PM visits AI plane crash site, meets injured and sole survivor
Ahmedabad, June 13 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the Air India plane crash site and talked to officials and teams supervising relief efforts. Modi also went to the hospital to meet the injured and check their condition.
The Prime Minister also met Ramesh Vishwas, the only survivor of the crash, and inquired about his health. He also checked on the well-being of other injured individuals.
Modi, who reached Ahmedabad early morning, has been closely monitoring the situation since the accident left 241 passengers dead and several injured.
The Prime Minister met emergency response teams and officials at the disaster site, and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones. He was accompanied by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Nair, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and several senior officials, conducting a thorough assessment.
Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic plane crash, emphasising that the entire nation is in shock. He said that the incident has left everyone devastated.
On social media platform X, Modi shared several messages, stating, 'The plane crash in Ahmedabad has left us all in shock. The sudden and heartbreaking loss of so many lives is beyond words. My heartfelt condolences go out to all the grieving families. We share their pain, and the emptiness created will be felt for many years. Om Shanti.'
He added, 'Today, I visited the site of the accident in Ahmedabad. The scene was tragic. I met officials and teams working tirelessly since the incident. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones in this unimaginable tragedy.'
The tragedy occurred on Thursday afternoon when the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner went down just two minutes after takeoff. The aircraft was carrying 242 passengers, including 12 crew members. Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
The passengers included 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Ramesh Vishwas, a British citizen of Indian origin, is the sole survivor and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Besides those onboard, at least 24 people, including four medical students, were killed on the ground, as the plane crashed into the hostel building of the B J Medical College in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. Air India has set up a dedicated passenger hotline number, 1800 5691 444, to provide more information.
Home Minister Amit Shah who visited the site last evening to review the situation has asked for a probe into the incident. A high-level committee has already been set up to oversee the inquiry.

Rajasthan: Former BJP MP's son dies by suicide in Udaipur
In a tragic incident, a former BJP MP's son allegedly died by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room in a library in Udaipur district of Rajasthan. The deceased identified as Ashish Bhagora, son of former BJP MP from Salumbar Mahaveer Bhagora, was a library operator in Amba Mata area of Udaipur and was living in a room of the library for some time. According to police, Ashish was found dead on Saturday morning in his room. The body was lying on the ground and a piece of cloth was hanging from the ceiling. The police are conducting an investigation into the matter to ascertain the cause of the suicide. Mahaveer Bhagora died due to corona infection in 2021. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma offered condolences on the unfortunate and tragic demise of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was one of the passengers flying to London from Ahmedabad when the Boeing 787-8, Air India flight 171, crashed shortly after take-off. "The news of the demise of former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, in the plane crash in Ahmedabad is extremely sad. I pray to the Lord to give place to the departed soul in his feet and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense pain," Sharma posted on X. Rupani was in charge of the Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Grieving his death, party workers from Ludhiana's BJP unit paid tribute to the former Gujarat CM.

PM Modi begins Cyprus, Canada, Croatia tour today, 1st foreign visit after Op Sindoor
Before arriving in Canada on Monday for the G7 Summit, PM Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus, the first by an Indian PM in over two decades, and will also travel to Croatia, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian prime minister. PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia from June 15-19, the MEA said Saturday. PM Modi will visit Cyprus on June 15-16, on his way to Canada to participate in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 16-17, and conclude the five-day visit with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This will be PM Modi's first foreign tour after Operation Sindoor. 'At the invitation of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus June 15-16. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades,' the MEA said. In Nicosia, Modi will hold talks with Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol. The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, as per the MEA. Cyprus had condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions. The visit will be timely as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026. In the second leg of his visit, PM Modi will travel to Kananaskis to participate in the G7 Summit, his sixth time in a row. On June 6, PM Modi received a call from Canadian PM Carney inviting him for the summit. At the summit, PM Modi will exchange views with G7 heads of states, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on global issues, 'including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues', the MEA said. The Modi-Carney meeting on the sidelines summit next week will be an opportunity to explore ways to reset ties, the MEA said on Thursday. The development comes after more than a year-and-a-half of strained diplomatic ties between the two countries, triggered by former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's allegations about the 'potential' involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. India rejected the charges as 'absurd' and 'motivated', and consequently, both nations expelled high commissioners and other senior diplomats. The flight, destined for London Gatwick Airport (LGW), carried 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The tragic incident occurred around 1.39 pm local time (08.09 GMT) on Thursday. Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, said that the London-bound flight took off at 1.39 pm and crashed at a distance of 2 km from the airport. He confirmed that the pilot sent a Mayday call to the Air Traffic Controller; however, as the ATC tried to contact the plane, no response was received. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Saturday said that the black box of the aircraft has been recovered and the findings of the report will ascertain how the plane fell from the sky shortly after takeoff.
