgart in 2019.

Liverpool keeper Kelleher set to join Brentford: reports

Kelleher was backup to Liverpool's first-choice keeper Alisson Becker during their Premier League title-winning campaign this season. Although the Ireland international featured 10 times in the league when Alisson was injured, he was keen to leave Anfield in search of regular first-team action. Brentford have agreed a reported initial fee of £12.5 million for Kelleher that can rise to £18 million if performance-related requirements are met. Kelleher, who has a year left on his Liverpool contract, also attracted interest from Leeds, West Ham and Bournemouth. He was the hero of Liverpool's 2022 League Cup final triumph against Chelsea, making several fines saves and scoring a penalty in the 11-10 shoot-out victory. Kelleher also started Liverpool's 2024 League Cup final win against Chelsea. The 26-year-old will be replaced at Anfield by Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili. Mamardashvili will join up with Arne Slot's side in time for next season after the Georgian agreed his move to the Reds last year. Kelleher's imminent switch to west London comes with Brentford keeper Mark Flekken set to join Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in a £9 million deal.

Leverkusen confirm Liverpool interest in Wirtz

At a press conference announcing former Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag will take over as manager after Xabi Alonso's departure for Real Madrid, Rolfes said Liverpool were chasing Wirtz but a deal was not yet done. "He's our player... No question there's a lot of interest," Rolfes said. "It's an open topic with Florian, we'll see. "That there's concrete interest from Liverpool, that's clear, but there's nothing more to say at the moment." Liverpool have been linked with a big-money move for the 22-year-old, who recently visited Merseyside. Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro previously said he would not let Wirtz leave for less than 150 million euros (125 million pounds, $170 million), which would make him Liverpool's record signing and among the most expensive players of all time. Bayern Munich were also in hot pursuit of the midfielder but German media reported that Wirtz has his sights set on Liverpool. Sitting alongside Rolfes, Ten Hag praised the midfielder but would not reveal whether he would get the chance to manage him next season. "He's definitely a great player and I've watched him with great pleasure in the past few years and followed his development. I'm very happy he plays for Leverkusen and I'm happy for him and his development. "In professional football you never know until the first of September." A hyped junior talent, Wirtz joined Leverkusen from local rivals Cologne in the summer of 2020. The midfielder was crucial as Leverkusen broke through to win their first league title in 2023-24, with Wirtz named Bundesliga player of the season.

Mbappe adds a little lustre to Real season with Golden Shoe

Mbappe scored twice in Real Madrid's final league game on Saturday to overtake Viktor Gyokeres, whose league season at Sporting Lisbon ended the previous week, at the top of the weighted table which counts only league goals. Mbappe ended with 31 league goals as he became the third Real Madrid player to win the award, after Mexicans Hugo Sanchez (1989-1990) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2010-2011, 2013-2014, 2014-2015). The last Frenchman to collect the Golden Shoe was Thierry Henry, who won it in 2004 and 2005 with Arsenal. Mbappe could have been caught on Sunday, while he was in Monaco watching the Formula One Grand Prix. Mohammed Salah, who needed a hat-trick in English champions Liverpool's last league game, scored once to finish third with 29 goals. Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski, already certain to finish ahead of Real Madrid in the race for the Spanish league title, scored twice at Bilbao. He totalled 27 goals, for fourth place in Europe and second in the Pichichi, the award for the top scorer in La Liga. The Pole won the Golden Shoe twice with Bayern and claimed the Pichichi in 2023. Last year's Golden Shoe winner, Harry Kane, finished fifth with 26 Bundesliga goals to go with his league champion's medal at Bayern Munich. Mateo Retegui, with 25 for Atalanta, was the top Serie A player, in sixth place. Gyokeres out-scored Mbappe with 39 goals, but the table is weighted. Each goal in the 'big five' European competitions -- La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A -- is doubled. For the next 16 ranked leagues, goals are multiplied by 1.5. Below that a goal is just a goal. Estonian Alex Tamm totalled 34 league goals, spread over two seasons but finished only 27th. He hit 28 for Kalju in his native Estonia, which plays a summer season, and six more after moving to Olimpija Ljubljana in Slovenia in Februray. Gyokeres did score on Sunday as Sporting lost the Portuguese cup final 3-1 to Benfica to finish the season with 53 goals in 51 games in all competitions. Mbappe, the top scorer in the 2022 World Cup, hit 43 in all competitions for Real this season.
