Israeli Finance Minister says he's lost faith in Netanyahu's Gaza war strategy

Saudi Gazette6 days ago
TEL AVIV — Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Saturday he has lost confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the war in the Gaza Strip, denouncing the government's newly approved 'gradual plan' to occupy the enclave.
Smotrich, a far-right minister who has long pushed for the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and Israeli settlement in the territory, said in a video on X that during Friday's Security Cabinet meeting he 'lost faith that the Prime Minister can and wants to lead the Israeli army to decisive victory.'
The plan, backed by Netanyahu and approved by the cabinet, calls for a phased occupation of Gaza and moving Palestinians from the north to the south. The proposal has faced opposition from Israeli security officials, who warn it could endanger the lives of hostages held by Hamas as well as Israeli soldiers.
'Netanyahu and the cabinet decided to carry out a military operation whose goal is not victory, but to pressure Hamas for a partial prisoner deal,' Smotrich said, urging the prime minister to reconvene the cabinet and commit to 'no stopping halfway, no partial deal — this time we go for a decisive, clear step toward victory.'
Smotrich has repeatedly opposed limiting Israel's campaign in Gaza to airstrikes, advocating instead for an all-out ground offensive and permanent settlement.
Israel's war on Gaza has killed more than 61,300 people since October 2023, according to health officials in the enclave, and has left the territory on the brink of famine.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military campaign. — Agencies

France urges Israel to drop West Bank settlement plan

France's foreign ministry Saturday called on Israel to drop a plan to build thousands of new homes in the West Bank, calling the project 'a serious violation of international law.' A ministry spokesman said that France 'condemns with the utmost firmness' the Israeli decision to build 3,400 homes in a particularly contentious area of the occupied West Bank. Several countries have said that project, called E1, undermines hopes for a contiguous future Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

Septuagenarian Indian activist marks Independence Day with fast for Gaza

New Delhi With a stack of fliers about Gaza in hand, Prof. Vipin Kumar Tripathi carefully hands each paper to the visitors of Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, in Old Delhi. For Tripathi, the independence hero's resting place was the perfect spot to mark India's Independence Day and simultaneously raise awareness about Gaza and the mass starvation Israel has imposed on the enclave's 2.1 million people. On Friday, the 77-year-old Indian activist went on a fast as a form of nonviolent protest and to express solidarity with Palestinians, hoping to spark similar compassion for Palestine among his countrymen. 'I want to raise conscience because it is an Independence Day of our country and independence is incomplete unless we awaken the feeling for independence of others, (especially) the most oppressed ones,' Tripathi told Arab News. 'I am creating consciousness and awareness on the major issues confronting the people of the world and extreme violence that is going on in Gaza: People are starving to death, they are being forced to starve.' A former physics professor at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, Tripathi came from a family of freedom fighters and has been an activist since 1989. After his retirement in 2013, he dedicated his life to social service, traveling to different parts of the country with a message of peace. His campaigns often involved engaging people in conversations and handing out information sheets and brochures addressing some of the most pressing issues in India, including the troubles in Kashmir and the ordinary citizens' rights to question their government. For the past month, his activism has been focused on Gaza. He has handed out Hindi and English leaflets titled 'Gaza Sufferings Must Awaken Us,' which draw similarities between the Indian and Palestinian struggle against British colonialism, while also urging Indians to speak up. Starting his day at 9 a.m., Tripathi distributed the same fliers on Friday around Old Delhi and at the Gandhi memorial, which he sees as a 'symbol of martyrdom for humanism.' He said: 'No human being is inferior or superior to each other. Every human being has a right to live with full dignity and freedom, and for this he sacrificed his life. 'I am sitting here today remembering the independence movement that India fought, to our martyrs, our freedom fighters and Indian masses who participated in their struggle, and I am also here fasting, remembering the (Palestinians) suffering extreme crisis of survival due to mass starvation and bombings continuously going on for the last 22 months.' While India's civil society and government opposition are increasingly speaking up against Israeli war crimes, New Delhi has largely remained quiet since Israel launched its assault on Gaza in October 2023. The campaign has killed more than 61,000 people and injured more than 154,000 others. Tripathi is also calling on the Indian government to 'change its position, change its stance on Gaza (and) on Israel.' By the end of the day on Friday, Tripathi was removed from the Raj Ghat by the police, who said that the site was not a location for protests. It was a scene similar to other pro-Palestinian demonstrations in New Delhi, where protesters have been detained. But Tripathi has said he will continue to campaign for Palestinians, as he merely wants the people of India 'to open their eyes.' He said: 'India's independence is not the independence of only the Indian people; the people who fought for India's independence also cared for the freedom of others. 'I want the people of this country to remove prejudices from their heads and feel the agony of the suffering masses of Gaza because they are not different from us. They are part of the same colonial struggle against colonialism that we carried … so I want the people of our country to be caring for them.'

Israelis Have No Intention of Giving Palestinians a State: Former US President Clinton

The former US President, Bill Clinton, said that Israel, under Benjamin Netanyahu, stands against the establishment of an independent Palestinian State – a position shared by the US President, Donald Trump. No Palestinian State During an interview with The Daily Show, Clinton seemed skeptic about Netanyahu and Trump's intentions regarding peace in the Middle East. 'They are not talking about negotiating peace in the Middle East because the Israelis have no intention of – under Prime Minister Netanyahu – of giving Palestinians a state. And now they are too divided and crushed to organize themselves to achieve that,' Clinton said. The former president suggested that Trump shared the same position, but both leaders wanted to avoid a full-scale conflict. 'President Trump apparently agrees with that, that they shouldn't have a state. But you don't want a disaster either,' he noted. Iran-Israel Conflict Clinton added that Netanyahu has used the conflict with Iran to consolidate his power. 'And Netanyahu has long wanted to fight Iran because that way he can stay in office forever and ever. He has been there for the most of the last 20 years,' the former US president said. He noted that Trump should try to 'defuse' the situation, stressing that the US have to ensure its Middle Eastern allies that it will protect them. 'We got to convince our friends in the Middle East that we will stand with them and try to protect them,' he said. 'But choosing undeclared war in which primary victims are civilians, who are not politically involved one way or the other, who just want to live decent life, is not a very good solution,' Clinton added. Iran Nuclear Weapon The former president noted that it is important to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, but without jeopardizing innocent lives. 'Do I think that we have to try to stop Iran from having a nuclear weapon? I do. I tried to do that and we had some success. But we don't have to have all this outright constant killing of civilians who can't defend themselves. They just want a chance to live,' Clinton said. Short link : Post Views: 22
