The Centre is open to modifying its Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SMEC) on the basis of the outcomes of the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the US and other free trade agreements (FTAs), according to a senior government official.
If the discussions yield to slashing tariffs on imported cars to 15 per cent, similar to what is mentioned in the SMEC, with specified investment numbers, the government may revise the policy accordingly to keep it attractive to global auto manufacturers, the official said.
At present, India is involved in BTA talks with

PC Mohan Flags ₹28,405 Cr Metro Cost, Calls for Red Line Reassessment

The Union Government has asked for a revision of the cost estimates for Bengaluru's Metro Phase 3A (Red Line), citing its exceptionally high projected cost. The line, planned from Sarjapur to Hebbal, is the most expensive project in Namma Metro's history, estimated at ₹28,405 crore, or ₹776 crore per kilometre. Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan justified the Centre's move, stating that the line is indeed crucial for the city's future transit needs, but that the costs must be reviewed. 'Bengaluru's Metro Phase 3A (Red Line) from Sarjapur to Hebbal is crucial, but at ₹28,405 crore (₹776 crore/km), it is the most expensive project in Namma Metro's history. The Centre has rightly sought revisions. BMRCL will now reassess and aim to reduce the high estimated costs,' Mohan tweeted. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has directed that an expert agency review the cost estimate before the project receives final approval from the State Government. According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the cost escalations are due to several factors, including: Land acquisition Station construction Underground tunneling and alignment Traction and power supply Signalling and telecommunication systems Train procurement The proposed Red Line spans 36.59 km, with 22.14 km elevated and 14.45 km underground. It will include 28 stations in total — 17 elevated and 11 underground. This stretch is considered vital for connecting the growing IT hubs of Sarjapur with north Bengaluru, including key areas around Hebbal. However, the revised cost structure and implementation timeline will now depend on the findings of the expert review and subsequent decisions by BMRCL. Maruti Suzuki shares under watch today as rare earth crunch hits EV output target

Maruti Suzuki 's stock may come under pressure as the company has sharply reduced its near-term electric vehicle (EV) production plans for FY26, citing rare earth supply constraints, Financial Express reports. The revision comes ahead of the much-anticipated debut of the e-Vitara, the automaker's first electric SUV offering. A cut down of e-Vitara production On Tuesday, Reuters had reported that Maruti Suzuki has slashed its production target for the e-Vitara by nearly two-thirds. The company now plans to manufacture just 8,200 units between April and September 2025, down from an earlier target of 26,500 units. The slowdown is attributed to shortages of rare earth materials —crucial components used in EV motors and high-tech manufacturing. The company, however, said it remains committed to its full-year target of producing 67,000 EVs by March 2026, with plans to ramp up output in the latter half of the fiscal year. Market Reaction Maruti Suzuki's share price has gained 2.4 per cent over the past five trading sessions but has fallen more than 1 per cent over the last month. Despite a 11 per cent return over six months, the stock has remained volatile, shedding 3 per cent in the past year. Analysts will be closely watching for further clarity on rare earth availability and Maruti's ability to scale up EV output in the latter half of FY26. The developments may have broader implications for India's emerging EV ecosystem and its export competitiveness. Global supply chain challenges continue to weigh on the auto industry. CRISIL Ratings in its latest report warned in a note that a disruption lasting beyond a month could delay EV launches, disrupt production schedules, and dampen the sector's overall momentum. The impact of Maruti Suzuki's production cut is expected to ripple through its parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation . India is Suzuki's largest market by revenue and serves as a key global production hub for EVs, with most e-Vitaras destined for export markets in Europe and Japan.

One more electronics cluster for Tamil Nadu approved: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Chennai: The Centre has recently issued its approval to establish one more electronics cluster in Tamil Nadu taking the overall electronics cluster planned in the state to three, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday. The Union government has been giving major thrust in areas like mobile phone manufacturing, laptop and server manufacturing in Tamil Nadu, Vaishnaw, the Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology and Railways Minister, said. "I am very happy to share with you that many of these new projects in mobile phone, laptop and server manufacturing are now getting set up in Tamil Nadu and our Prime Minister's vision of making Tamil Nadu as one of the major manufacturing hubs for electronics is now getting realised," he said through a video conference facility at an event held at the IIT Madras. "One more electronics manufacturing cluster has been approved (by the Centre) recently and I hope to see its construction very soon. That is the way, we are hoping that Tamil Nadu will get the most modern amenities," he said. In March 2025, Vaishnaw at the inauguration of Zetwerk Electronics' seventh manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur near Chennai, said his Ministry has approved setting up of two electronics manufacturing clusters worth Rs 1,112 crore in Tamil Nadu. The proposed facilities would produce electronic components for various sectors including consumer durables and IT hardware and would serve for both domestic and international markets in the future, he had said then. However, the Minister in his brief address did not declare the investment details of how much would be required to establish the third electronics cluster in the State. On the railways front, Vaishnaw said that Tamil Nadu is set to become a wheel manufacturing hub for trains in the country while the State has already became an hub for manufacturing Vande Bharat range of trains. "As you know, in the locomotives and in high speed trains, very high strength wheels are required. They are all now getting manufactured at a factory near Chennai. Again Railways has fully supported that factory so that way Tamil Nadu will become the hub for wheel manufacturing also," he said.
