With Gaza's population of more than two million facing famine and malnutrition, Israel bowed to international pressure at the weekend and announced a daily "tactical pause" in fighting in some areas.advertisement"For the first time, I received about five kilos of flour, which I shared with my neighbour," said 37-year-old Jamil Safadi, who shelters with his wife, six children and a sick father in a tent near the Al-Quds hospital in Tel al-Hawa.
Safadi, who had been up before dawn for two weeks searching for food, said Monday was his first success. Other Gazans were less fortunate; some complained aid trucks had been stolen or that guards had fired at them near US-backed aid centres."I saw injured and dead people. People have no choice but to try daily to get flour. What entered from Egypt was very limited," said 33-year-old Amir al-Rash, still without food and living in a tent.Israel imposed a blockade on Gaza on March 2 after talks to extend a six-week ceasefire broke down. Nothing was allowed into the territory until late May, when a trickle of aid resumed. Now, the Israeli defence ministry's civil affairs agency says the UN and aid agencies were able to pick up 120 truckloads of aid on Sunday and distribute it inside Gaza, with more on the way Monday.BASIC SUPPLIESJordan and the United Arab Emirates have begun air-dropping aid packages by parachute over Gaza, while Egypt has sent trucks through its Rafah border crossing to an Israeli post just inside Gaza. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, cautiously welcomed Israel's "humanitarian pauses" but warned Gaza needed at least 500 to 600 trucks of basic food, medicine and hygiene supplies daily."We hope that UNRWA will finally be allowed to bring in thousands of trucks loaded with food, medicine and hygiene supplies. They are currently in Jordan and Egypt waiting for the green light," the agency said."Opening all the crossings and flooding Gaza with assistance is the only way to avert further deepening of starvation among the people of Gaza."Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly denied Israel was deliberately starving civilians as part of its intense 21-month-old war to crush the Palestinian group Hamas.Military spokesmen say the UN and aid agencies should quickly make use of the lull in fighting and secure aid routes, urging them to pick up and distribute aid delivered to Gaza border crossings.advertisement"An additional 180 trucks entered Gaza and are now awaiting collection and distribution, along with hundreds of others still queued for UN pickup," said COGAT, a defence ministry body that oversees Palestinian affairs."More consistent collection and distribution by UN agencies and international organisations equals more aid reaching those who need it most in Gaza."UNRWA insisted it was ready to step up distribution, with 10,000 staff inside Gaza, waiting for deliveries."According to our latest data, one in every five children is malnourished in Gaza City. More children have reportedly died of hunger, bringing the death toll of starving people to over 100," the statement said.Over the weekend, aid trucks began arriving from Egypt and Jordan and dropping their loads at distribution platforms just inside Gaza, ready to be picked up by agencies working inside the war-shattered territory. But their number still falls far short of what is needed, aid agencies warn, calling for a permanent ceasefire, the reopening of more border crossings and a long-term large-scale humanitarian operation.FIELD HOSPITAL C-SECTIONTruce talks between Israel and Hamas — mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the United States — have stumbled, and Netanyahu remains determined to push on with the campaign to destroy Hamas and recover Israeli hostages held in Gaza.advertisementGaza's civil defence agency said 16 people were killed by Israeli fire on Monday.Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal said they included five people killed in an overnight strike on a residential building in the southern Gaza district of Al-Mawasi.A pregnant woman was amongst the dead, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent, which said its teams saved the woman's foetus by performing a Caesarean section in a field hospital. The violence in Gaza came against the backdrop of a UN conference in New York where France and Saudi Arabia will lead a diplomatic effort to revive the moribund push for a two-state peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.- EndsTune InTrending Reel

Elderly Man Spotted Doing Yoga In Rain On Railway Platform, Internet Calls It "Aura Farming"
A video on Reddit has gone viral, showcasing an elderly man performing a headstand on a rainy railway platform. Despite the rain and onlookers trying to record him, the man seemed completely focused on his yoga practice. What's striking is that he was practising yoga without a mat or umbrella, completely focused on his pose. The person who recorded the video mentioned that the elderly man had been practising various yoga poses for a while, but they only managed to capture the headstand on camera. "Today, while waiting for the train saw an old man doing all kinds of yoga on the platform unaffected by rain and crowd, which was watching from another platform. Only able take shot of this one," the caption read. See the photo here: Waiting for the train and saw an old Man doing Yoga on the platform while it was raining. by u/PeepalGhost in indianrailways The video resonated with Reddit users, who praised the elderly man's calmness and focus amidst the hustle and bustle of a public railway platform. Many saw it as a quintessential example of everyday life in India, showcasing the man's dedication to his yoga practice. One person joked, "We all need such a coping mechanism before boarding a train in India." Another commented, "All I see is a person who forgot his umbrella and is keeping his head dry from the rain!" A third said, "The feeling would be out of this world, with more blood circulation going to his head." A fourth added, "Aura Farming." Notably, Yoga enjoys immense popularity in India, deeply rooted in the country's cultural, spiritual, and historical fabric. It's not just a physical exercise, but a way of life that integrates meditation, breath control, and ethical principles. Yoga is practised by millions across India, from urban to rural areas. A 2018 survey by the Ministry of AYUSH estimated that over 50% of Indian adults engage in some form of yoga or related practices, with higher participation in states like Uttarakhand, Kerala, and Maharashtra. The International Day of Yoga, declared by the UN in 2014 at India's initiative, sees massive participation, with events like mass yoga sessions in cities like New Delhi and Rishikesh drawing thousands annually.

Canada project reclaims 'foul' industrial area to contain floods
An aerial view of the Don River in the newly unveiled Biidaasige Park, part of Toronto's Port Lands Flood Protection Project, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (AFP photo) TORONTO: The spur to build Toronto's billion-dollar-plus flood prevention project dates back to a devastating hurricane in 1954, but planners say its urgency was reinforced by the recent tragic flooding in Texas. The Port Lands project has, in part, reversed a consequence of industrialization by reconnecting Lake Ontario with the Don River, more than a century after they were severed to create an industrial area. Chris Glaisek, chief planning officer at the municipal body Waterfront Toronto, said the idea was to "heal the land from the way it was repurposed 100 years ago," with a focus on "flood protection and naturalization." The complex project -- one of the largest in Toronto's history with a cost of Can$1.4 billion (US$1 billion) -- included digging a river valley and the creation of two new river outlets, with wetlands and marshes to absorb excess water during extreme storms. The mouth of the Don River was once the Great Lakes system's largest fresh water marsh, a rich habitat and vital food resource for Indigenous people before colonization. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo But Toronto, like many North American cities, saw industrial growth in the late 19th Century. Much of the marsh was drained and filled in to make room for a port industrial area, while the river was re-routed into a man-made channel. The Port Lands never thrived as an industrial area, leaving a vast stretch of eastern downtown under-used, and the Don River became polluted. "It was really dirty, it was foul, it was terrible," Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said recently. - Hurricane Hazel - On October 15, 1954 Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto, after hammering parts of the Caribbean and eastern United States. It killed 81 people across the Greater Toronto Area and served as catalyst for the city to get serious about flood protection. Hazel flooded the Humber River, in western Toronto, but Glaisek said "it was understood at the time that that same amount of rainfall, had it landed on the (eastern) Don, would have done a comparable amount of damage." He called Hazel an initial "impetus" to re-naturalize the Port Lands, but rising awareness over the past two decades about the causal link between climate change and extreme floods helped advance the project. - 'Duty bound' - To reclaim the Port Lands, Toronto partnered with the US-based landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, which has worked on the Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Laura Solano, the lead designer, said the project was "duty bound to address catastrophic flooding," but stressed it offered "much more." Because the area has been reformed to cope with flood waters, parts have been declared safe for new housing -- an urgent need in the expensive metropolis. There is also a new park, trails and people can canoe or kayak through the rehabilitated Don. Solano stressed Toronto's initial decision to alter the area was consistent with the times, when North American cities moved to "industrialize their raise their economic position." But now, "every city is looking to reclaim their waters," she told AFP. The Port Lands "shows the world that it's possible to fix the past and turn deficit and remnant industrial lands into living and breathing infrastructure." - 'The river is going to flood' - As Glaisek described the project, he stood on a bank that would, by design, be under water during a major storm. "It's all planned so that it can flood, the water level can rise, the river can get about three, maybe four times wider than it is now, absorb all of that volume of water," he said. "When the storm event subsides, it will shrink back down to this." It's a planning approach that recognizes "we're seeing more and more of these events." "Like in Texas, you see very tragic outcomes when you haven't really tried to plan for nature," he told AFP, referring to flash floods in early July that killed at least 135 people. He urged planners to "reposition" their relationship to nature and ditch the mindset that "humans (can) control everything." "Let's acknowledge the river is going to flood. Let's build the space for it." bs/des
