The Dehradun district administration has announced a holiday for all schools from classes 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres on Tuesday, August 12, following a heavy rainfall alert from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). This closure also includes school staff and management to ensure everyone's safety during the expected downpour. The decision was made as a precaution to keep students and staff safe amid the forecast of heavy rains in the area.
Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand, the Kedarnath Yatra was put on hold for three days starting Monday after the IMD issued a red alert warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This step was taken to protect pilgrims and locals from the risks of flooding and landslides in the mountainous region. The Rudraprayag district, along with other parts of Uttarakhand, has been placed under red and orange alerts from August 12 to 14. Authorities have increased security and made arrangements to handle any emergencies. District Magistrate Prateek Jain, in a video message, urged people living near rivers and water bodies to move to safer places.
He said, 'We are monitoring the water levels closely and keeping a watch on the weather. Police, public works, and disaster management teams are all on alert.' He added that updates on when the Yatra will resume will be shared as soon as it's safe. The IMD has also issued warnings of heavy rain for other Uttarakhand districts including Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, and Nainital. The Uttarakhand Police have asked people to stay careful and adjust their travel plans based on the latest weather updates. The Kedarnath temple, located more than 11,000 feet up in the Himalayas, is a major pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Yatra season began this year on May 2 but has been temporarily paused to keep devotees safe during the monsoon.

Koyna, Radhanagari, Patgaon catchments report above 100mm rainfall
Kolhapur: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of the possibility of heavy rainfall in Maharashtra over the next five days as a low-pressure area remains active in the Bay of Bengal. Rainfall intensity is expected to be heavy across most parts of Madhya Maharashtra, including the Konkan region. Weather officials have issued an orange alert for Kolhapur and Satara districts for Sunday, with a red alert in place for Monday. Since Friday night, heavy rainfall has been recorded in the dam catchment areas of Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara districts. In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Saturday, the Patgaon catchment had received 152mm rainfall followed by Radhanagari catchment (125mm), Koyna catchment (104mm), Kasari (110mm), and Dhom dam (70mm). Due to the heavy showers, two automatic gates of the Radhanagari dam were opened, discharging 4,356 cusec of water into the Bhogawati river, a tributary of the Panchaganga. The IMD had issued an orange alert for Kolhapur on Saturday, anticipating heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds until 7pm. The water level of the Panchaganga river increased by 6ft in a day, reaching 25ft-10inch on Saturday evening at 5pm at the Rajaram barrage in the Kasba Bawda area of Kolhapur city. The barrage has a discharge capacity of 20,889 cusec. Additionally, 11 barrages in Kolhapur district were inundated on Saturday evening. The Koyna dam in Satara district has reached 87% of its capacity. An official from the Koyna dam administration said, "The dam has a gross water storage of 91TMC out of the total 105TMC water storage capacity. The dam has an inflow of 31,528 cusec, and considering the increase in rainfall activity, the dam administration commenced 2,100 cusec discharge from Saturday 4 pm onwards from the powerhouse gates of the dam.
