STEVEN Gerrard remains the favourite amongst bookies to end up back in the Ibrox dugout.
But a former Premiership manager has thrown a new name in the hat for the Rangers job which he thinks draws similarities to appointing the Liverpool legend.

Though it would be his first role as a head coach he carries with him a big name and a wealth of experience at some of the world's very biggest clubs.
Carlo Ancelotti's son, Davide, has followed closely behind his father to land a number of massive roles but the near future is up in the air for the duo.
Davide has been assistant manager to his dad at Real Madrid since 2021, winning two La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues amongst other silverware.
Prior to this he was also number two to his old man at Everton, Napoli, and Bayern Munich, and was a fitness coach when the pair were at PSG.
But he could become available in his own right soon with Carlo set to depart Madrid at the end of this season and become boss of the Brazil national team.
Currently aged just 35, the young coach achieved his Uefa Pro Licence two years ago when he shared a course with ex-Dundee United gaffer Tam Courts.
The man who guided the Tannadice side to European football in 2022 before leaving to seek other options has a friend in Davide Ancelotti.
A short spell at Budapest Honved after the Tangerines led to him taking an extended break from management to attain his Pro Licence, and since then he's kept in touch with the Madrid man.
Now working behind the scenes at Saudi club Al-Qadsiah, Courts has talked up his pal from afar amid uncertainty around Barry Ferguson's post-interim future.
Speaking to Record Sport, he said: 'Davide absolutely has the mentality and the temperament to manage Rangers. Just by his personality.
David Friel explains why Sean Dyche has what it takes to be the next Rangers manager
"He's very humble but he has a lot of decisiveness too. He's a man of character and has a bit of steel about him.
"A lot of that comes from what he doesn't say, as opposed to what he does. Because he's a man who chooses his words very carefully.
'There's no doubt, even though he's worked at top clubs like Napoli, PSG, Bayern and Real Madrid - working in Glasgow, particularly because of the passion and size of Rangers, it's still a unique and challenging job.
'With talk of the takeover, it's a really interesting time to be considered to be Rangers' next head coach. But Davide speaks perfect English and multiple languages.
'And I totally understand why he's a guy Rangers would be considering, especially in terms of player attraction and retention.
'He's a big name. Players would want to come, not just to play for Rangers, but for him as well.

'And if top players at Ibrox are casting their eye elsewhere, I think they'd be interested in working with Davide if he was appointed.'
The two bonded during their course in Wales with the ex-Kelty boss saying the Italian showed an interest in the Scottish game.
He continued: 'You build a close relationship with these guys because you're going through the experience together. Davide, as you might imagine with the Ancelotti name, is very unassuming.
'But he has a lot of conviction and charisma. He has a lot of good human qualities. Above all else, he's a top person who was keen to learn from everyone. Davide always had a keen interest in the Scottish game.
'He'd worked with Duncan Ferguson at Everton so had a bit of an insight into Scottish football. He was always open and very interested in different leagues.
'It's amazing when you look at Davide's career so far. He's done a long apprenticeship. Initially, he had a junior position with his father.
'But it was when they went to Bayern Munich that he became the assistant manager. Davide also has a sports science degree so he does a lot of the analysis at Real Madrid, as well as the coaching.
'He's a guy who is very studious on the game, as you can imagine. And he's always been very clear that, at some point, he wants to be his own man.

'You have to understand the level of players he's worked with and what he's won - he's won major honours in his career. When you do that, you have a natural gravitas.'
Davide's playing career was far from show-stopping, but the name and former clubs alone carry worldwide renown in a way similar to how Premier League hero Gerrard did.
Courts said: 'It might be unfair to make the comparison, but when Steven became a manager for the first time at Rangers, it was a bit of an eye-opener.
'But it's quite similar to Davide and it's easy to draw parallels. Steven came from Under-18's football but had a big name. Davide's name speaks for itself.
'And what he has is more of a foundation and more experience of working on the training pitch with top players.
"Also, he'll have been spending the last year or two thinking about his staff and how he'd want to assemble it if he ever became a manager.'
With two league games left and a delayed takeover looming still, the Gers can soon hope to focus more on the next permanent appointment.

Jake Paul's opponent 'laughed out of the gym' by boxing rival ahead of fight

Boxing legend Shawn Porter has backed Jake Paul to beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr after he was left amused by what he saw from the Mexican in training. Paul is scheduled to make his boxing return on June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, against the former WBC middleweight champion. The 'Problem Child' has not fought since he cruised to a points victory over Mike Tyson back in November. Chavez Jr has been fairly inactive since losing the middleweight world title back in 2012. With a professional record of 54-6-1-1, the 39-year-old has fought the likes of Daniel Jacobs, Canelo Alvarez and Andy Lee. He comes into the cruiserweight dust-up off the back of a win against ex-UFC star Uriah Hall last July. While many are expecting a tough night at the office for Paul, Porter has confidently predicted that the 28-year-old will get the victory later this month. Speaking on The Porter Way Podcast, he said. 'I got Jake Paul by KO.' The boxing icon then explained how previously seeing Chavez Jr in the gym helped him come to that conclusion. 'He doesn't have a gas tank. That means you're not working and training out of the gym. I saw the in gym stuff and you scratch your head like 'that was it for the day?' He said. 'One day he came into the gym he shadow boxed, I don't know if he made it a round on the bag, then he packed up and left … I've seen some short stuff. I don't want to disrespect but it will make you scratch your head. The other fighters were laughing like 'that was it? Why did he show up?'' With just a few weeks to go until the clash, Paul is confident that he will "embarrass" Chavez Jr. "I'm gonna shock the world once again and prove how good I am, how powerful I am," the 28-year-old said at the launch press conference. "This is his toughest fight to date, and I'm going to embarrass him and make him quit like he always does." He added: "I don't want any excuses, and when I beat this man all the boxing media, like you guys always do, are going to discredit it. But I'm gonna expose him and I'm gonna embarrass him. He's the embarrassment of Mexico. Mexico doesn't claim him. "He's going to get exposed on June 28, and then the boxing media will have all these excuses but I don't want them to be having these excuses. They say he's training hard, they say this is the most focused he's ever been, good. As he should be, because people don't realise how good I actually am, and when he feels those first few punches he's going to want to quit and go back to his stool."

Iwata in key Rodgers admission as reason for Celtic exit revealed

The midfielder completed a deadline day switch to the English third-tier outfit. Iwata has thrived in his first year south of the border, scoring eight goals and finding himself nominated for League One's Player of the Season award. Read more: He recently lifted the lid on his Celtic exit, admitting that he had no knowledge of Brendan Rodgers when he rejoined the club. "Manager Rodgers was a famous coach in Scotland, but I didn't know of him at all," Iwata told Soccer Digest Web. "At first, I wondered, 'What kind of person is he?' The team actually got going, and the football they were trying to play was interesting. "But there were some areas where I wasn't able to fully showcase myself. It was partly because there was an absolute player in Callum McGregor in the same position, but honestly, I feel like I could have done more. "For players in the front line, the numbers are clear, but my strengths are my one-on-one strengths and my ability to steal the ball. "At Celtic, it's difficult to show that. The teams that are overwhelmingly strong in Scotland always have the ball and take the lead. "I would take it positively that I was able to concentrate on the offensive side, but I can't show my strengths much and I don't get much playing time. "The level of the Scottish first division is a little lower than the top five European leagues, so I often felt that it was a difficult environment for me." The 28-year-old's lack of minutes, along with his family life, was a key factor in his exit: "I wasn't impatient, but more than that, I couldn't help but feel the regret that I, a soccer player, wasn't playing in the games," he said. "At that time, I had a very strong desire to play soccer. Seeing my wife taking care of our children in a foreign country where I was not familiar with them, cooking meals and doing housework, I couldn't help but feel the emotion. "Birmingham made me an offer as soon as the off-season began, and they patiently waited until August 31st, the final day for transfers. "I thought to myself, 'If they feel that way about me, I want to go,' and immediately packed my bags and headed for my new home. I didn't have any negative feelings about it being in the third division, and my biggest motivation at the time was wanting to show my family that I was working hard. "In addition, the manager, Chris Davies, had previously been a coach at Celtic and had recently been a coach under Ange at Tottenham. "The two managers had heard about me and offered me the position with confidence that we could work together, so I was able to go with peace of mind." Birmingham won League One last term, and Iwata will play his football in the Championship in the forthcoming 2025/26 season.

Rangers ‘take next step in Conor Coady pursuit' as Russell Martin makes 10-cap England star a top priority

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS have reportedly made their first move to sign Conor Coady from Leicester City this summer. The 10-cap England star is believed to be one of Russell Martin's top transfer targets as he aims to complete some quick-fire deals after taking over as Rangers boss. Sporting director Kevin Thelwell hinted at Martin's first press conference that the club will be looking for experienced players to join their squad - and Coady ticks those boxes. And the Daily Record now claim the Light Blues have opened talks with the Foxes over his availability. Coady is a versatile player who can operate in midfield or as a ball-playing centre-back. Martin's philosophy is all about playing out from the back so he could slot into the manager's system very well. Coady still has a year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium but will have to take a cut after their relegation to the second tier. The Foxes will want to cut their wage bill but Coady's future at the club is currently unclear. It's particularly complicated by the fact there are still question marks over Ruud van Nistelrooy's future as well. Meanwhile, Rangers are also chasing Israel forward Dor Turgeman. Turgeman is currently away with Israel on international duty but Thelwell are keen to do quick business for the attacker. The Rangers manager is also a long-term fan of his former Swansea defender Harry Darling. The centre half is set to become a free agent and but the Light Blues will face a fight to land him.
