FIFA accused of ‘turning blind eye to basic needs of players' by union

The National2 days ago
FIFPRO, which represents players' interests at the global level, said FIFA had adopted an 'autocratic' approach to governing the sport under Infantino.
'FIFA continues to systematically ignore and silence the real issues players face in different parts of the world,' FIFPRO said in a statement following a meeting of 58 player unions in Amsterdam on Friday.
'It is unacceptable for an organisation that claims global leadership to turn a blind eye to the basic needs of the players.
'One clear example of this disconnect was the recent Club World Cup, celebrated by President Infantino despite being held under conditions that were extreme and inappropriate for any human being, demonstrating a troubling insensitivity to human rights, even when it concerns elite athletes.
'The overloaded match calendar, the lack of adequate physical and mental recovery periods, extreme playing conditions, the absence of meaningful dialogue, and the ongoing disregard for players' social rights have regrettably become pillars of FIFA's business model; this is a model that puts the health of players at risk and sidelines those at the heart of the game.
'We will continue to speak out against abuse and demand fair, dignified, and sustainable conditions for all players. Football needs responsible leadership, not emperors. It needs fewer autocratic monologues and more genuine, inclusive, and transparent dialogue.'
FIFPRO expressed deep concern earlier this month that FIFA announced a raft of measures designed to boost player welfare following a meeting on the eve of the Club World Cup final which took place without any involvement from FIFPRO.
FIFPRO Europe is part of a legal complaint to the European Commission, also involving domestic leagues, filed last autumn over what it considers to be a lack of consultation from FIFA around the international match calendar.
The unions and leagues accuse FIFA of abusing a dominant position in the market to negatively impact player welfare and domestic competitions.

Ian Wright speaks out England's change for Euro 2025 final against Spain

Ian Wright says he is 'really pleased' to see Jess Carter recalled to England's starting XI for the side's Women's Euro 2025 final clash with Spain. England head coach Sarina Wiegman has made one change to the team that came from behind to beat Italy in the semi-finals, with Esme Morgan dropping down to the substitutes bench. Prior to the win over Italy, Carter revealed that she had been subjected to racist abuse throughout the Lionesses campaign and would therefore be 'taking a step back' from social media. The rest of Wiegman's England squad have rallied around the 27-year-old defender in the intervening days, while FIFA president Gianni Infantino came out condemning the vile online messages. Though Carter had started all four of the holders' games in Switzerland heading into defeat of Italy, there was some uncertainty over the centre-back's inclusion considering Morgan's impressive performance last time out in Geneva. Spain, the reigning world champions, have made two changes to their team that got the better of Germany in the semi-finals, with Laia Aleixandri and Athenea del Castillo coming in for Claudia Pina and Maria Méndez respectively. On Carter's return at the heart of Wiegman's defence, ex-England striker Wright said on ITV:'I'm really pleased, to a certain extent, to see Jess Carter in there. 'That says to me she's got a lot of faith in her. 'She's playing in the same position where she had a little bit of a torrid time, so for her to come in, playing in that position, she's putting a lot of faith in her. 'Hopefully Jess can repay that faith.' ITV colleague Karen Carney, meanwhile, called on Carter's team-mates to 'help out' when playing it out from the back at Basel's St Jakob-Park. 'I think what we've seen from Sarina is that she's always picked her players and I think Esme Morgan was sensational,' the former Arsenal, Chelsea and England winger said. More Trending 'But obviously with Sarina, she likes to play with her tried and trusted and in Jess, she believes in that. 'What I will see is we have to move the ball quicker. Teams have, perhaps, tracked Jess a little bit so Alex Greenwood has got to help her out, our other defenders and midfielders. 'They have certainly got to help her out, particularly when we play out from the back today.' More to follow. MORE: Who is commentating on England's Euro 2025 final vs Spain? New Liverpool signing's FaceTime with team-mate before agreeing transfer revealed

Ryan Gravenberch is set to link up with Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield this season, and the Liverpool midfielder has lifted the lid on giving the full-back advice on what to expect from Arne Slot's set-up Ryan Gravenberch has explained that he shared a FaceTime call with Jeremie Frimpong before the full-back signed for Liverpool. The pair of Dutchmen have already shared the pitch on occasion for their nation, and will now link up at Anfield with hopes of defending the Reds' Premier League title in 2025/26. ‌ But before Frimpong committed his future to Liverpool, he shared a chat about the club with Gravenberch. Speaking about Arne Slot's summer signings thus far, the midfielder said: "Jeremie, obviously I know him for a long time already so I have a really good relationship with him. So I'm really happy that he is here." ‌ He added: "We had a little FaceTime [before he signed]. We spoke to each other and he asked me about Liverpool and everything and I gave him really good advice! I am happy that he is here." ‌ Gravenberch joined Liverpool in the summer of 2023 in a £34.2million deal with Bayern Munich and quickly became part and parcel of Jurgen Klopp's plans - making 26 appearances in his maiden season. Last season under Slot proved even more fruitful for the 23-year-old, who missed just one Premier League clash for Liverpool, and was instrumental to the club winning the title. Frimpong, meanwhile, was recruited by Slot at the turn of this summer's transfer window, with the manager eager to find a suitable replacement for a departing Trent Alexander-Arnold who joined Real Madrid ahead of the Club World Cup. As a result, his £29.5m release clause with Bayer Leverkusen was activated, and he has enjoyed his time on Merseyside since. However, Frimpong isn't the only high-profile signing that Liverpool have acquired this summer. The club also struck a £40m deal with Bournemouth for left-back Milos Kerkez, before securing the services of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a £79m move. Slot's marquee signing, however, comes in the form of Florian Wirtz, smashing the club's record transfer fee in bringing the attacking-midfielder on board from Leverkusen for a staggering £116m last month. And Gravenberch showered the former Bundesliga star with praise as he joined the ranks of Anfield. He said: "I think everyone knows Florian and also here in training he is a really good player: technical, really good vision, so I am really happy that he is here and I can't wait for the season to start also to play with him." ‌ It comes Liverpool are currently amid a pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan as they ready themselves for their 2025/26 Premier League campaign. The Reds kicked off their preparations for the fresh season with a 3-1 win over Preston North End at Deepdale on July 13, before securing a 5-0 win over Stoke City at the AXA Training Centre a week later. A 4-2 loss to AC Milan then ensued at the Kai Tak Stadium, with Liverpool's next fixture coming in the form of a friendly with Yokohama FC at the Nissan Stadium come Wednesday. Upon their return, Liverpool will play host to Athletic Club at Anfield come August 4, and face Crystal Palace at Wembley for the Community Shield six days later. Their seasonal opener with Bournemouth then takes place come August 15 on home soil. Outlining his goals for the new season, Gravenberch said: "To make it a really nice season again. My aims are like last season, I just want to be there for the team and to show myself again and be as consistent as I can."

Rodrygo could be the first top drawer Brazilian superstar to play in England, but he would come with one condition

OUR South American football expert reveals why it's not always easy to be Rodrygo's coach HOT ROD Rodrygo could be the first top drawer Brazilian superstar to play in England, but he would come with one condition Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IF RODRYGO leaves Real Madrid and comes to England over the next few weeks, it could be good for him, good for the Brazilian national team... and good for the Premier League. Tottenham and Liverpool are both keeping tabs on the star, who comes with a price tag of around £80million. If Rodrygo lines up for a Premier League club next season, it will mark a major first for the game in this country. It is arguable that English football has never been able to lure a genuine, absolute top drawer Brazilian superstar. Chelsea's new signing Estevao Willian has the potential to become the one - at 24, Rodrygo is much more reality than potential. Read more on football Barcelona release statement as thousands unable to watch Rashford debut But for all his triumphs, he could be more. But perhaps he has been paying the price for taking the road to Real Madrid - irresistible, just like Barcelona, for any Brazilian talent, but always with a possible pitfall. In order to fit so many stars into the side, someone has to sacrifice. Last season was not a happy one at the Bernabeu for Rodrygo - and it may have plenty to do with the arrival of Kylian Mbappe. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS Previously, Real had lost Karin Benzema, and then-coach Carlo Ancelotti had found a way to operate without a fixed centre forward. Vinicius Junior would cut in from the left wing to attack the vacant space, and Rodrygo would flit around and work out where he could do the most damage. Mbappe destroyed the equilibrium. Jude Bellingham said last season that he thought Rodrygo was the most gifted, talented player in the entire Real Madrid squad - and that he was also the one who sacrificed himself most for the side. 4 4 Rodrygo has 33 caps for Brazil, with seven goals Credit: Getty Sometimes versatility can be a curse. In the case of Vinicius, it is very clear what he does - he is a winger with a remarkable extra gear who can play outside to in, breaking towards the penalty box. Defining Rodrygo is more difficult. He is such a complete talent, able to operate all across the attacking line, that he is harder to categorise - and so it may be easier to try to bend him into any shape that best fits the needs of the team. The change of coach does not appear to have improved matters for the young Brazilian. Under new boss Xabi Alonso he did not feature much during the Club World Cup - and the only time he started he was used as a hug-the-touchline right winger, which would seem a very restrictive role for a player of his intelligence and ability. The time may well have come for him to seek a club where he can be more important in the pecking order, where he has more of a say in sorting out his function, where he can truly define himself as a player. Tite, the coach who took Brazil to the last two World Cups, was delighted to have Rodrygo on board. Before the rise of Vini Junior, Tite even flirted with the idea of making Rodrygo even more central to his attacking plans. He beamed about Rodrygo, and described him as 'a footballer.' It would seem in everyone's best interests to give him the freedom to determine exactly what type of footballer he wants to be. And if that can happen in the Premier League, then English fans will have plenty to savour.
