Hedera Africa Hackathon launches with $1m prize pool
The Hashgraph Association, a Swiss non-profit organisation driving global adoption of Hedera-powered solutions by funding innovation, training, certification and venture building programmes, in collaboration with Exponential Science Foundation, launched the Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025 to enable the next generation of Web developers and empower economic inclusion in Africa with a digital future for all.
This biggest Web3 Hackathon initiative combines online participation with onsite events in over 20 African cities, with a goal of attracting over 10,000 participants across more than 15 countries on the African continent. Developers, students and entrepreneurs are invited to collaborate to build decentralised solutions on Hedera across industries such as finance, healthcare, telecoms, sustainability, agriculture and manufacturing, while leveraging the convergence of other deep technologies such as AI, IoT, Robotics and Quantum Computing, with a prize pool of more than $1 million on offer for the winning teams and projects.
With global participation officially opens from August 1 to September 30, the hackathon tasks applicants to develop blockchain/distributed ledger technology (DLT)-based, scalable solutions tailored to the continent's most urgent challenges and needs. All solutions will be built on the Hedera network - the world's most energy-efficient and cost-effective DLT, which offers cost predictability, the highest levels of security, and the ability to support reliable, scalable and enterprise-grade applications.

Iran President hails HM's role in regional peace
MUSCAT: Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, expressed his deep gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for his role in supporting peace efforts in the region, and his valuable efforts in mediating between Iran and the United States, with the aim of achieving a satisfactory and just agreement that is respected by both sides and meets their aspirations. He added that the visit witnessed meetings between officials from both sides, and the signing of a number of agreements, memoranda of understanding and executive programmes in various fields, including health, energy, renewable energy, economics and trade. He emphasised the need to move forward with implementing what was agreed upon on the ground. The President said: "The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Sultanate of Oman are in advanced stages of consultation and coordination at the political and economic levels on many regional and international issues through joint meetings and gatherings. They share common and convergent positions on issues of concern to the region, foremost among the Palestinian issue. There is coordination to overcome some of the challenges resulting from the sanctions imposed on Tehran and resolve them through air and maritime cooperation, and to increase the volume of trade exchange between the two friendly countries to more than $20 billion." He pointed out that the Sultanate of Oman will be a hub for the exchange and export of goods and commodities between the two friendly countries, and through them to all countries in the region, to various countries in Central Asia, and from Oman to African countries, to achieve cooperation and partnership with all. Regarding reaching a fair agreement in the nuclear talks between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, the President noted that international laws are the just and equitable conditions, as any country can conduct scientific and specialised research related to uranium enrichment and benefit from the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. He emphasised that his country does not seek to possess nuclear weapons at all, but rather to benefit from enrichment in the fields of medicine, energy and economy. He called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in stopping the war of extermination and massacres committed by the Israeli occupation army against innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip, which has been under siege for nearly two years. - ONA

US court blocks most Trump tariffs
NEW YORK:A US trade court blocked most of President Donald Trump's tariffs in a sweeping ruling on Wednesday that found the president overstepped his authority by imposing across-the-board duties on imports from US trading partners. The Court of International Trade said the US Constitution gives Congress exclusive authority to regulate commerce with other countries that is not overridden by the president's emergency powers to safeguard the US economy. "The court does not pass upon the wisdom or likely effectiveness of the President's use of tariffs as leverage," a three-judge panel said. "That use is impermissible not because it is unwise or ineffective, but because [federal law] does not allow it." Financial markets cheered the ruling. The US dollar rallied following the court's order, surging against currencies such as the euro, yen and the Swiss franc. Wall Street futures rose and equities across Asia also jumped. The judges also ordered the Trump administration to issue new orders reflecting the permanent injunction within 10 days. The administration minutes later filed a notice of appeal and questioned the authority of the court. The court invalidated with immediate effect all of Trump's orders on tariffs since January that were rooted in the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a law meant to address "unusual and extraordinary" threats during a national emergency. The court was not asked to address some industry-specific tariffs Trump has issued on automobiles, steel and aluminum, using a different statute. Trump has made charging US importers tariffs on goods from foreign countries a central policy of his ongoing trade wars. A White House spokesperson said US trade deficits with other countries constituted "a national emergency that has decimated American communities." The ruling came in lawsuits filed by the Liberty Justice Center on behalf of five small US businesses and by 12 US states. Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield called Trump's tariffs unlawful, reckless and economically devastating. Trump has claimed broad authority to set tariffs under IEEPA.
