Celebrity chef learns his fate after violent assault on influencer girlfriend during Airbnb getaway

Daily Mail4 days ago
A celebrity chef who punched and shoved his girlfriend to the ground has escaped jail, despite a magistrate finding he could have walked away from the situation.
On Monday, Magistrate Justin Wickens told Leonardo Moreira Loureiro, former head chef at acclaimed Adelaide restaurant Nina, that he had been in a position of physical dominance over his partner, food influencer Brenda Loveday.
The Brazilian-born 33-year-old and Ms Loveday had been out to dinner with friends in July 2024, when an argument erupted at their Airbnb.
'You were in a position of dominance as it relates to physical strength in comparison to (Ms Loveday),' Mr Wickens said, according to the The Advertiser.
'You could have used that imbalance to push past her, to move her to the side, or to take some other form of action to remove yourself from the situation you clearly did not want to be in.
'You did not need to push her to the floor, you did not need to punch her.'
Inside a shared bedroom, Loureiro pushed Ms Loveday to the ground, causing her to hit her head, and punched her in the abdomen after she tried to calm him.
'I accept that your actions on this evening were born out of frustration at the situation. Frustration may be a precursor, but is never an excuse to resort to violence,' Mr Wickens said.
Ms Loveday told the court Loureiro had 'tried to destroy her' and 'stripped away' the person she once was.
She said the abuse went beyond physical violence, alleging he had cut her off from friends, the same friends who ultimately 'saved' her by contacting SA Police.
After the assault, Ms Loveday said Loureiro made a chilling remark.
'Damn, I thought you were dead, you are such a good actress,' she said he told her, before filming her 'to humiliate me and make me look unstable.'
Nine months later, in April this year, Loureiro pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault without a weapon.
A second charge of choking, suffocating or strangling was withdrawn by prosecutors.
Following his guilty plea, he left his role at Nina restaurant, while Ms Loveday received widespread public support from fellow social media
The chef was sentenced to one month and six days in prison, reduced by 24 days to account for time served in custody after his arrest.
The term was suspended on a $500, 12-month good behaviour bond due to his 'immediate' remorse and efforts to seek psychological help.
Nina, which was co-founded by Loureiro, Loveday and Jessica Purcell, is now run solely by Ms Purcell.
'Recent events involving a former co-founder of Niña have understandably drawn public attention,' Ms Purcell said in May.
'I want to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, whilst also affirming my commitment to the team, our guests, and the values we uphold at Niña.'
Loureiro is a well-known chef who has worked alongside several high-profile culinary figures, including Matt Moran (ARIA), Jock Zonfrillo (Orana), and Massimo Bottura (Osteria), according to a post from Le Cordon Bleu, where he trained.

Ex-husband of multimillionaire BondiBoost founder debuts new romance amid their messy split

Gabriel Jakob has made headlines recently following his high-profile split from BondiBoost founder Alexandra Jakob. Now, it seems the Swedish-born businessman has found a new love, appearing in pictures posted by stylist and wardrobe curator Anjelica Margaritis. Despite Jakob's, 43, shyness towards the camera and tendency to hide his face in pictures, he was instantly recognisable in the 27-year-old's snaps thanks to his slick haircut, strong build and designer clothes. In the photographs, Anjelica could be seen posing for the camera while her beau turned his head. Gabriel similarly shielded his face from the camera in his controversial profile piece with the Australian Financial Review last August. The story described Gabriel building a $550 million business empire without making any direct reference to him. Gabriel's ex wife Alexandra, who grew up in poverty and dropped out of school in Year 10, founded a chain of childcare centres and launched the hugely popular haircare brand BondiBoost. She met her second husband Gabriel four years after buying her first childcare centre. At the time, Mr Jakob was a brand manager for the courier and freight company Pack & Send. The Sydney couple's 12-year relationship ended in separation in May 2023 and their acrimonious divorce in May 2024 has been followed by ongoing, extreme bitterness. She is now alleging that he falsely claimed credit for her phenomenal success, a claim he vehemently denies. Alexandra has launched legal action against her former husband in the Federal Court. The 42-year-old filed a statement of claim in June listing Gabriel and his company Hyper Capital Pty Ltd as respondents. She will be represented by Sue Chrysanthou SC, one of Australia's most in-demand barristers. Gabriel told Daily Mail Australia he would be strenuously defending the allegations. It is understood Alexandra will allege Gabriel made a series of false statements in the AFR article, with Mr Jakob denying the allegations being made by his ex-wife against him. The AFR and the journalist who wrote the piece, Rich List editor Yolanda Redrup, are not parties to the legal action, and Alexandra is not accusing them of defamation. The article in question - which described Gabriel in fawning terms as an 'immigrant' success story and 'one of the most active Australian entrepreneurs... you've never heard of' - is still online. Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting Gabriel has misrepresented his role in the businesses, only that Alexandra will assert he has.

A much-loved real estate agent has died after becoming trapped under a ride-on mower. Ty Babbidge, 55, was killed following the horrific accident at his property on Grandview Road in Pullenvale, west of Brisbane, at 7.30pm on Friday. Mr Babbidge had been working for Brisbane Real Estate for more than ten years. Director and principal Kel Goesch said he was devastated by the news. 'Ty was one of the most generous, happy and genuine people on this planet. He cared a lot about others,' he told the Courier Mail. 'He was a lot of people's great friend, but he was very passionate and proud about his family.' Mr Babbidge had four properties listed across Kholo in Brisbane, Seventeen Mile in the Lockyer Valley, Fernvale in Somerset, and Greenmount in Toowoomba. Queensland Police are treating the death as non-suspicious. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
