Before arriving in Canada on Monday for the G7 Summit, PM Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus, the first by an Indian PM in over two decades, and will also travel to Croatia, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian prime minister.
PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia from June 15-19, the MEA said Saturday. PM Modi will visit Cyprus on June 15-16, on his way to Canada to participate in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 16-17, and conclude the five-day visit with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This will be PM Modi's first foreign tour after Operation Sindoor.
'At the invitation of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus June 15-16. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades,' the MEA said. In Nicosia, Modi will hold talks with Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol.
The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, as per the MEA. Cyprus had condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions. The visit will be timely as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.
In the second leg of his visit, PM Modi will travel to Kananaskis to participate in the G7 Summit, his sixth time in a row. On June 6, PM Modi received a call from Canadian PM Carney inviting him for the summit.
At the summit, PM Modi will exchange views with G7 heads of states, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on global issues, 'including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues', the MEA said. The Modi-Carney meeting on the sidelines summit next week will be an opportunity to explore ways to reset ties, the MEA said on Thursday.
The development comes after more than a year-and-a-half of strained diplomatic ties between the two countries, triggered by former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's allegations about the 'potential' involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. India rejected the charges as 'absurd' and 'motivated', and consequently, both nations expelled high commissioners and other senior diplomats.
PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines, officials say, even as modalities are being worked out. The G7 Leaders' Summit will be held from June 15-17.
In the final leg of his tour, PM Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia and hold bilateral discussions with his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenković and meet the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic. The visit to Croatia will also underscore India's commitment to further strengthen its engagement with partners in the EU.
In the wake of Operation Sindoor, the PM had cancelled his nation-nation tour to Europe, which included Croatia, Norway and the Netherlands.

Israel-Iran conflict may be in focus
Though the G7 Summit agenda this year was focussed on building supply chains for critical minerals, energy security, and countering foreign interference and transnational crime, the focus is likely to be on the Israel-Iran conflict and containing any escalation. PM Narendra Modi is likely to hold discussions with various stakeholders on the issue and express India's stance on dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward.

Three-nation tour opportunity to thank countries for support to India: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday embarked on a three-nation tour—his first overseas trip since the Pahalgam terror attacks and India's subsequent missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan. The visit includes stops in Canada, where he will attend the G7 Summit, and in Cyprus and Croatia. The tour is scheduled to conclude on June 19. Over the next few days, will be visiting Cyprus, Canada and Croatia to attend various programmes, including bilateral meetings and multilateral engagements. — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) June 15, 2025 Canada visit may help 'reset' strained ties In Canada, Modi is expected to engage in dialogue aimed at 'resetting' bilateral ties, which have been strained over the activities of Khalistani extremists in recent years. Intelligence sharing and other areas of cooperation are likely to be discussed. He is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump and other leaders of G7 member nations. The last Modi-Trump meeting took place in Washington in February, shortly after Trump assumed office. Focus on West Asia, AI, energy and global disruptions As per the Prime Minister's departure statement, the G7 Summit is likely to focus on the evolving situation in West Asia, particularly the Iran-Israel conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war. According to the Indian government, discussions will also cover 'crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues'. The economic fallout of US tariffs may also surface during deliberations. 'This three-nation tour is also an opportunity to thank partner countries for their steadfast support to India in our fight against cross-border terrorism, and to galvanise global understanding on tackling terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,' Modi said. Global South, 50th anniversary of G7 in focus Modi is attending the G7 at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He said the summit would provide a platform for discussions on global issues and priorities of the Global South. It will be Modi's first visit to Canada in 10 years. He is scheduled to land in Calgary on Monday after his stop in Cyprus. Strengthening India-Cyprus ties, message to Turkiye Calling Cyprus a 'close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean and EU', Modi is scheduled to meet the President of Cyprus, address business leaders, and discuss the India-Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC). The visit also carries strategic undertones. Cyprus's decades-old dispute with Turkiye, and Ankara's support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, add diplomatic weight to Modi's visit to Nicosia. India–Cyprus bilateral trade stood at $136.96 million in FY24. Cyprus ranks among India's top 10 investors, with cumulative investments of $14.65 billion between April 2000 and March 2025, according to DPIIT estimates. First-ever PM visit to Croatia In the final leg of the tour, Modi will travel to Croatia—marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country. India and Croatia enjoy cooperation across trade, investment, defence, and agriculture. Bilateral trade is approximately $300 million. Indian investments in Croatia total $48 million, while Croatian investments in India are around $6 million. India's 12th G7 participation, Modi's 6th This year marks the 50th anniversary of the G7. Although India is not a member, this is its 12th participation and Modi's 6th in the summit's Outreach Sessions. Key themes expected to be discussed include countering foreign interference, tackling transnational crime, ensuring energy security, accelerating the digital transition, securing critical mineral supply chains, and leveraging AI and quantum computing to boost growth.

Indian EVs at risk! Delay in Beijing's rare earth magnets can decelerate auto sector growth; China tightens export rules

India's car industry could be in trouble as China's stricter control over rare earth magnet exports and shipment clearances delays may slow down electric vehicle production, Crisil Ratings said. The rating agency said that a disruption of even over a month can affect EV launches, production and push back the sector's growth trajectory. Rare earth magnets Rare earth magnets are low cost but crucial to permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used in EVs and hybrids for their high torque and energy efficiency. In internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, rare earth magnets are primarily used in electric power steering systems and select other motorised components. China's restriction on export The alarm stems from Beijing's recent export restrictions, imposed in April 2025, on seven rare earth elements and finished magnets. The move, which mandates detailed end-use declarations and bans defence-linked or US-bound re-exports, has resulted in delayed clearances and growing shipment backlogs. 'With the clearance process taking at least 45 days, this added scrutiny has significantly delayed approvals. And the growing backlog has further slowed clearances, tightening global supply chains,' the report said, cited by ANI. India, which relied on China for over 80% of its 540-tonne magnet imports in the last fiscal, has began to feel the squeeze. Crisil revealed that by the end of May, around 30 import requests from Indian companies had received clearance from New Delhi — yet none had been approved by Chinese authorities, and no shipments had landed. 'The supply squeeze comes just as the auto sector is preparing for aggressive EV rollouts,' said Anuj Sethi, senior director at Crisil Ratings. 'Over a dozen new electric models are planned for launch, most built on PMSM platforms. While most automakers currently have 4-6 weeks of inventory, prolonged delays could start affecting vehicle production, with EV models facing deferrals or rescheduling from July 2025. A broader impact on two-wheelers (2W) and ICE PVs may follow if the supply bottlenecks persist for an extended period.' Passenger vehicle volumes are forecast to grow 2–4% in FY26, but EVs, starting from a lower base, are expected to rise 35–40%. Electric two-wheelers could expand 27%, outpacing the wider two-wheeler segment's 8–10% growth. Crisil warned that these projections could soften if supply constraints worsen. How is India dealing with Bejing's blow? The Indian government and automakers are now working on a twin-pronged strategy, in the short term, building strategic inventories, tapping alternative suppliers and stepping up domestic assembly under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. In the long run, the focus is on reducing import dependency by accelerating rare earth exploration, creating local processing capabilities and investing in recycling. In the diplomatic arena, India has opened direct lines of communication with Beijing to stabilise supply flows. 'We are in touch with the Chinese side, both here in Delhi as also in Beijing to bring predictability in supply chain for trade, consistent with international practices' said ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a press briefing. Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, meanwhile, described China's export restrictions as a 'wake-up call' for the world. Speaking during his visit to Switzerland, Goyal said India was actively working to develop alternate supply chains and positioning itself as a credible partner for global businesses looking to reduce dependence on China. China's dominance in rare earth processing, controlling over 90% of the global magnet output, has left industries worldwide vulnerable. These magnets are not only vital for EVs but also used across sectors such as home appliances and renewable energy. Efforts are also being made to diversify sources. At the recent India-Central Asia Dialogue in New Delhi, India and five Central Asian nations (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) expressed interest in jointly exploring rare earths and critical minerals, potentially offering a longer-term buffer against global supply shocks.
