Netflix star Harper Steele, Will Ferrell's road trip buddy, named S.F. Pride Grand Marshal

Harper Steele, the Emmy-winning writer and star of the Netflix documentary ' Will & Harper,' has been named the 2025 Celebrity Grand Marshal for San Francisco Pride, organizers announced Friday, May 30.
Best known for her 13-year tenure at 'Saturday Night Live,' where she rose to head writer, Steele has emerged as a prominent voice in LGBTQ+ media.
Her recent turn in 'Will & Harper,' a road trip film with longtime friend Will Ferrell that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, has earned critical praise for its honest depiction of friendship and identity following Steele's gender transition.
'Harper's story is one of authenticity, imagination, and connection — all values that resonate most deeply with our community,' said Suzanne Ford, executive director of San Francisco Pride, in a statement. 'Her visibility and vulnerability are a powerful reminder that queer people can and must be celebrated in every context, including in media and entertainment.'
After leaving 'SNL,' Steele served as creative director at Funny or Die, where she co-wrote 'Casa de Mi Padre,' 'A Deadly Adoption' and 'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.'
The Netflix documentary ' Will & Harper' follows Ferrell and Steele, who have been pals since Will was added to the cast of 'SNL' in 1995 when Steele was one of the show's top writers, known by a different first name.
After Steele came out as a woman following the pandemic, the two embarked on a cross-country road trip to reconnect and reflect. The journey, and the film, were sparked by Ferrell's realization that he knew little about the experiences and challenges faced by the transgender community.
Steele also felt nervous about doing the trip as a trans woman driving through small towns and states where there were anti-transgender legislation was in effect.
The documentary received positive reviews, with the Chronicle's G. Allen Johnson noting that Ferrell and Steele 'start with a deep empathy and understanding, and everything else follows.'
This year's Pride celebration, scheduled to take place June 28–29, will carry the theme 'Queer Joy is Resistance.'
The event is scheduled to kick off with the SF LGBT Center's second annual "Building the Block: House Party" on Saturday, May 31.
San Francisco Pride's 2025 community grand marshals include activist Kenan Arun, director of operations at the LGBT Asylum Project; Jahnel Butler, associate director of Trans Services at the San Francisco Community Health Center and a prominent figure in the queer ballroom scene as the 'mother' of the House of Chanel; Jessy Ruiz, a community volunteer who immigrated from Michoacán, Mexico, to escape violence in her home state; and Dr. Tyler TerMeer, CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and co-chair of the AIDS United Public Policy Council.
The San Francisco Community Health Center was named Organizational Grand Marshal by community vote. Activist Tita Aida, also known as Nicky Calma, was honored as Lifetime Achievement Grand Marshal for her longtime advocacy around HIV/AIDS awareness in AAPI and transgender communities.

Netflix showed off new trailers for Knives Out 3 and del Toro's Frankenstein

At its now-annual Tudum event, Netflix revealed new trailers for some of its more anticipated feature films. That includes the very first teaser for Guillermo del Toro's live-action take on Frankenstein, which stars Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. It starts streaming in November, and is the latest project for del Toro on Netflix, following a stop motion Pinocchio and his anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities. Also at the show was Wake Up Dead Man, the third entry in the Knives Out murder-mystery series, and a follow-up to 2022's Glass Onion. Director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig return, and they're once again joined by an all-star cast. That includes Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church. Along with the very brief teaser trailer, Netflix confirmed when Wake Up Dead Man will be streaming: December 12th. Oh, and it you haven't seen enough of Squid Game 's third season, we also got one more trailer ahead of its premiere on June 27th, which will mark the end of the series.

‘Knives Out 3' Teaser: Daniel Craig's ‘Wake Up Dead Man' Sets December Release Date, Debuts Sinister First Footage

Netflix has unveiled the release date and a teaser trailer for 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.' The film marks the third iteration in the murder mystery franchise, which stars Daniel Craig in the role of celebrated Southern detective Benoit Blanc. The threequel will premiere Dec. 12 on Netflix. In the teaser, Daniel Craig says ominously 'The impossible crime,' as dramatic scenes of a church are shown. Written and directed by franchise creator Rian Johnson ('American Fiction,' 'Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi'), 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery' will star Kerry Washington and Josh Brolin alongside Craig. The cast also includes Cailee Spaeny, Josh O'Connor, Mila Kunis, Andrew Scott, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Thomas Haden Church, Daryl McCormack, Annie Hamilton, Kerry Frances and Marcus Edward Bond. Brolin and O'Connor will both play priests, with Kunis portraying a police chief known as G. Scott. Johnson, Brolin, Renner, Spaeny, Washington, McCormack and Kunis were on hand at Netflix's Tudum live event on Saturday to preview the film. Glenn Close appeared on video saying she was 'stuck in traffic.' Finally Craig appeared onstage as well, sporting blue-tinted shades. 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery' is produced by Johnson and producer Ram Bergman's production company T-Street. Netflix will handle distribution for the film as part of the streamer's two-sequel deal with Johnson. The threequel will likely up the ante even more, after the 'Glass Onion' was described by Variety's chief film critic Owen Gleiberman as a 'bigger, showier, even more elaborately multi-faceted shell-game mystery' than the original 'Knives Out,' writing 'Craig has figured out how to let his wry performance sneak up on you all over again, and the suspects hover in a tasty zone between toxic and sympathetic…It thoroughly delivers, but next time the knives should cut deeper.' Guillermo del Toro's ‘Frankenstein' Has Its Creepy First Trailer

The world's next hot monster is here. At its big Tudum event, Netflix released the first teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro's latest film, Frankenstein. In it, audiences finally catch a glimpse of Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster. A monster that is scary, but in a way that makes death seem okay. Thankfully, that's juxtaposed with the type of gore and scope one expects from Del Toro. The Oscar-winning director of The Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Hellboy and others has been wanting to make his version of the classic Mary Shelley story for years now, and with the help of Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth, he's done just that. Here's the first trailer for Frankenstein. Though Frankenstein was produced and will live on Netflix, we certainly hope audiences have a chance to see it on a big screen. Guillermo del Toro is one of those filmmakers whose work begs to be seen in a theater, and Frankenstein looks to fit the bill once again. It's all there in the trailer—incredible sets, beautiful visual effects, stunning costumes, gruesome makeup, you name it. We're also very curious about where Frankenstein is going to fit into the awards cycle at the end of this year. With a cast and crew like this, you'd imagine Netflix is expecting Frankenstein to be a contender for all the major awards. And, frankly, fans like you and I expect the movie to be good enough to do so. However, a project like this, one that seems so incredible on paper, often doesn't meet those expectations. How could it? This is the ultimate monster story from the ultimate monster filmmaker! After seeing this trailer, though, we think maybe this will live up to its potential Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz, comes to Netflix in November.
