Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upsets top-seeded Coco Gauff to reach Montreal quarterfinals
MONTREAL (AP) — Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko upset top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday night to reach the National Bank Open quarterfinals.
Gauff dropped to 2-3 since winning the French Open. She followed the major victory with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon, then overcame double-fault problems to win two three-set matches in Montreal. Gauff had five double-faults Saturday after having 23 in her opener against Danielle Collins and 14 against Veronika Kudermetova.
The 18-year-old Mboko, ranked 85th in the world, will face the winner of the late match between Lin Zhu of China and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain.
In Rome in May, Gauff rallied to beat Mboko 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a round-of-64 match.
Earlier, 24th-seeded Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and ninth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan set up a quarterfinal match. Kostyuk beat McCartney Kessler of the United States 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, and Rybakina topped Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, $228 million maximum contract extension, a person with knowledge of the situation said Monday. Fox is under contract this season for the final year of his five year, $163 million deal. The extension starts in 2026-27, said the person, who spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Spurs have yet to announce the agreement. ESPN first reported the deal. The move was expected after the Spurs made a big splash at the trade deadline last season by getting Fox from the Sacramento Kings. Fox has career averages of 21.5 points and 6.1 assists in eight NBA seasons. He averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games with the Spurs last season. Lyon completes the signing of Czech Republic midfielder Pavel Šulc from Viktoria Plzeň
LYON, France (AP) — Czech Republic international Pavel Šulc has completed a move to French club Lyon from Viktoria Plzeň. Both clubs confirmed the transfer for a fee of 10 million euros ($11.6 million) on Monday. The offensive midfielder scored 15 goals and had nine assists last season for Viktoria in the Czech league, having netted 18 goals and added six assists the previous campaign. In July, he won the Czech Republic's Golden Ball award for the first time for being the best player of the 2024-25 season. The 24-year-old Šulc has played 14 international games for the Czech Republic, scoring four goals. ___
