Lakers pluck standout defender Chris Mañon off Warriors' summer league roster with a 2-way contract
The Lakers reached a deal Thursday with Mañon, who spent last season at Vanderbilt after playing three years at Cornell. He averaged at least 1.7 steals per game in all four of his collegiate seasons.
After going undrafted, Mañon played for the Warriors at the California Classic and again in Las Vegas this month, drawing attention for his two-way play.
Mañon had eight points, three rebounds, three steals and two blocks when Golden State beat the Lakers in the first game of the California Classic. He finished with 9.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.4 blocks in seven summer games for the Warriors.
The Lakers re-signed big man Christian Koloko to a two-way contract earlier this week. The deal for Mañon leaves them with one more two-way contract available.

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. This article takes a look at Wes Matthews, a guard who played for the Lakers during the Showtime era. Matthews played three years of college basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and was taken with the No. 14 pick in the 1980 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets. As a rookie, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks and averaged 12.4 points and 5.2 assists a game. He ended up bouncing around the league, mostly as a reserve, over the next several years. In October 1986, the Lakers, needing some backcourt depth, signed Matthews as a free agent. The Lakers already had Hall of Famer Michael Cooper, who played both guard spots and small forward, but they also needed some added insurance at the point guard spot. Matthews didn't play much, but he averaged 4.9 points and 2.4 assists in 12.3 minutes a game during two seasons with the team. He was very lucky with his timing, as Los Angeles won the NBA championship during both of those seasons. Matthews moved on to the now-defunct Continental Basketball Association, where he won a league championship with the Tulsa Fast Breakers during the 1988-89 campaign. In the fourth and final game of the championship series, he hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Tulsa the title. That meant Matthews had won championships in three straight seasons of pro basketball. Meanwhile, the Lakers went after a third straight title that same year, only to get swept by the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals after Byron Scott and Magic Johnson injured their hamstrings. Matthews would appear in one game with the Hawks during the 1989-90 season to close out his NBA career. His son Wesley would play 15 seasons in the league, including one with the Lakers.

Throughout the summer, rumors have linked the Golden State Warriors with the addition of Al Horford. The free agent big man is expected to head to the Bay Area in what could be the final stop of his career. He's spent the past four years with the Boston Celtics, helping them win the 2024 NBA championship. However, Horford doesn't appear to be in a rush to make a final decision regarding his current free agency. He could still opt to retire now, rather than chasing another championship ring. There's also the concern that Golden State's negotiations with Jonathan Kuminga are slowing down the franchise's ability to strengthen last year's roster. During a recent appearance on ESPN's NBA Today, Anthony Slater detailed why losing out on Horford so late in the summer would be a tough blow for the Warriors, especially as Kevon Looney has already left the franchise. "All signs point to Al Horford," Slater said. "They're certainly interested in him. If they're not able to get that done, if Horford, who you hear is also mulling retirement, is not on the roster next year, it's a big miss by the Warriors as it's in their plans. They need a stretch five." Horford is the type of floor-spacing five the Warriors need. In recent years, he's become almost an exclusively perimeter-based threat, as he picks and chooses when to work out of the post or drive into the paint. He shot 36.3% from deep last season on 5.2 attempts per game, and 41.9% in 2023-24 on 4 attempts per game. Horford should fit well in Steve Kerr's five-out-based offense. Furthermore, Horford will add some positional versatility to the Warriors' defensive rotation. Even now, with him closing in on his 39th birthday, Horford can guard multiple positions on the floor, rebound in traffic and his understanding of angles makes him a high-level drive deterrent. Pairing him with Draymond Green could unlock a new level of defensive efficiency from the franchise. Unfortunately, Warriors fans may need to continue waiting for the veteran big man, as neither he nor the Warriors' front office appears to be in a rush to get the deal over the line.
