PM, Deputy Speaker of Parliament: It is important to secure the preparations for holding the elections
PM Muhammed S. Al-Sudani met on Monday with the First Deputy Speaker of the Council of the Parliament, Mohsen Ali Al-Mandalawi.
The meeting included a review of the overall situation in the country and recent regional developments, with emphasis on the importance of unifying efforts and positions in light of the ongoing challenges and crises in the region, according to a statement by the PM Media Office - received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
They discussed the covered ways to enhance cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to pass legislation that supports the government's service-oriented and development-focused program.
Both emphasized the need to ensure the necessary preparations and requirements for holding the upcoming parliamentary elections on schedule, while encouraging broad public participation to ensure the results genuinely reflect the will and choices of the Iraqi people in electing their representatives.

Baghdad hails peace deal Turkey reached with PKK
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, hailed on Saturday the peace agreement Turkey reached recently with the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK). Al-Sudani's remarks took place during a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in which they discussed ties between the two countries, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The Iraqi prime minister confirmed that the peace agreement will help the region by promoting stability and development for its people. Last May, the PKK announced its intention to disband and to cease military activities, bringing an end to four decades of conflict. The step took place after PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999, urged the party in February to formally dissolve and start disarmament. After starting the process of handing over its weapons during a ceremony held in the northern Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah on Friday, the PKK said in a statement that the party handed over its weapons voluntarily in response to the adoption of legislation for democratic integration. Turkey, the United States, and the European Union have all designated the PKK, which has fought for decades, as a terrorist group. The party's decision to disband is an important milestone in regional geopolitics and could ease long-standing tensions, notably in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, where PKK members remain.

EU appoints New Head of Mission in Iraq
By John Lee. The Council of the European Union has appointed Ralf Schröder (pictured) as the new head of mission for the European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq). He will take up his duties on 16th August 2025. According to a statement: Ralf Schröder is a high-ranked German police officer with 30 years of experience in the security sector, specialised in counterterrorism. He has also served in different international positions -e.g. in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was head of the Embassy Security Team - and in international missions: UNMIS and UNSOM. Since November 2024, Ralf Schroeder serves in EUAM Iraq as Deputy Head of Mission. The decision was taken by the Political and Security Committee on 8 July 2025. EUAM Iraq was launched in October 2017 in response to a request by the Iraqi government for advice on how to undertake civilian security sector reform. The civilian mission, headquartered in Baghdad and with an office in Erbil, had an initial mandate of one year which was regularly extended, following the assessment of Iraqi needs. The mission's overarching task is to assist in the development and coherent implementation of the Iraqi National Security Strategy, associated national strategies and other national security priorities. This process, supported by several international partners, involves inter alia support to institutional reform, anti-organised crime, anti-corruption, protection of cultural heritage, Integrated Border Management and counter-terrorism. EUAM Iraq is mandated to advise officials of the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Interior and other relevant authorities in charge of civilian related aspects of security sector reform. The mission can conduct visits at regional and provincial levels in support of Iraqi efforts to strengthen countrywide coordination as it relates to civilian security sector reform. Erbil initially agreed to receive 46,000 barrels of oil per day for internal consumption, but 'the Region is now requesting it be 65,000, thus violating the budget law,' Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani told Iraqi state media. Kurdistan Region's oil exports have been suspended since 2023. Erbil and Baghdad have had multiple rounds of negotiations to hammer out an agreement that would see the exports resume via the pipeline through Turkey. 'Almost all clauses have been agreed upon except this one, and we hope that in the final stages the Region will accept the quantity that was agreed upon between the federal and regional financial audit bureaus in order to implement the agreement,' Ghani said. Under the Iraqi budget, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is required to hand over 400,000 barrels per day to the federal government's State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO). Ghani said the federal government has informed both Turkish and Kurdish sides of its readiness to resume exports via the Iraq-Turkey pipeline, adding that 'Turkey is ready,' but Baghdad is still 'waiting for our brothers in the Region to deliver this quantity of oil.' He noted that Iraq is currently losing around 300,000 barrels per day, as the Region's production is counted within the country's OPEC quota 'despite the federal government not benefiting from it.' The halt in exports and disputes with Baghdad have put an enormous financial strain on the KRG, which has lost more than $25 billion in oil revenues. Erbil is not able to pay its civil servants and is dependent on funds from Baghdad. In May, Iraq's federal finance ministry halted all budget transfers to the KRG, including payments for public employee salaries, claiming the KRG had exceeded its share of federal budget funds and failed to deliver its oil to SOMO. Public sector workers have not been paid since. Dilshad Mawani, an oil and gas expert, told Rudaw on Saturday that an escrow account could be a viable option in this situation. An escrow is a financial arrangement in which a neutral third party holds funds or assets on behalf of two parties until predetermined conditions of a contract are fulfilled. 'Escrow accounts… can be an option so that operations or investment don't stop… when there is no political agreement or… no important political decision or a decision from a court to resolve one of the matters,' he said.
