Indigenous man who died in police custody was a dedicated educator
A Wadeye man who died after police prevented him from boarding a flight was a senior Wadeye Elder who lobbied for bilingual schooling and better education funding for his community. A death-in-custody investigation is under way after federal police stopped the 68-year-old from joining a flight out of Darwin on May 30, on reports he was intoxicated.
He was taken into "protective custody" but on arrival at Royal Darwin Hospital he was found to be unconscious, prompting medical staff to commence CPR, with resuscitation efforts proving successful. He was transferred to the intensive care unit for ongoing treatment for a suspected medical event but died there on Saturday. "The cause of the man's death remains undetermined pending a postmortem," Northern Territory police have said. "The incident is being investigated as a death in custody as the man was in the custody of the AFP at the time of him first losing consciousness."
The AFP has said the man was not arrested and was "not restrained at any point by AFP officers". Aboriginal leaders from the Top End's Daly region have expressed their communities' grief over the loss of the Elder. Thamarrurr Development Corporation representing Wangga, Lirrga, Wulthirri and Tharnpa peoples confirmed in a statement he was a "much loved and respected senior man, who was a mentor to us all". "A great visionary and educator, a campaigner for a better life for his community and a respected leader, he will be greatly missed."
TN was a champion for bilingual education and had produced children's books in local tribal language. In 2007 he took part in a racial discrimination action in the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission arguing Wadeye children received less than half the school funding received by other NT children. Then-federal education minister Peter Garrett announced the community would get a $7.7 million funding package in exchange for dropping its complaint . Northern Land Council chair Matthew Ryan said TN, who had been a council member, was a "quiet achiever" whose legacy would live on. "My heart goes out to his loved ones and all mob across the Wadeye and Darwin Daly regions." Opposition leader Selena Uibo said TN's loss would be "be felt deeply across the territory". "He was a respected and strong leader - valued for the guidance he provided to those he worked alongside and the outcomes he helped deliver for his community," Ms Uibo said. NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said her government recognised the "pain and grief being felt" and her thoughts were with the man's family and loved ones.
Catholic Bishop of Darwin Charles Gauci said he had known the Elder for many years and he was "deeply saddened at his death". "I was able to accompany him on the last day of his life, I was in the hospital with his wife and family and to pray with him and to be there with them, walking with them at this very significant time," he told the ABC. "He believed in education as empowerment and he was an educator for many years himself. "He was co-principal at the school at Wadeye and really contributed deeply and widely there for the education of young people." NT Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Police attended 287 major crashes across the weekend, that saw 75 people injured and 3 people die. Police pursued one male driver aged 31 in a stolen 4WD who allegedly drove through multiple wire fences on a private property in Dunedoo before he was later spotted by Polair, arrested and charged. Another 27-year old man allegedly took police on a pursuit for 190km through the Hunter Region before he was stopped by road spikes on the New England Highway in Wittingham. 'Over the past few days of the Kings birthday long weekend, we have seen three people lose their lives and 75 people injured on our roads,' he said. 'Motor vehicle crashes are preventable, however when they occur lives can be lost, and others permanently changed. 'I want to really reiterate the message that driving is a high-risk activity, and all road users need to drive their vehicle with care and attention, and importantly adhere to the road rules.' Almost 400 mobile phone infringements were issued to drivers as well as 221 seatbelt infringements and 6,665 infringements for other offences.

Lidia Thorpe claims NT Chief Minister ‘complicit' in genocide amid ire over deaths in custody
Independent senator Lidia Thorpe has accused the Northern Territory's chief minister of being 'complicit in the ongoing genocide' of Indigenous Australians. The claim came after two men recently died in police custody in the Top End, sparking ire across the country. Senator Thorpe said on Tuesday 'there's no trust in the Northern Territory Police Force'. 'We know that they have systemic racism,' she told the ABC. 'We know through the Kumanjayi Walker inquest that the Northern Territory Police are racist, so families do not trust the Northern Territory Police and we need federal leadership. 'We need the feds to step in here.' There have been calls, including from Indigenous Affairs Minister Malindiri McCarthy, for an external review of deaths in NT Police custody. But Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has pushed back, instead saying she trusted the Territory's police to review itself. 'I think that shows how out of touch the Northern Territory Chief Minister is and that she is complicit in the ongoing genocide against our people,' Senator Thorpe said. Pressed on what grounds she was making the claim, Senator Thorpe said Ms Finocchiaro was playing a role in the system that causing 'ongoing harm of our people'. 'The definition of genocide, according to the Geneva Convention, is causing harm to a group of people,' she said. 'The ongoing killings of our people in custody is ongoing harm of our people. 'The incarceration rates of our people, particularly in the Northern Territory, particularly of our children, is an act of genocide. 'The stealing of children and putting them in with white families is an act of genocide. 'So we meet all the definitions of genocide and I've certainly seen that over my time.'
