A San Bernardino County man was arrested for allegedly stealing a car from a seller on Facebook Marketplace.
The victim posted her 2015 Toyota Scion for sale and was contacted by the suspect, Joseph Gomez, 26, of Victorville.
Gomez inquired about the vehicle and planned to meet the woman on May 13 at a residence on the 16000 block of Lariat Road to inspect the car, authorities said.
During the inspection, Gomez stepped into the vehicle and drove away with the car. The victim contacted law enforcement, who began investigating. At 1:42 p.m., deputies spotted the stolen car near Roy Rogers Drive and the 15 Freeway.
'Deputies conducted a high-risk traffic stop and contacted the driver,' the sheriff's department said.
Gomez was arrested for vehicle theft and the possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto.
'The Victorville Police Department would like to remind the public to be safe when conducting in-person purchases or sales through online marketplaces, authorities said. 'Meet in a public place and during daylight hours. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you and make someone aware of your meeting plans.'
No further details were released. Anyone with information about the case can call the Victorville Police Station at 760-241-2911 or Sheriff's Dispatch at 760-956-5001.

College Students Are Using ‘No Contact Orders' to Block Each Other in Real Life

The 'Notice of No Contact' order landed in May's inbox on Feb. 15, 2022. It was stern and lawyerly and contained a bulleted list of prohibited behaviors between May, then a Tulane freshman, and her former roommate: No approaching each other at any time. No communicating through third parties. No social media interactions whatsoever. The directive, which came from Tulane's division of student affairs, was 'based on the right of every Tulane community member to avoid contact with another community member if such contact may be harmful or detrimental.' Though the measure was purportedly 'nondisciplinary,' it ended on an ominous note: 'A violation of this Order could result in an immediate interim suspension and against [sic] conduct charges to you.'

Jurors have convicted a Minnesota man of killing 5 young woman in a 2023 vehicle crash

MINNEAPOLIS — A state court jury convicted a Minneapolis-area man Friday of third-degree murder and vehicular homicide in the deaths of five young women in a crash that authorities said was caused by him speeding, running a red light and slamming into their car. Jurors in Hennepin County District Court deliberated two days before reaching their verdict in the case of Derrick John Thompson, 29, of Brooklyn Park, The Minnesota Star Tribune reported . In November, a federal court jury convicted Thompson on drug and firearms charges because investigators found a handgun, ammunition and illegal drugs in his vehicle after the June 2023 crash, and he is awaiting sentencing in that case.
