The body of a teenage boy (17) has been recovered from the river Barrow.
The body was found by Garda divers at about 11pm last night.
The teenager is understood to have been swimming with a friend when he got into difficulty at about 6.30pm in the Milford area of Co Carlow, 8km from Carlow town.
The student's friend tried to help him but also got into difficulty in the strong currents. The friend managed to swim to safety and raise the alarm.

Gardaí and emergency services from Carlow town were quickly on the scene, and a search got under way involving emergency services and the Garda Water Unit.
The teenager was a transition year student in a secondary school in Carlow town.
The scene remains cordoned off by gardaí.

More info Nearly 40 e-scooters were amongst the many items seized during a massive Garda raid in Dublin. Officers conducted 40 searches from 7am this morning as part of a Day Of Action. Operation Meacan targeted electric motorbikes suspected of being used in criminal activity. A number of items were seized during the searches in south Dublin this morning. These include: · Electric Scooters – 39 · Quads – 6 · Surron Electric Scrambler – 1 · Electric Bikes – 14 · Motorbikes – 5 · High Value Clothing - €10,000 · Cash - €13,245 · Cannabis - €12,000 · Cocaine - €2,000 · Tablets - €125 · Mobile Phones – 11 · Chainsaw – 1 · Knives · Fireworks · Motorbike Helmets – 6 · Chainsaw – 1 (Image: Garda Press Office) The searches were undertaken by members attached to the Tallaght, Crumlin and Terenure Crime Units, assisted by members from Community Policing, Uniform, Armed Support Unit, Search teams, and a local authority Dog Warden. Gardaí say it is being treated as a "tragic incident" A teenager has tragically died after he encountered difficulties while swimming in the River Barrow in Co Carlow yesterday. The young man (17) was swimming in the water at Cloghristick, Milford, Co. Carlow with his two friends, also aged in their teens, when he got into difficulty and was seen going under water. The alarm was raised at 6.30pm on Tuesday and emergency services including ambulance, fire brigade, Gardaí and the Garda Water Unit rushed to the scene and a search for the teenager commenced. Sadly a body was recovered at 11.30pm last night by the Garda Water Unit. It's understood the teenager is from Carlow Town. Gardaí say it is being treated as a "tragic incident". Garda jacket.
