Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Das finally granted bail, Yunus govt files appeal against bail
Dhaka, Apr 30 (UNI) Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das was finally granted bail late on Wednesday evening, hours after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order of earlier in the day granting bail to the Hindu monk.
In a day of rapid developments, the bail of Chinmoy Das was stayed following a petition filed by the government seeking a stay on the HC verdict. Justice Md Rezaul Haque, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, stayed the bail.
Additional Attorneys General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf and Aneek R Haque had moved the stay petition on behalf of the state, the Daily Star reported.
Later on, the apex court chamber judge withdrew its stay order on a suo moto (voluntary) move as no lawyers for Chinmoy Das were present at the time, Chinmoy's lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee told The Daily Star in the evening.
The chamber judge may hold a hearing on the state's stay petition on Sunday in the presence of lawyers from both sides, according to Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Farid Uddin Khan.
Earlier around 3 pm today, the HC bench of Justice Md Atoar Rahman and Justice Md Ali Reza granted bail to Chinmoy.
Senior lawyers ZI Khan Panna, Prabir Ranjon Halder and Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee had placed arguments before the HC, saying that their client was innocent as there was no specific allegation against him.
They also prayed to the HC bench to grant bail to Chinmoy, saying that he was ill and suffering in jail without trial.
Additional Attorney General Aneek R Haque opposed the bail petition, saying that Chinmoy could interfere in the investigation proceedings if he is granted bail and released from jail.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was booked in a sedition case over alleged desecration of the Bangladeshi flag.
Earlier, on February 4, the HC issued a rule asking the government to explain why Chinmoy should not be granted bail in the sedition case, while rejecting his bail plea.
Lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee represented Chinmoy in court while Additional Attorney General Aneek R Haque appeared for the state.
Chinmoy, head of the ISKCON-run Pundarik Dham Temple in Chattogram, had spoken out against attacks on minorities across Bangladesh since the Aug 5, 2024, ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government.
Following a public rally at Chattogram's Laldighi Maidan on October 25 last year, a sedition case was filed on October 30 against Chinmoy and 18 others at Kotwali Police Station, on charges of alleged sedition – of placing the saffron flag higher than the Bangladesh national flag, charges he has denied.
Chinmoy was arrested at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport on November 25 in connection with the sedition case.
On November 26, after a lower court denied Chinmoy's bail, clashes broke out within the Chattogram court premises amid protests by his supporters.
Later that day, a lawyer Saiful Islam was beaten and hacked to death in a nearby area, and the blame was put on Chinmoy's supporters.
Several cases were filed against Chinmoy and others following the murder of the lawyer
On January 2, the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court rejected Chinmoy's bail plea.
His lawyer later applied to the High Court on January 12.
The High Court issued a rule asking why Chinmoy should not be granted bail on February 4.

Ahmedabad, June 13 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the Air India plane crash site and talked to officials and teams supervising relief efforts. Modi also went to the hospital to meet the injured and check their condition. The Prime Minister also met Ramesh Vishwas, the only survivor of the crash, and inquired about his health. He also checked on the well-being of other injured individuals. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in this unimaginable tragedy.' The tragedy occurred on Thursday afternoon when the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner went down just two minutes after takeoff. The aircraft was carrying 242 passengers, including 12 crew members. Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The passengers included 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Ramesh Vishwas, a British citizen of Indian origin, is the sole survivor and is currently receiving medical treatment. Besides those onboard, at least 24 people, including four medical students, were killed on the ground, as the plane crashed into the hostel building of the B J Medical College in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. Air India has set up a dedicated passenger hotline number, 1800 5691 444, to provide more information. Home Minister Amit Shah who visited the site last evening to review the situation has asked for a probe into the incident. A high-level committee has already been set up to oversee the inquiry. Internet ban in Bhadrak after man hurt in communal clash succumbs
BHADRAK : Internet services were suspended for 24 hours in parts of Bhadrak district from 6 am on Thursday as a precautionary measure following the death of a man who had suffered injuries in a communal clash in Tihidi block on May 30. The internet shutdown was enforced in Bhadrak town, Dhamnagar and Tihidi blocks. The 46-year-old man, Santosh Parida of Kasati village under Tihidi block, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday after battling for life at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for around two weeks. He had sustained serious head injuries during a clash with suspected cattle smugglers on May 30. Police sources said protesting illegal cattle trafficking in the area, Parida and a few local youths confronted the smugglers which led to the violent altercation. Bhadrak SP Manoj Rout said 12 persons, including the alleged mastermind of the group, have been arrested in connection with the incident. The internet suspension is intended to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain peace, he said. At least 27 platoons of police force have been deployed in sensitive locations in the district to prevent any untoward situation and maintain law and order. Local leaders along with the district administration are also facilitating inter-community dialogue to restore normalcy. The administration has urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and refrain from sharing unverified information on social media. On the day, members of Bhadrak Gau Rakshya Samiti and other Hindu organisations took out a procession carrying Parida's body in the district. Police remained on high alert throughout and ensured that the procession passed off peacefully. Earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced `10 lakh compensation for Parida's kin and a job for one of his family member. 'We stand with the bereaved family and are taking all necessary steps to ensure that peace prevails,' the CM said in a statement.

India urges restraint as Iran-Israel tensions escalate
New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) Amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel, India has expressed deep concern over recent developments, including reports of attacks on nuclear facilities and urged both sides to refrain from any further escalation. In an official statement issued here, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called on both nations to refrain from any further escalation and urged the use of existing diplomatic channels to de-escalate the situation and address underlying issues. 'We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites,' the MEA said in a statement. 'India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support," the statement said. Moreover, the MEA also said that Indian Missions in both countries are in touch with the Indian community. All Indian nationals residing in the region have been advised to remain vigilant, follow local security advisories, and prioritise their safety. 'Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories.'
