Capitals' Alex Ovechkin to return for rematch with Jackets

Reuters13-04-2025

April 13 - The Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets wrap up their season series on Sunday in the nation's capital one day after the Blue Jackets blanked the Capitals 7-0 at home.
The Blue Jackets (37-33-9, 83 points), who have won three straight, still have not been eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention because the Montreal Canadiens lost 2-1 in overtime on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday evening.
Columbus scored three times in both the first and second periods to cruise to a win over a Capitals (50-20-9, 109 points) team that gave Alex Ovechkin the day off and had a few key players -- defenseman Jakob Chychrun (illness), center Aliaksei Protas (foot) and goalie Logan Thompson (upper body) -- also out.
"The intensity was there real early, obviously, and it's not a bad thing," Columbus coach Dean Evason said after the win.
Ovechkin, who set the NHL career goal-scoring record a week ago, is expected to play Sunday evening. He skated Saturday with Thompson, who last played April 2 after suffering an upper-body injury midgame that day against the Carolina Hurricanes. Washington coach Spencer Carbery could not commit to Chychrun or others returning.
Second-year center Adam Fantilli had his fifth multi-goal game of the season on Saturday. His first goal came in the final minute of the first period, after he laid a shoulder into Ryan Leonard at the opposite end of the rink that sent the Capitals rookie to the ice.
The hit occurred as both players were going for the puck in the slot.
"It's not like I was hunting him the whole way down the ice," Fantilli said. "I saw him probably half a second before I ran into him and whatever. Then to be able to go down and score, that was great. I thought it gave us the momentum there going to the second period, and we kept rolling with it."
Fantilli, who ranks second on the team with 27 goals, has scored five this month.
Washington's playoff status has been secure for a while. They own the top seed in the Eastern Conference and are five points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the Presidents' Trophy, which goes to the team with the best regular-season record.
The Capitals are 3-3 in their last six, with each of the losses by three goals or more. Saturday's shutout was just the third this season for a team that entered the weekend with a league-best 3.59 goals per game.
Ovechkin (42 goals, 28 assists, 70 points), Protas (30-36-66) and Chychrun (20-27-47) are among Washington's top eight offensive players.
Carbery told reporters he did some "homework" and found that the Colorado Avalanche lost six of their last seven games in the 2021-22 season before going on to win the Stanley Cup. That team, of course, also had players like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.
"We're more of a team game, and when our team game slips, you see what happens tonight and some other nights down the stretch here," he added.
"So, it's a fine line, and I've talked about it a lot. We've got to figure out a way to play the right way, match the urgency level (Sunday) afternoon and get our game on track."

For Miami, Dane Myers had three hits and two RBIs and Eric Wagaman had two hits and drove in three. James Wood had three hits, including a two-run home run, scored three runs and drove in four for Washington, which has lost six straight. CJ Abrams (three runs) and Keibert Ruiz each had three hits. The teams combined for 33 hits. Miami starter Edward Cabrera pitched three innings and left after colliding with Wagaman and Abrams on a play at first in the bottom of the third. Cabrera allowed two runs on two hits and struck out five. Tyler Phillips (1-0) pitched two-thirds of an inning for the win and Calvin Faucher tossed a scoreless ninth for his sixth save. Washington starter Mitchell Parker (4-7) allowed six runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. The Marlins took a 1-0 lead two batters into the game on Ramirez's first homer of the night. In the second, Miami loaded the bases with one out, but settled for one run on Nick Fortes' sacrifice fly. Ramirez led off a four-run third with another homer to left, his 10th of the season, and Miami's lead was 3-0. Otto Lopez singled and scored on Wagaman's double. After Connor Norby walked, Myers doubled home Wagaman and Norby to make it 6-0. In the bottom half, Abrams reached on an infield single after first baseman Wagaman collided with Cabrera at the bag. Abrams also made contact with Cabrera on the play. Wood followed with his 17th home run and the Nationals were within 6-2. Cabrera finished the inning but did not come out for the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth by Fortes and Xavier Edwards (three hits) made it 8-2. Robert Hassell III and Abrams singled leading off the seventh and Wood doubled them home. Nathaniel Lowe singled home Wood, then Luis Garcia Jr. reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Alex Call's single. Ruiz's single scored Josh Bell to bring Washington within a run at 8-7. Miami answered in the eighth, getting a two-run single from Wagaman to make it 10-7 and added a run on a fielder's choice. In the Washington eighth, Abrams scored on Lowe's groundout and Wood crossed the plate to make it 11-9 when Bell hit into a fielder's choice. --Field Level Media

Taylor Swift fans beg Travis Kelce to cover up as he nearly repeats wardrobe malfunction on date night

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift stole the show at the Stanley Cup on Thursday night but there was one moment where even the Swifties feared seeing a little too much of the NFL star. The power couple are spending time in Florida while Kelce is getting in shape for the upcoming NFL season. But they took some time for themselves on Thursday night with a surprise appearance as the Panthers lost a breathtaking game 5-4 to the Edmonton Oilers, who tied the series at 2-2. Swift, 35, stunned in her elegant sweatsuit while the Chiefs star turned up in a Kansas City red sweater and shorts which, in the eyes of some fans watching from home, were a little too short. At one stage during the game, cameras zoomed in on the couple deep in conversation in their VIP suite, fans feared Kelce was going to endure a wardrobbe malfunction he infamously endured once before in an interview with Andrew Santino. 'Travis please close your legs I feel anxious,' one Swftie wrote, resharing the clip. Another said: 'I DIDNT WANNA BE THE ONE TO SAY IT but holy hell the manspreading. I'm stressing for him.' A different fan said: 'She looks amazing here. So much so that I didn't even notice his potential wardrobe malfunction.' It isn't the first time Kelce has been under a bit of extra scrutiny for his short shorts. Before he started dating Swift, Kelce endured the same fashion faux-pas in an interview on his friend Santino's podcast. Santino recalled the incident during his 2024 New Heights appearance, saying: 'We set up [my podcast] at the crib because we were moving, and so it was kind of a tight squeeze and the cameras and the angles, all this stuff. 'And my editor calls me, and he's like, "Bro, I don't know how to tell you this, but Travis was falling out of his shorts.... his boys were sliding out". 'And I was like, 'Oh, no.' And he goes, 'Do you wanna, like, call him and reshoot it?' I said, 'Just put a Kansas City Chiefs logo over his package whenever it falls out.' 'I didn't have my Tommy John's on,' an amused Kelce joked to Santino about the incident. And true to his word, Santino broadcast the 2020 interview with the Chiefs logo protecting Travis. After nearly retiring after the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles in February, Kelce is returning for at least one more season with the Chiefs in the NFL. They begin their 2025 campaign in Brazil, against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo on September 5. Reports this week have said that Swift is more excited than ever for the football season to begin. It is the first time she can follow Kelce without tour dates to play since they started dating in September 2023.

Oilers overturn three-goal deficit to stun Panthers and level Stanley Cup final

Leon Draisaitl scored in overtime for the fourth time this playoffs and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Florida Panthers 5-4 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final on Thursday night to tie the series, erasing a three-goal deficit and bouncing back after allowing the late tying goal. Jake Walman gave the Oilers their first lead with 6:24 left in the third period, before Sam Reinhart scored with 19.5 seconds left to send it to overtime. Three of the first four games of this final have needed extra time to be settled, the first time that has happened since 2013 and fifth time in NHL history. Draisaitl's goal 11:18 into OT – the fourth session of extra hockey between these teams – sent the series back to Western Canada all even. Game 5 of what's turning into a classic back-and-forth series between two hockey heavyweights is Saturday night in Edmonton. More to follow.
