Ejipura flyover work picks up after years of delay, completion target set for year-end

Time of Indiaa day ago
Bengaluru: After nearly eight years of slow progress, the city's much-delayed Ejipura flyover project is finally moving at a brisk pace. With 60% of the construction now complete, BBMP has set an ambitious goal of completing the 2.5km flyover by the end of this year.
The flyover, stretching from Ejipura Main Road (Inner Ring Road Junction) to Kendriya Sadan Junction, is intended to decongest the heavily burdened 100-Feet Road in Koramangala. The contract was originally given to Simplex Infrastructure in 2017, but the project was marked by repeated delays, missed deadlines, and multiple contractor issues.
Raghavendra Prasad, chief engineer, quality control division, BBMP, stated, "After a prolonged impasse, we are now confident of delivering the project within this calendar year."
According to him, nearly 70 out of 84 pillars are complete, with 325 of the necessary 762 segments already installed.

Despite a contract deadline of Nov 2019, Simplex managed to finish only 42.8% of the project within five years, even after time extensions and incurring a penalty of Rs 2.5 crore. The urban development department eventually terminated the company's contract on March 3, 2022, and seized the security deposit of Rs 10.16 crore.
BBMP floated fresh tenders three times, all of which went unanswered. In the fourth round, Hyderabad-based BSCPCL Pvt Ltd submitted a bid and was awarded the remaining work in Nov 2023, with a 15-month timeline.
A senior BBMP official involved in the oversight mentioned, "Initially, there were coordination issues even with the new contractor. We had to issue two notices to BSCPCL, and the chief minister himself warned that delays would not be tolerated.
That sent a strong message."
The cost to complete the remaining construction, excluding GST, is now set at Rs 176.1 crore, which is Rs 48 crore higher than the original estimate. Payments totalling Rs 52.1 crore have already been released to BSCPCL by BBMP, tied to the project's physical progress.
Down and up ramps are being constructed on the Madiwala-Ejipura side, and a loop towards Sarjapur is also underway. Upon completion, the flyover aims to make seven major junctions signal-free, thereby significantly improving travel times across one of the most congested areas of the city.
One of the final challenges is the acquisition of 5,999 sq metres of land near St John's Medical College and hostel, required to complete the structure. "We are in discussions with the hospital authorities. Once that land is handed over, the final phase of construction will move faster. This flyover will transform mobility across the Koramangala–Ejipura–Madivala corridor," said Prasad.
BBMP has also initiated the transplantation of 30–40 trees along the project alignment.

TN can save Rs 16K crore in 5 years by harnessing floating solar power: Report

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu can unlock savings of over Rs 16,000 crore in five years by harnessing floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) systems across 57 major reservoirs, finds a new report by Climate Risk Horizons (CRH). The 3.5 GW FPV capacity could replace 1.68 GW of high-cost coal-based power from the ageing North Chennai and Thoothukudi thermal power plants. The 57 large category dams chosen for analysis have a total surface area of 35,486 acres when their water levels are at their annual minimum. The analysis suggests that utilising just 40% of this minimum recorded water area would yield an installed capacity of 3.55 GW of FPV assuming a requirement of 4 acres/MW. The report estimates that electricity from FPV would cost just Rs 3.16 per unit less than half the average tariff of state coal power plants, which stands at Rs 7.12/kWh. This transition could save the Tangedco Rs 3,211 crore annually, providing much-needed relief to the debt-laden utility. 'Tangdco's power purchase model, dominated by expensive coal-based energy, has been a massive financial drain,' said Ashish Fernandes, CEO of Climate Risk Horizons and co-author of the report. 'FPV is not only cheaper, but also avoids land acquisition hurdles and curbs water evaporation from reservoirs.'

MLA inaugurates tobacco purchase centres

Parchur: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, moved by the plight of the Black Burley tobacco farmers, who were deceived by the private companies, stepped in to protect them with the direct purchase of the crop through Markfed, observed Parchur MLA Yeluri Sambasiva Rao. He inaugurated the tobacco purchase centres at Market Yard in Martur and Adusumalli of Yaddanapudi mandal on Monday. Speaking at the inaugural ceremonies, MLA Yeluri stated that CM Naidu was deeply moved by the farmers' plight and decided to intervene when private companies misled farmers about market demand and subsequently reduced purchase prices. For the first time in the country's history, the government is directly purchasing burley tobacco, he announced. The MLA said that the state government has allocated Rs 273 crore for the procurement through Markfed, ensuring that farmers' crops are purchased even when private companies fail to honour their commitments. He said that the initiative aims to protect farmers from exploitation by companies that previously encouraged excessive cultivation before reducing purchase quantities and prices. He advised the farmers to demand written agreements from companies before planting tobacco and suggested transitioning to alternative crops, noting that the government has announced a minimum support price of Rs 2,400 for maize with potential for further increases. In the evening, MLA Yeluri met with the agriculture minister, Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, the special secretary of the agriculture department, Rajasekhar, and other officials at the Regional Agriculture Research Station in Lam. After the meeting, the MLA said that they are prioritising farmers with production below 20 quintals for immediate purchase, followed by those with larger quantities. He announced that the government has assured the establishment of additional purchase centres and warehouses to expedite the procurement process.
